Lower the Beer Tax!
Posted by Jim Harper
Oh happy day! Oh joy! A favorite bill around the WashingtonWatch.com international headquarters has been reintroduced!
S. 1058 would lower the tax on beer to its pre-1991 level.
Now, I don’t know what its pre-1991 level was, but evidently it’s lower – meaning: our small, cautiously used beer fund could go just a little bit further.
It was [...]

“There’s a lot going on in Washington that we’re not very comfortable with.”
Posted by Jim Harper
That was Cokie Roberts on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos as the Sunday morning panel sought to figure out what the April 15 tea parties were all about.
Was it about taxes? Well, taxes haven’t gone up. In fact, they’ve gone down – but they might have to go up given the [...]

Unkindness in the Comments
Posted by Jim Harper
Ah, the comments. Source of so much joy and anguish here on WashingtonWatch.com.
Here a story of comments that provide a stark contrast in debating styles: S. 243, the GIVE Act of 2009, would amend the tax code to allow a deduction for the use an automobile for charitable purposes.
A commenter named Sharon [...]

The AIG Bonus Debacle: Channel Your Anger
Posted by Jim Harper
In early February here on this blog, I wrote favorably about the somewhat fanciful idea of televising the conference committee on the economic stimulus bill.
If conference committee meetings were televised, members of the conference committee would be constrained to explain what they were doing and why. That would be a good thing.
Well, the conference [...]

No Bailout, Huh? . . . Would You Settle for “No Bonus”?
Posted by Jim Harper
Everyone’s abuzz about the bonuses being paid out to AIG employees, some reaching above $1 million.
And Congress is there on the case, chasing down the money that . . . it is responsible for putting out there in the first place.
(Yes, yes, AIG money was a loan from the Fed, not TARP – [...]

Posted by Jim Harper
We’ve pointed out new constitutional amendments a couple of times here. Well, a bunch of new ones are on Congress’ docket.
Just for you, we’ve organized them into two piles. From the consistent-with-our-scheme-of-negative-rights pile, there’s:
H. J. Res. 28, Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States regarding the right to vote
H. J. [...]

The Deadline for Corporate Tax Returns is March 16
Posted by Jim Harper
. . . and Congress is thinking of raising the penalty for late filing.
H.R. 1241 would increase the penalty for failure to file a tax returns for a partnership or S corporation.
But it wouldn’t raise the fine by much. Maybe you can skip it again this year and hope you won’t get caught.
Here’s the [...]

Let’s Amend the Constitution – Some More!
Posted by Jim Harper
Yesterday, we took a look at some proposed amendments to the Constitution. They generally had to do with government management-type issues: voting, congressional and presidential terms, etc. These things are all important, to be sure.
But another set of amendment proposals are the hot buttons. Let’s take a look at them.
Flag burning is, [...]

DirecTV vs. Cable on Taxes
Posted by Jim Harper
I was flipping through the channels on a DirecTV setup yesterday when I spied a most interesting campaign put together by the satellite TV provider itself. On the unused channels, there was an important message aimed at subscribers.
Big Cable companies are encouraging states across the country to charge satellite subscribers, like you, higher state [...]
