On the Blog: Fixing the VA

In the wake of news about long delays for treatment at some Veterans Affairs Department facilities, General Eric Shinseki has resigned. But will things change?

We detail forthcoming legislation aimed at improving things in post entitled: “Fixing the Veterans Administration.”

Featured Items

Legislation to reform the Veterans Administration, which the Senate may debate this week, has not yet been introduced.

The House does not meet this week, but last week it passed two spending bills. One was H.R. 4660, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2015.

The bill would spend money on the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, and related agencies, such as the Commission on Civil Rights, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Legal Services Corporation, the Marine Mammal Commission, the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Office of the United States Trade Representative, and the State Justice Institute.

Passage of H.R. 4660 would cost about $585 per U.S. family.

The House also passed H.R. 4745, the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2015.

The bill would spend money on the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation, and related agencies, such as the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, the Federal Housing Finance Agency‘s Office of Inspector General, the Federal Maritime Commission, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

Passage of H.R. 4745 would cost about $1,120 per U.S. family.
