National Debt Exceeds $11 Trillion

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation tweets the national debt every day, and today it just crossed above $11 trillion dollars. That’s a lotta samolians.

In fact, $11 trillion is about $112,000 per family, or $36,000 per person. That’s your debt even if you’ve got all your credit card bills paid up – just for living here in the United States.

The Peterson folks are big on what they call “The Real National Debt.” That’s the amount of the national debt if you accounted for the government like a business, with unfunded liabilities included. The real national debt is about $56.4 trillion, which is $577,000 per family or $184,000 per person. That’s a lotta samolians.

With all this debt hanging over our heads, we’re likely to see higher interest rates and depressed growth. We might see inflation rob our dollars of power, or we might see our currency collapse altogether. These are all bad things, in case you needed that explained to you. A little governmental belt tightening is probably in order.
