1980,
President Jimmy Carter was left looking like a bumbling fool and vulnerable to Bush's October Surprise which won the November 1980 election. Less than a month before the election, when it appeared Carter may negotiate a release the hostages, as unimaginable (un-American) as it was, VP candidate George H. Bush met and sealed a deal with religious rulers of Iran. He promised missiles and munitions forbidden under U.S. law to the militant Muslim State through Israel if the Ayatollah would refuse any hostage agreement until Reagan won the election. One day after Reagan's inauguration on 20 January 1981, Iran returned those Americans held in captivity.
