Summary

The President's budget contained $380 million for construction of the United States Navy's first programmed Mobile Landing Platform. An additional $100 million for MLP in FY2011 would fund long lead material for the program's second and third ships sooner, and provide the Department the opportunity to accelerate delivery of the ships at lower total program costs. Additionally, procuring long lead material for the second and third of three planned MLP ships in FY2011 will help sustain skilled workforce and avoid substantial workforce disruption at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. This request would provide funding to the contractor earlier, it would not add additional funding to the existing program of record.
