Let’s Amend the Constitution – Some More!

Yesterday, we took a look at some proposed amendments to the Constitution. They generally had to do with government management-type issues: voting, congressional and presidential terms, etc. These things are all important, to be sure.

But another set of amendment proposals are the hot buttons. Let’s take a look at them.

Flag burning is, well, burning hot – and something of a perennial flame in constitutional amendment proposals. H.J. Res. 8 would amend the Constitution to allow Congress and the states to prohibit desecration of the flag. S.J. Res. 2 is its counterpart in the Senate.

Another big one with First Amendment implications is H.J. Res. 6, which would protect prayer in public schools.

More First Amendment stuff is in H.J. Res. 13, which would allow Congress and states to regulate the amount of money candidates for office accept and spend.

Now, one out of left field and one out of right field:

H.J. Res. 4 would make health care a “right of all citizens of the United States.” WooHoo! Everyone would automatically have health care!

And H.J. Res. 16 would repeal the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which allowed the federal government to levy an income tax. WooHoo! No more income tax!

As noted yesterday, the idea of amending the Constitution always starts with at least one strike against it – these hot buttons might start with two. That document should not be trifled with.

But the proposals are out there. It’s up to you what happens with them.
