Heinegg and Demarce worked together and their research was shoddy and heresay. The BIA has it's own experts (Swanton, McMillan, Pierce, etc.) that have travelled down to Lumbee territory over one dozen times concluding that we are a native people. We used over 12 herbs no other tribe had no use for (over 100 in all-look up Vernon Cooper and Cheraw Chief Robert LOCKLEAR). We aren't some fly by night noveau native tribe. We have petitioned for our rights as Native people for over 128 years. Not to mention, we are charter members, along with EBCI, in the National Congress of American Indians (many Lumbee have sat on the board of directors), held the chairpersonship in NIEA (National Indian Education Association). We even have a former MISS INDIAN WORLD. So my question is, if other Native people accept us as native, if we were recognized by congress as native, and if anthropologist/government agencies recognize us as Native who are you peons/ignorant individuals to say were not?
