On the Blog: The GSA Scandal

Congress is trying to figure out what to do about the scandal created by a General Services Administration conference in Las Vegas costing over $800,000.

We assess a couple of relevant bills in a post entitled: “The GSA Scandal: How to Fix It, How Not to Fix It.” One of the bills is H.R. 2146, the DATA Act, which the House will debate this week.

Featured Items

This week, the House will debate H.R. 2146, the DATA Act. (“DATA” stands for “Digital Accountability and Transparency.”) The bill would establish a new executive branch board to track spending on grants, contracts, and loans. It would also publish spending data that agencies would be required to produce according to standards set by the board.

Passage of H.R. 2146 would cost the average U.S. family about $5.50.

The House will also debate a package of “cybersecurity” bills: H.R. 2096, H.R. 3834, H.R. 4257, and H.R. 3523, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act.

Among other things, the last one, “CISPA,” would (controversially) require the Director of National Intelligence to establish procedures to promote information sharing about “cyberthreats” between intelligence agencies and the private sector.

Passage of H.R. 3523 would cost the average U.S. family about $0.14.
