On the Blog: No Government Shutdown This Week

Late last week, House Republicans and Senate Democrats agreed on a short-term spending bill that avoids a government shutdown, which many were anticipating for this coming Friday. But that only moves the impasse back a few weeks.

Featured Items

Congress will likely pass a bill to extend funding of the government this week. That bill has not been introduced yet.

The House will also debate H.R. 662, the Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2011. The bill would extend surface transportation programs through September 30, 2011 and set authority to incur obligations at $52.7 billion for 2011. This would result in contract authority for these programs totaling $580 billion over the 2011-2021 period.

Passage of H.R. 662 would cost the average U.S. family about $5,000.

The House will also debate H.R. 4, the Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act of 2011. The bill would repeal IRS reporting requirements scheduled to take effect in 2012, including reporting on payments made to corporations and those made for property.

Passage of H.R. 4 would save the average U.S. family a little over $160.
