One of the things that is not talked about is the opportunity cost of one treatment modality vs another.

Acupuncture is virtually without side effects and has a low cost. With recent studies coming out about the harmful side effects of common over the counter drugs one has to wonder how many serious long term problems could be avoided with further implementation of acupuncture into our health system. Statistically, pain medications are as a group are around %20 effective for chronic pain much lower than acupuncture. Think about the cost of a liver transplant resulting from years of damage from pain meds. A liver transplant has an estimated first-Year cost of $314,600.

Annual Follow-up cost average $21,900. How about the 650000 back surgeries (%50 effective) done every year at an average total cost of $90,000. That pays for a lot of acupuncture.
