Summary
As our armed forces are increasingly tasked with responding to new and unpredictable crises around the world, traditional vessels are often ill-suited to tasks ranging from disaster relief to anti-terror operations. Hovercraft allow troops and material to access more than 70 percent of the world's coastline, while only approximately 15 percent of that coastline is available to conventional boat-type landing craft.Funding will be used to acquire and deploy a new air-cushioned craft that will enhance the capabilities of the Navy, DHS/FEMA and other agencies, to operate in confined spaces such as surf zone, beach and tidal/river areas too shallow for conventional boats due to underwater hazards.
