The Bill for the Health Care Bill: $7,800
Health care reform legislation will be debated in the House this coming week, and the issue is all teed up.
H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, was introduced last week—all 1,990 pages of it.
You can see it by clicking “Read the bill” in the “Learn more” box on the bill’s page.
The Los Angeles Times has a good story answering questions about what the bill is meant to do.
The bill also has a score from the Congressional Budget Office. What it boils down to is this: a cost of over $7,800 per U.S. family. (Read about our methodology here.)
Here’s some summary language from CBO:
The estimate includes a projected net cost of $894 billion over 10 years for the proposed expansions in insurance coverage. That net cost itself reflects a gross total of $1,055 billion in subsidies provided through the exchanges (and related spending), increased net outlays for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and tax credits for small employers; those costs are partly offset by $167 billion in collections of penalties paid by individuals and employers. On balance, other effects on revenues and outlays associated with the coverage provisions add $6 billion to their total cost.
Over the 2010–2019 period, the net cost of the coverage expansions would be more than offset by the combination of other spending changes, which CBO estimates would save $426 billion, and receipts resulting from the income tax surcharge on high-income individuals and other provisions, which JCT and CBO estimate would increase federal revenues by $572 billion over that period.
Read the whole estimate (only 27 pages) by clicking “Read an analysis of the bill” in the “Learn more” box on the bill’s page.
For or against? That’s the important question.

Oookaaayyyy…
That was interesting. I don’t think the health care debate has anything to do with race.
Furthermore, the statements made by Tyrone were divisive. Please try to contain your personal bias against any other skin color to yourself. Intelligent debate cannot proceed using inflammatory language.

Forced Health Insurance Costs Will Damage Housing Market/Threaten Bank Mortgage Values:
Obama Forced Health Insurance with or without a Public Option is unaffordable for many Americans. Has Sen. Harry Reid considered the economic damage Forced Health Insurance Costs and Penalties will cause Americans? Millions of families that cannot afford to pay both forced health insurance and their home mortgage or rent, will have to pay Opt-Out penalties with money they might need for medical expenses. Citizens caught in this Catch 22 which there may be millions, will not be considered poor for federal assistance to buy health insurance. Middle class home buyers stabilize the housing market, but many will have to Opt-Out buying health insurance to eliminate that debt, to qualify for mortgages. The Obama government pumped up the housing market with billions of Tax Dollars and home buyer incentives. But forcing expensive health insurance and preceding taxes on Americans will disqualify home buyers needed to support home selling prices/property values that secure trillions in bank mortgages.
Historically fewer home buyers has lowered home selling prices and caused a reduction in property taxes—forcing local governments to layoff workers and ask federal agencies for money; increasing federal deficits. Stagnate or declining home sales generally cause increasing unemployment in construction, manufacturing, financial institutions and other industries dependent on a stable housing market.

the American people said they wanted universal health care for
all Americans. President Obama is
doing what the People wanted. He was elected to do the job his way
and get it done. He aught to tell
Congress and the House that they will have the same insurance that the American people get, nothing more or less. That is what he promissed. He also should make all
Senators and Representatives opt in
on Social security. That would save us Billions, and insure that
the Social Security system stays
healthy. I wonder if it was now the law, as it should be, would the people on SS get their cost of living increase??
ROBERT KAPLAN
President Obama was elected to change the system and give all
Americans health care coverage.
With a Democratic majority in the
House and Senate, it shoul be a no
brainer. A Public Option is needede to force insurance prices lower. Some companies have Monoplys in some states. I thought this was illeagle? Mr Obama said the people should have the same policy as their elected officials.
I agree, but the only way this would be feasable is too make them
get the public option also. This would save Billions over the years.
These elected officials and Federal and State employees opted out of Social Security. Since we make the law, and they are supposed to work for us, they shoul have equil (the same) benefits we have, since we pay for it. Lakes make them opt back into Social Security to save more Billions and protect the system.
They should not receive benefits that are not available to the public. We said we wanted term limits. Never happened. Ourfault.
We elected George HWBush and he ran
on the promise to give America a viable school system again. He was Govoner of Texas, that had the wost school system in the country, and we elected him. Ourfault. The credit card laws that make it legal for banks to raise our jnterest even tho we never miss a payment, because it’s the law. Which Legislator wrote and sponcered this law? He had to get
paid by the banks, we should know who they are so we can vote them out.If we dont watch then it’s our faul we get screwed. WAKE UP. If we spent the time it takes to watch one football game or two soap opreas, watching what our govrrnment, both State and Federal did, we would be better off.
