On the Blog: FAA De-Sequestration – Can it Really Become Law?

The sequestration debate took a strange turn last week. The House and Senate each passed bills to protect the Federal Aviation Administration from across-the-board cuts that threatened to delay air travel. But did they successfully pass a bill that can be signed into law?

We put forward our opinion in a post entitled: “Hey, Congress! Think You Passed a Law? We Don’t.

The House and Senate do not meet this week, returning to business in Washington, D.C. during the first full week in May.

Last week, both the House and Senate passed bills aimed at alleviating the effect’s of across-the-board “sequestration” spending cuts on the Federal Aviation Administration.

Both S. 853 and H.R. 1765 are known as the “Reducing Flight Delays Act of 2013.”

The two bills would allow the Department of Transportation to more fully fund the FAA from existing funds. Though no official cost estimate yet exists, the costs of S. 853 and H.R. 1765 are likely quite low.

As we pointed out in a blog post, the two bills are not identical, which could preclude their becoming law without further action by Congress.
