The outrage over bonuses paid to AIG employees last week is a lesson in what happens when Congress legislates in haste. But the stage is already being set for Congress to lose control of the Fiscal Year 2010 spending process and commit more careless errors. Read about it in a blog post titled “The AIG Bonus Debacle: Channel Your Anger.”

Featured Items

This week the House will address a pair of bills dealing with land use management.

For one, it will debate H.R. 146, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which passed in the Senate last week.

A similar bill failed to pass in the House on a previous vote. That bill, S. 22 – also called the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 – costs about $55 per U.S. family.

The second bill the House will debate is H.R. 1404, the Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement Act.

That bill would fund emergency wildland firefighting activities on U.S. government land, and it would require the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture to develop a cohesive wildland fire management strategy.

This week, the Senate is scheduled to debate H.R. 1388, the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, which passed the House last week.

The bill seeks to increase the number of volunteers nationwide from 75,000 to 250,000. It would establish a Clean Energy Corps to encourage energy efficiency and conservation and a Veterans Service Corps to improve services for veterans.

Passage of H.R. 1388, the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, would cost the average U.S. family about $50.
