Washington, D.C.
— The release of the President's budget proposal today begins an annual spending process in which Congress will spend enough money to buy every family in the United States a new car.

The Budget of the United States Government sets forth the President's comprehensive financial plan for allocating resources and indicates the President's priorities for the Federal Government. A White House overview says this budget holds overall discretionary spending below the rate of inflation and cuts spending in non-security discretionary programs below 2006 levels. It proposes to terminate or significantly reduce in size 141 programs.

According to WashingtonWatch.com calculations, the budget proposal represents spending of more than $28,000 per U.S. family, enough to buy each family a new Buick Lucerne CX.

The release of the President's budget begins a process for allocating government spending in Fiscal Year 2007, which begins on October 1, 2006. After the House and Senate consider Budget Resolutions, the Appropriations Committees in each house will consider the spending bills that actually permit the disbursement of funds.
