On the Blog: Shutdown and Debt Ceiling

The government shutdown that began when the House and Senate couldn’t agree on federal spending for fiscal year 2014 continues. But a new dimension on the action has emerged: the debt limit.

Read about it in a post entitled “From Shutdown to Debt Limit.”

Featured Item

At mid-week, Congress’s schedule is still uncertain. Late Tuesday, the House cancelled a Wednesday vote on its latest plan to end the government shutdown and lift the debt ceiling.

Last week, the Senate declined to proceed with a debt limit bill. S. 1569, the Default Prevention Act of 2013, would suspend the debt ceiling until until January 31, 2014. Senate Republicans disagree with lifting the debt ceiling until beyond the next election, so they declined to vote to proceed with debate on the bill.

Changes to the debt ceiling have no direct cost, so there is no cost estimate for S. 1569.
