On the Blog: Terrorism Works, Distracts Country from Budget

The goal of the recent Times Square bombing attempt was not killing or scaring tourists in New York City—though that helps. The goal is undermining our society and economy. And it’s working. The country is taking its eye off the ball and letting Congress spend money without a budget. Read about it in a blog post entitled: The Times Square Bombing and the Budget: Terrorists Are Winning.

This week, the Senate will continue debating S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010.

Among other things, the bill would establish an “Orderly Liquidation Fund” to manage the failure of financial institutions. It would expand the authority of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. And it would create a new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, among other changes to financial services regulation.

A new estimate has lowered the cost of S. 3217‘s passage from about $1,000 per U.S. family to about $970.

The House will debate H.R. 5116, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010. The bill would spend money to support scientific research, industrial innovation, and educational activities at a number of different federal agencies.

Passage of H.R. 5116 would cost a little over $550 per U.S. family.
