Federal Prison Work Incentive Act – Hail Fellow Well Met!

An enthusiastic welcome to everyone visiting H.R. 1475, the Federal Prison Work Incentive Act of 2009 this week.

By your numbers, you have toppled the equine cruelty issue from the top of the “active bills” list. Bills float to the top of this list based on the number of visits, and the horse people have kept their bills at the top for weeks now as they debate back and forth and back and forth. (And did I mention “back and forth”? 4,000+ comments at this point.)

Let’s hope you have better success with your debate than they have. Their thousands of comments have produced an incredible amount of useful arguments on both sides of their issues, but there have been only four wiki edits and the information they have remains obscure.

The audience that matters – new visitors to the site – will not review hundreds and hundreds of comments to learn about issues. They will review the wiki article for a bill. Advocates on both sides should put their arguments in the wiki articles if they want their side to be heard. (Here’s how to edit the wiki.)

To edit the article about the Federal Prison Work Incentive Act, click here and (once logged in) flesh out the wiki article with solid information about the issue, the bill, and why it should or should not pass.

With your bill at the top of the heap, you’re in a unique position to educate new visitors about it. But you can’t do that (very well) if you don’t edit the wiki!

Please pass the bill. The charges are extremely severe; I feel everyone should be given a second chance. These individuals shouldn’t have to spend 20 years away from the families. I have seen cases when individual with murder charges received less time

v gabriel

I strongly agree that the 1475 bill should be passed. I also, agree that there are consequences for their crimes , but some of these crimes are not justified according to the time that these prisoners are given. They are just locking them up and throwing away the key and that is not the solution to the problem.

bridget

i am for the 1475 i think it is a good

Brenda

I too strongly agree that Bill #1475 should be passed.

Lempi Chavez

I think that the inmates that work hard should have a chance for a new begining, with some exceptions

Emily M.

I suppport this Bill and I have sent letters to every Representative that sits on the House Committee on the Judiciary.

Patty Griffith

Long prison sentenses for non-violent crimes only insure that a victim stays a victim. Punishment should include repayment to the victim and our judicial system. Halfway houses are the solution. They are required to work (like the rest of us) and pay for their own living expenses and forced to pay the restitution.

First time nonviolent offenders don’t have anything to work for like parole or getting out early. This bill not only helps them, but the people who need them home and love them. PLEASE pass this bill. Thank you.

David Clark

I agree in the pasing of HR 1475, to give offenders a second chance to be productive members of society. This second chance, to first time offenders of white collar crimes, is the most humane way to address someone who has made a wrong decision. I firmly believe that time in FCI will adequately provide a deterrant for future white collar offenses.

This Bill should have been put in place a long time ago. There are many, many families who are waiting for the loved ones to come home. First time, non-violent offenders deserve another chance!!! What kind of country do we live in that thinks the Mandatory Minimum Sentencing Guidelines are a good thing! Until you have seen the punishment that is given first-hand, you can not believe that it happens each and every day in this country. Families are torn apart each and every day. Taxpayer dollars are wasted and families are forced to go without things that they would have if they had two working parents. You would think the U.S. would be embarrassed to report how many people they have in Federal Prisons!!!!! Pass the 1475 and do everyone a favor!!!

Pass a bill to help inmats to get more time off this needs to pass my brother is in prison this has hurt our family and this is killing my mom. he’s 28 yrs old and the best yrs of his life will be in prison 16 yrs.small time drugs ( yes pay for your wrong ) but 16 yrs.over 200,000 people in fed prison what are we doing to our own people ? something must be done. taking lifes as it’s nothing
how can this be real, what can a person do 47 yrs old how can a new life be started. This has got to be looked at HELP OUR PEOPLE IN THE USA

hope

NOt only should people be given second chance, but there are even some INNOCENT people serving Federal time because system failed them. A corrupt city administration can put people away and get by with it.

mom

Pass this bill way over due for a change. to much tax money spent on
a failed system. to many lifes hurt
with so much prison time. SAVE TAX MONEY.
Please pass this bill

Step Mom

Please, please pass this bill. Give deserving prisoners a second chance. We all have made mistakes–some big and some small. Knowing how imperfect we all are, can we offer some deserving and repentent inmates another shot at life!! If our answer is no, what then does this say about us as Americans and more importantly as human beings?

Step Mom

Please pass this bill. Give deserving prisoners a second chance. As we all have been given second chances, cannot we offer the same to all?

Linda Sinclair

Please pass this bill my husband is rotting away wasting money when he could be home helpng with the ills. He’s learned his lesson!

kimi

I believe this bill should be passed for so many reasons. There are first-time offenders serving terms for non-violent crimes who will be sentenced much more harshly than a person committing their 2nd Armed Robbery. These men and women locked up made a stupid decision. They know that, but should they have huge chunks of their lives taken away from them, and with that they also loose any chance at having a productive and meaningful life. I do not believe its okay to lock somebody away for SO long on such a petty crime. Please help even out those scales of justice, they are seeming a bit skewed lately.

Crystal Baker

Please pass this bill as I am fully aware that there are many good and hardworking everyday people that are serving sentences for violations that were SEVERELY blown out of proportion so that judges can appear “tough on crime” when they whole purpose is “justice” and there needs to be more to looking at violations of federal probation then just that revoke or not to revoke… Judges don’t even listen to probation officers advice… it is more ego then anything I feel!

Jean Stevens

Please pass H.R.1475 There are far too many inmates being held that do not need to be there and it cost from four to seven billion dollars a year to keep them. Clean up the Prison System and SAVE MONEY

FLOR A BARROSO

Please pass H.R.1475 There are far too many inmates being held that do not need to be there and it cost from four to seven billion.

deborah chard

Yes! Please Please PASS! especially for first time offenders. the way the system is now, you can commit a murder and get less time!just to get out and do it again whaats 5 to 10 yrs? get mixed up in drugs and get almost life! it’s not right that is NOT FAIR! there are rehab programs for drugs!

Sharon

Please pass H.R.1475 first time offenders life taken away from their families for 20 plus years everybody deserve a second change!

Sharon

Please pass H.R.1475 first time non violent offenders shouldn’t be sentenced 20 plus years away from their families for making a mistake, everybody make mistake but most get a second change.

Kathleen Z

Please pass this bill! My husbands case (in which there was no restitution or fines and no one was hurt) was taken by the Federal Government and he was threatened with taking a 5 year sentence or they said they would “get him” for 45 years! This is after he confessed about 5 minutes after he was arrested. To top it off,the state prosecutor told his attorney he would have given him probation! Punishments should fit the crime. Please help those who help themselves while serving sentences and stop the craziness of costing taxpayers 40k per year per inmate.

Janet

Support the bill by writing to the congressional committee members if you live in one of their districts. I can not contact them since I do not live in their district. Less than 5% of bills ever make it out of committee to be forwarded on to congress, senate, and the President to become law. These members need to hear from you if you want action. These state Reps and Senators will listen if you contact them. Good luck.

tay

hr 1475 needs to be passed we have to many people in prison for long periods of time for non violent crimes. The violent offenders seem to be getting a slap on the hand now a days. Its like the judicial system is saying go kill a man a get 10 years but if I find out your selling not with evidence but hear say you get 22 years. Lets fix this problem vote for HR 1475.

tay

We need the bill HR 1475 to pass so us as tax payers can stop putting so much money in the prison system and more into what we really need it for. Help our pockets and vote yes to the bill HR 1475

kemie
