Yet Another Opportunity for Foul-Mouthed Rants!
Another bill to extend unemployment benefits was introduced yesterday. The text of the bill isn’t available yet, so I can’t tell you how long it would extend them for. The bill is H.R. 3756.
What’s this about foul-mouthed rants?
The top four most visited bills on the site so far this week deal with unemployment benefits, a topic that generates a lot of passion. (Check out H.R. 3548, S. 1699, H.R. 3404, S. 1647) )
On the one hand, many Americans are distraught at being unemployed. Some of their stories are touching, men and women who want desperately to provide for their families.
Then there are the folks who it’s hard to feel sympathy for. These are the ones who can’t post a comment without dropping the f-bomb or the s-bomb.
The frustrated people on these pages are particularly easy targets for trolls. All a troll has to do is drop a rude comment and the board explodes with curses and ranting. Not good. It’s understandable that they fall for this trick, but it’s hard, frankly, to feel sympathy for people whose highest expression is to come up with new ways to tell someone else to “F%$#@^& you F$%&*ing f$^&*!”
Plenty of people, of course, are sharing the latest news and organizing their efforts. Great to see that.
Anyway, off we go! Another place to rant, tell your story, organize, or debate: H.R. 3756.

I guess people have reached their limit with waiting on the “do nothing” Senate. Kind of hard to be civil when you are losing everything, as some of these people are due to a jobless economy and lacl of jobless benefits.
flyfishva
The word above was supposed to be lack of jobless benefits.

You must be employed as you lack empathy towards the unemployed’s plight!

Too bad comments left are censored…and not posted. If you post trash expect comments!

With all due respect, please hold on a minute, Mr. Harper. While I agree that trash talking on an Internet site gives the impression that people either have lower standards or have “lowered” their standards, it is a mild display of “frustration,” quite frankly.
I am in Michigan…the epic center of this train wreck. My unemployment benefits ran out in August. Over the past two years, I’ve moved 8 times while looking for work. When I first lost my job as an Admissions Director at a skilled nursing home, I thought I would be employed within the week…then month…then several months. I came up with ideas for starting businesses, but the pressing need to have an income put those “opportunities” on the back burner. I am like so many other on these site. I AM a good employee…at 52 years old I know what it means to have a good work ethic, integrity and character. I have never taken advantage of anyone. I’ve had a variety of jobs in many types of industry and thought that would lead to job opportunities. They didn’t because everyone has turned to the Internet to reap in the thousands of applications that are submitted for a job. What HR department can possibly “screen” that volume of response?
I’ve lost my home, my job, my car, went through a divorce (which is being reconciled because we realize that it wasn’t “us” but extreme circumstances) and have sold almost anything of value that I’ve owned to survive. I am grateful because I believe my survival is not reliant on the government or other people, but God. However, we ALL survive because each of us is used as a tool to be Christ-like to one another and help others survive and thrive.
Frustration is borne from an extreme lack of urgency and empathy by others that do not feel the direct results from traumatic loss. It’s devastating and people have held on to hope waiting for a lifeline from their representatives. They just don’t know how much longer they can hold on. Simple!
Again, I don’t condone foul talk whether in person or on the Internet…but I empathize with the pain that causes the “frustration.” I’m there. I know and I’m waiting.

Please excuse my grammatical errors. I was interupted by a financial situation, while typing.

I tried to write in a balanced way and specifically noted the touching examples of hard-working people who can’t find good employment right now. If I missed the mark and you feel like I failed to acknowledge the seriousness of many people’s plights, I’m sorry.

Thank you. I appreciate your attempt at balancing your comments. What is frustrating to me is that I feel like so many people have been played like fools. Granted, we all have individual responsibility to research information on our mortgages, credit card applications and major banks/companies agendas and balance sheets…but many of us were working trying to support our families, encouraging our kids to do well in school and living the American dream as we sent them off to college. We either didn’t see this coming or ignored the warning signs. Either way, the affect of being run over is the same.
It’s not just the factory worker that is going through tough times (although they were branded throughout the country as being over-paid for working 7days/12 hours a day and sacrificing life with their families and, now, are unsympathetically being cast as workers that somehow deserve their lot), but college educated workers that thought they had covered all the bases and lived in nicely groomed suburbs are now going through every penny they have before they become homeless. Most of the time these citizens are trying to be “normal” and make their payments on every bill they have until they finally realize that they, in reality, can’t anymore. They could be like many of the executives of the companies that went under and stash every dollar they could and quit paying their bills long before they hit bottom. Believe me, so many people are still in shock that they are in this position! The American Dream is crumbling and being resurrected in China and India.
I voted for Obama because I believed he would try to put the common man’s needs on the same level as any executive’s. I didn’t think when he spoke about volunteering it would be because the average citizen couldn’t afford to pay for services they need to survive. I didn’t think when he encouraged everyone to attend college it would be because there is no way to support yourself because the pay scale would crash and $8.00 jobs would be all that is available.
Dignity and purpose is what any of us want. Not pity and not being treated like we are all uneducated, pathetic morons. I keep looking for direction, and it’s hard to find. Even career advisors at our colleges say that they “wish they had a crystal ball” when you ask them what program is in high demand. From what I hear, 70% of our graduates are leaving the state. We elected our State officials and it seems that THESE educated public servants REALLY missed the ball. Hmm, not only have they stood by and watched the crash but have contributed to many of our economic woes. We are finding out how much corruption has been going on behind the scenes in our major cities. It is disgusting (even though they do the politically correct thing and not swear in public – they just stab everyone of us in the back)!
My state is beautiful. We have lakes within a few miles of each other. Rolling hills, cities and countryside to drive through and enjoy. Lovely changes of seasons. Our families work hard and are decent people with strong family values. Now our families are being torn apart…some holding on here that can’t afford to leave and others leaving praying for economic stability somewhere else. Yes, here it is…the depression.
I am not a big fighter, but I could fight someone over this…if I only knew who! Not only do I hurt, but my family has been hurt and not too many officials seem to be all that concerned. When the southern states were snearing at the car companies and their plight, they showed no mercy for the devastation that would follow when our manufacturing base crumbled. It wasn’t about what car was politically correct to build, it was about the banks that wouldn’t supply money for customers to BUY a car. It’s easy to watch company’s fold when you cut off the money supply to buy their product. How things get twisted around!
I am sorry for going on and on. I hope that all of our educated representatives will be guided to pass this bill not based on their superior position in our government, but because we, the people, are in trouble and need our government to care. Whether it’s an extension or a promise to build us back to a place where we can regain a means to support ourselves and our families, humbly we ask for assistance of some kind.
I don’t know that anyone can understand what it’s like until it has happened to them. But after it has, we need someone to listen and care. It’s cold in Michigan and I pray that God protects those that are homeless and in need. We all need to care.
Mia
Dear “sleepless” – I never heard anyone in the “Southern” states “sneering” at the plight of car companies in Michigan…and I live in TN. Most Southerners wouldn’t do that. Although it’s not as bad here as it is there, still the “help wanted” page of the newspaper is down to one side of two pages.
I hope you find work soon.

I was referring to the representatives that put the executives from the car companies through hell…and yes, I would call it snearing. Asking them what mode of transportation they used to arrive at Washington, while all of them travel in the exact same style.
I am not referring to the people from the southern states. It just makes me upset when the foreign car companies are located in the southern states and those particular representatives found no problem telling us that American car companies would not be missed if they went under.
Again, this is frustration at ALL the powers that be that contributed in any way towards this mess…and the problem is, we won’t know for years who was the chicken and who was the egg.
