Summary

Not only are the beaches in Virginia Beach a critical economic engine as a result of tourism, but they are also an important protection against hurricane and storm damage. Currently, replenishment of the beaches is three years overdue, placing the economy and the property of Virginia Beach at great risk. This 80 block commercial and residential beachfront from Rudee Inlet to Fort Story is the heart of Virginia Beachâs economy, generating over $600 million in annual economic activity generated by tourism from the beach. The project protects over $3 billion worth of property. The maintenance of the beach fronting the project seawall through sand replenishment is an integral part of the design and authorization. Failing to renourish this beach jeopardizes the prior investment of more than $100 million in federal dollars, and puts many residential and commercial properties and public facilities at risk from storm damage.
