Anyone who is serious about balancing the budget must look at the Veterans Administration. This year the VA is paying out a huge amount of money to a small group of veterans. A large number of these payments are reaching and exceeding half a million ($500,000) dollars per person. All of this is the result of a bad decision made last year by Secretary Shinseki to include certain heart problems in the Agent Orange presumptive disease list.
It is important to remember that the people receiving these benefits are mostly male and in their 60's. Heart disease is rampant among this group in the general population, due mostly to lifestyle. And yet Shinseki decided they should be covered under the presumptives.
This kind of action by irresponsible politicians like Shinseki is causing the budget to grow out of control every day.
Congress should repeal the Agent Orange Act and stop throwing money down the drain for these kinds of things.
