Minor US citizen
Mr. Ron Hodges, a teacher at MHS speaks for us here. My parents are about to be deported and I have lived here all my life. I would hope the US Senate would value the opinion of Mr. Hodges in this matter instead of the business slavers and government officials here.
Reality
Yes, I would agree Ms. Doromal and Ron Hodges speak in behalf of workers and represent a moral majority of the NMI, but reality says the commonwealth needs to reduce workers unless the US makes enormous investment here. I do not think the US will invest anything in the NMI until the people of the CNMI have removed Ben Fitial and prosecuted him and his allies for many crimes against guest workers here.
Saipan Chamber of Commerce
Ron Hodges and Ms. Doromal (I have not met Ms. Doromal) speak only from a human rights stance and have not weighed the facts of our grim economic prospects.
Hodges said we need an immediate and continued elevation in our minimum wage and small business owners in Saipan are closing daily because they can not survive. Ronnie's company has no full time employees and his economic picture is skewed by his social justice convictions. Fairness and reality are often in conflict and I would think a world history person would understand that. Chamberonomics and Rononomics will lead to the downfall of the CNMI as we know it.
CNMI residency
Is the NMI realy offering permenant residency? Is there a catch and will we be able to operate businesses? Will we if we get improved status?
Dances with wolves
Irene Tantiado addressed the residency issue with heartfely clarity in her article "Dancing with wolves".
Article 12
Will the CNMI put the article 12 issues on the ballot in April. Are they voting to change to a 75 year lease?
Mimay
I think think that the federal takeover is inevitatble. Let's just hope for the best and move on.
Hu Saluda Hao
Wendy Doromal, you are the best!!!
CNMI Watchdog
Will the Maverick anti-federalization "secret" meeting group proceed with their April 2 meeting in light of the proceeding S.2739, the US stance by Kennedy & Miller on minimum wages, and the swirling controversy involving Ben Fitial?
News coverage
CNN international and the Washington Post are calling people about the situation here. Will the US ever do anything or are they waiting for the fed bill to pass?
Saipan Chamber
So what if Chamberonomics ends economics as we know know it in the CNMI...that would be great. Decent pay for work in a free market envirnment...that would be great. The US, Guam, Hawaii, and every successful country does it except China. NMI residents should want this place less like China, not more.
Disgusted
I have long supported a block on federalization and am a current Saipan Chamber of Commerce member, but after watching the economic collapse of the CNMI the last year, I have thrown in the towel and am offically pro-federalization.
We do need US investment here. We do need to remove Ben Fitial. We may, swallow my pride, need to raise the minimum wages. We need a more proactive Vistor Bureau. We need a smart, tough, no bullsh*t Governor with credibility. We need to reduce the size of our government and legislature. We need partnership plans with Guam. We need federal assistance with power and water. We need to eliminate Article 12. We need Unity, action, and a comittment or hard work.
We need to structure a new vision for a new Northern Marianas Islands.
Dreamer
We need to end the hate mail and move forward. We need to offer opportunity for our young people.
Christian values
"For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son that whosoever would believe in hime shall inherit eternal life."

Health Conscious
Saipan Tribune 03/29/08 edition>>> $7,901 for a circumcision.Parent outraged over son's hospital bill. We don't only need federal assistance with CNMI [Saipan/Rota/Tinian] power and water but most of all HEALTH care. If I got a heart problem, I'll be dead upon receipt of this ridiculous "CIRCUMCISION" hospital bill. HELLO AMERICA! Can you hear our voices here in the CNMI? How long shall we wait for you to come and save us? READ IT please.
FEDERALIZATION
Rumors swirling in DC say the federalization bill before the US Senate may pass unanimously by April 4.
May God bless America.
NMI residency core group
Will we they still have their NMI coup anti-federalization meeting at 1pm Weds?
Why would anyone jump on a losing bandwagon or enlist in a defeated army at this point?
Yea federal
Thanks to mam Wendy Doromal, Representatives George Miller & Donna Christensen, Ron Hodges, Tina Sablan, Nick Rahill, Senator Edward Kennedy, and our new Ombudsman Jim Benedetto.
Out=r thanks are genuine and lasting.
Forgettaboutit
Don't let the enemy use a devide and conquer strategy from the rules of war against long disanfranchised guest workes.
Forgettabotit until US federal labor and immigration sets the rules for us.
Saipanese
I firmly believe that the U.S. will federalize the island of Saipan to help and do what is best for it's people. It is one of Uncle Sam's territories and I don't see any reasons for them to destroy it. FEMA is there during calamities, foodstamps for the low income families, funds for the gov't, etc...These are just some of the proofs of their good intentions. We should not be afraid. Let us embrace change and progress. Let us dance to the tune of this changing world.
REDERALIZATION
The vote date in the Senate is expected before 4-11-08.
Watchdog
Will the Fitial administration cancel PL-15-108 after federalization or use it for the one year transition period.
It is my understanding that the grandfathering provision that the Fitial followers got taken from the fed bill will be added as s.2739 provides before 2 years. This is certain for guest workers legally employed.
Curious
Does anyone know what opinion Tina Sablan, Wendy Doromal, Ron Hodges, and Jim Benedetto have about NMI residency?
Answer
Curious - Wendy Doromal has it pasted on her web site at unheardnomore.blogspot.com & she is against and thinks guest workers will get green cards. Hodges has written articles against CNMI residency as he thinks it is meant to undermine federalization. Jim Benedetto issued a statement that it is against the law. I have not heard Rep. Sablan's offical statement but I have heard she likes this plan to replace PL-108 for the transition period.
Curious
Why then does Dekada support it?
Answer
I am not sure the Dekada supports it but perhaps they think it is better for thos enot legally employed, which may be a large number here, in fact, the Governor said "all those people are illegal and I'm going to deport them". Their lawyer seems to have confidenc in Fitial according to comments he is writing on other blogs.
Federalization ?
Is the date 4-11-08 accurate for the Senate bill passing?
Will the FFF (fitial fed fighters) offer NMI residency for guest workers in the transition period or will PL-15-108 apply?
Will there be amnesty for illegal workers?
Rallies
There is a meeting for FFF (fitial freedom fighters) across from Hopwood April 2 to discuss NMI residency.
There will be a prayer rally or vigil April 5 at AMP for pro-federalization guest workers, concerned residents, and the local concerned citizens.
NMI Senate vote
FYI
The Senate will vote on and unanamously pas S.2739 no later than April 11, 2008.
President Bush is expected to sign this within ten days.
Scam
If DC lawyers know the fed bill is about to pass, why are they in big hurry for NMI residency? It must be sum scam or BS.
Facts
I agree with the Doromal, Hodges, Tina Sablan, and others on federalization, but this economy can not endure another wage hike.
Stanley stiffled
NMI House of Representatives member, Stanely Torres, has had his wings clipped regarding privilege speeches in the CNMI Congress. Torres is infamous for running his mouth and defaming people while hiding behind legislative immunity. He has a long history of this conduct and is a total disgrace to the commonwealth.
A couple of his recent works were blastinf former DPS head Rebecca Warfield for after hours party conduct and the author off the now famous, Ron Hodges, "persona non grata" resolution that called him a racist, threatened him, and asked him to vacate the CNMI. Some of the newly elected and more progressive legislators (not to mention more smarter) have had enough of his antics.

Change underwear #1
During the 1980’s, the CNMI had a long term residency law in effect. And promptly changed it. Via repeal by the CNMI Legislature.
Now these same longtime CNMI politicos urge those so long wholly disenfranchised by the CNMI’s laws and policies-----those being the overwhelming majority of the CNMI private sector workforce, labeled CNMI “non-resident” workers despite years of de facto CNMI presence-----to consider/accede to newly proposed CNMI “long-term-resident” laws of some type?
These of course the same CNMI politicos who in wholesale disregard, and utter contempt, for CNMI constituents have over the decades enacted-then-repealed, enacted-then-ignored, and enacted-without-enforcement, CNMI laws, time and again. As to minimum wage. As to fair labor standards. As to workers’ rights. As to immigration. As to retirement fund obligations. As to fuel surcharges. As to gambling. As to garments. etcetera ad nauseam.
Change underwear #. 2
And, of course, used CNMI taxpayer funds, to the tune of $10 million, to fund felonious lobbyist Jack “Honest Abe” Abramoff to make waves, for BenTan’s puppeteer-in-charge, in Willie-fully and garmently-transparent-fashion?
Knowing as we all do, that longtime CNMI politicos change their laws significantly more often than their underwear---once a week at minimum, it seems, in less severe cases---how can these longtime CNMI politicos now expect the disenfranchised but intelligent masses to now rely, with any sense of good faith or common sense or reasonable expectation of fairness, on any CNMI legislation, as to “long-term resident status”? Or CNMI legislation as to any other matter affecting these workers’ human rights, dignity, equality, or well-being?
CNMI residency meeting
The CNMI residency meeting attracted about 100 to 125 and I counted. Many do not trust the sincerity of the lawyers who spoke for hours. Some of the NMI residency supporters have been illegals for years.
CNMI Labor Department Scam
Why do we need Feds to come? This is one reason>>>>SAIPAN TRIBUNE [04/05/08] Labor staff shocked by arrest of 2 employees
By Ferdie de la Torre
Reporter
Department of Labor Director Barry Hirshbein said he and everyone in the department were surprised and shocked at the recent arrest of two Labor employees for alleged involvement in bribery and a conspiracy to forge documents.
“This is a big shock to me,” said Hirshbein when Saipan Tribune asked him for comments on the arrest of Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero and Janel Alepuyo, both employees at Labor's Application Processing Section..read more on
Saipan Tribune website.
Sure
I would not ever quote Barry H. on anything as he is cabinet member of NMI Governor Fitial and directs labor under Deanne Siemer's orders. She is a contributor to the Island Slave Law, PL-15-108.
CNMI reporter
Ron Hodges, Wendy Doromal, and Federal Ombudsman Jim Benedetto already reported antics from this den of corruption....no surprizes here.
CNMI reporter
ps One worker group here Dekada has aligned themselves with the labor head to work a NMI residency deal. It is viewed by some workers as viable for workers afraid of the uS system if they are illegal, have operated businesses, or have participated in immigration fraud. Other workers, mostly those legally employed are hesitant to deal with people who have fought so long and hard to screw them in the past. Time will tell.
CNMI reporter
The pro federalization group, led by the Human Dignity Movement, will have a prayer vigil tonight at American Memorial Park. The anti-fed workers in coolition with business leadership will boycott this prayer service for federalization.
CNMI reporter
Human Dignity movement led by Jerry Custudio collected 700 signatures at the Sat. evening prayer service. Irene Tantiado, Tina Sablan, Ron Hodges, Mark Hanson and others were guest speakers.
Ptayer Rally - Ron Hodges
Guest workers here have exhibited unimaginable patience. Hopefully, this never ending struggle will soon be over. I believe S.2739, currently before the US Senate, will soon pass unanimously. I also believe the President of the United States will sign this bill into law, and the US will gain control of the NMI labor and immigration system.
I believe this will foster a new era in the commonwealth. I believe this will create a community driven by a free market system. I believe the standards of living, wages, and the quality of life for our long mistreated guest workers and our indigenous populace will begin to improve. I believe the United States is our friend, certainly not our enemy.
Rally - Ron Hodges cont.
All of you here, at American Memorial Park this evening, have a claim to America that no other immigrants before you can boast. All of you here can be proud that you have served your time. You have worked, labored, and toiled to build a part of America. America is a country of immigrants. No immigrants before you were brought to US soil with promises of work in America, and now, in many cases 20 years after your arrival, you still do not have working status in America. You still do not have the freedom to change employers. You still do not have the freedom to travel or move. You still do not have the right to bring your family, including spouses and children to live beside you. You are officially veterans of the Northern Mariana Islands, and whether you are Filipino, Bangladeshi, Chinese, or other, no immigrant group before you can boast what you can.
Rally Ron Hodges cont.
I can assure you, that every decent mainland American that knows this story is proud of each of you, and of each of your contributions. I assure you, that every decent American aware that you have long been denied unalienable human rights is outraged. I assure you, this case will come out. I assure you, that justice, no matter how slow, will prevail here.
I will never stop highlighting this case until the U.S. grants improved status and green cards for our long abused guest workers. I will never veer from the belief that each of you has already earned the right to an unobstructed path to US citizenship. No immigrants in U.S. history, not my ancestors or anyone else anywhere, can boast the accomplishments you can.
Rally Tina Sablan speech
I am sad tonight, my friends, because just four months after the deeply moving success of the Unity March, we have found ourselves divided once again. I am not talking about divisions between those who support federalization and those who do not. I am talking about divisions among us, among people who want the same thing, and that is improved status for long-term foreign workers.
Not too long ago, after the federal hearing in August, I talked about receiving a call from someone who asked me how I could possibly support “those animals” – meaning many of you and your families.
Tin speech cont
And it hurt many of you, and it hurt me, and it also hurt many other citizens in the community to hear that man’s reaction to my statement at the hearing, just as it had hurt him and many other people in the community to hear my statement. Some people told me that I should not have even talked about it. But I felt that it had to be said. We had to talk about it, because how else can we heal this community if we do not first bring out all the ugliness and the hurt that we are feeling and experiencing into the open?
And so here I have found myself once again staring at something that maybe some people would rather I not talk about. And once again, I have found myself feeling deeply that it needs to be said.
Tina cont
Some of us have been upset and suspicious at the meeting that others of us have been having with Ms. Deanne Siemer and Ms. Maya Kara to discuss the possibility of locally-granted improved status for long-term foreign workers. Some terrible names have been called of each other – including “inhuman,†“idiot,†and “traitor.†These names are just as bad as “animal.†And as a result, people who agree with the intent of tonight’s prayer rally are not here because they have not been invited or because they are hurting.

I understand the distrust that some of us might feel, but I do not understand the impulse to tear each other down simply because we disagree about the motives of other individuals. We cannot blame anyone for feeling an inkling of hope and for wanting to at least hear and explore the proposal that was being offered. We should not attack each other for going a different way, when the end goal, in all our hearts, remains the same, and especially when we are this close to the goal.
Crab Mentality
We need to be united in our cause. Don't let personal reasons put you and the others in disagreements. The fight is not over yet. BE UNITED AND WE NEED IT NOW!!!

whatever Ms. Doromal is doing on behalf of guest workers she is doing great job. It is a great furtune for guest workers she is being a channel to bring out the facts, feelings & rights of the guest workers. i think she is doing this on humanitarian ground to help out those people who are suffering a lot but no courage to speak out for their rights.
Support this bill
See http://unheardnomore.blogspot.com for news on this bill and the updated information relevant to the status of the disenfranchised foreign contract workers in the CNMI. This site is maintained by human rights advocate Wendy Doromal who worked on this issue since the late 1980's.

Finally
When President George Bush signs this law. FINALLY, there'll be hope. THANK YOU U.S. CONGRESS!!!!
Yea Federal
Thanks so much to Reps. George Miller & Donna Christensen, Senators Bingaman and Kennedy, human rights advocate Wendy Doromal, CNMI Rep. Tina Sablan, Chamberonomics Ron Hodges, US federal employees Allen Staymen, David Cohen, and Federal Ombudsman Jim Benedetto. Human Dignity Movement founder Gerry Custudio should also be admired.
Thank you so much and our gratitude or your work should never be forgotten.
PROUD
I am so proud of those who have struggled for so long and those that have given so much in work, time, money, and intellegent support for our kos.
Guest Worker Mom
All my children are U.S. citizen and have lived here for 23 years, almost half of my life and yet they call us alien workers. My children are asking why am I still an alien to a place that I have lived for so many years? I believe in American justice.
wendy
i have read that wendy has won an important award (listed on dailykos.com under saipan usa and wrote by ron hodges) and i am sure she diserved it. in the future, cgw need americans they can trust on issues and i think wendy is our best choice. ron is also very smart on these issues and loyal to us.
Wew
What good does CNMI have with this bill? A bunch of crap undermining our self-determination. Speaking of greater border control, look at the mainland U.S., its back door to Mexico is heavily guarded but is wide open to illegals entering. The irony is killing me.
Sosima
Improved power service, health care, education, working condition, government financial disposition and many more that will benefit the almost dead economy of the CNMI, that's why this "federalization bill" is good. Accept the fact that CNMI needs change, I do not want to pay $1.00/kw on power in the future and still experience "power outage" for one to four hours a day just like what is happening now. At first, I was against it but WHO or WHAT can save us now? I want my children to study in school and not to be sent home because of power outage then, they can't even review their lessons because again, due to power outage! I always imagine myself working in the government and receiving a "good" pay so that i can fill-up my gas tank but i am stuck in a private company who is giving minimum $3.55/hour wage. Anyway, WHATEVER, i welcome federalization with open arms.
thanks
after seeing the 4 options on the goa choices for cgw, it is wonderful and should help everyone. ms. doromal and mr hodges appear to have been right examining this law for its options and how it would work and who it will help...thanks so much
WeW
This bill doesn't say anything about CUC's power problem, or wages. IT WANTS TO CONTROL US! Thats the intention of this BILL. Because of locals voting for the same person to office thinking that they will be given FREE money, FREE Transportation not thinking that WHO can help the entire CNMI. CNMI's a JOKE. Who can HELP us is only US. The federal government cannot help us. They are busy funding the war in Iraq! Billions and Billions of dollars. Do you think BUSH will give us money for power plants. It is only us that can make the difference if we are smart and not Griddy. The way I look at this is just another bureacratic red tapes bound to be tangle all over again.
Sosima
Can anybody tell me a US state that remained poor and undeveloped? Who is financially helping the CNMI and bailing them out always, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!. SO MAKE IT FOREVER, INSTEAD OF PIECEMEAL. BUSH WILL NOT GIVE US MONEY FOR POWER PLANT ALONE. THE U.S. CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT WILL DO SO. Keep your mind open, open for great changes to come. U.S. will not make CNMI poorer and back to the Dark Ages. How much longer would I and the rest of my family suffer? I can barely afford the price of gasoline! We need to stabilize everything in CNMI. I hope my children would be responsible, sensible and intelligent future lawmakers and make good laws. We have enough of this rotten government system. WE NEED CHANGE NOW!!!
Unbelievable
Wew, even Superman and the League of Superheroes can't help us now. Accept it, CNMI NEEEDS HELP! I wonder if you are one the the rich and can afford individuals. Perhaps you can sell your lands and properties so that you can give money to people like us. Accept it too, that we are not smart for voting irresponsible and greedy lawmakers [not all]. Now, prove how can we help each other and make this CNMI world turn around? Ohhh...you are planning a revolution, exclude me.
WeW
Unbelievable, If get youself a job and stop watching fiction TV shows then maybe we can talk. I worked hard and do commonsense spending. Its people like you that drain this economy, instead of being a welfare case get up and work and stop voting for people that you and I know, ARE CORRUPT! For your information, we don't need a revolution, nor any form of disruption and menace to society. The power of your vote is our prove that we could turn this island, if not the world, around! Stop Sleeping and Wake Up! One day we will be overrun and that my friend is unbelievable.
Enevitable
Yes, someday this place will be overrunned by other people of different nationals and that is a fact! The U.S. is built by people of different ethnic background. The world belong to the people including these islands. Embrace the coming of a new Generations.
Facts
Oh yea, the heroic Wendy Doromal, Ron Hodges, and Tina Sablan have helped the poor workers get tickets back to PI and China when NMI employers can't pay the US rates. Thanks you heroes.
FYI
The three you mentioned above did a world of good helping poor workers in the CNMI and poor locals who have long been under paid as well.
They are actually genuises with much courage.
Wendy Doromal has been historian for this case for 20 years. She has deserving received awards for lifetime acheivement in civil rights and her testimony to the Congress was beyond reproach.
Tina Sablan gave a local perspective in her manefestos for change and was then elected to public office...a miracle there, and rallied a unity march with spectacular attendance.
Mr. Hodges sideswiped the Saipan Chamber of Commerce the day they arrived to testify in DC, rendering their entire case as a conspiracy of lies, dared the 15th Congress to stand up against big business, organized a general strike, and wrote "spit in the soup".
Help
Will US law or NMI prevail during the one year transition period and can anyone explain the transition period?
To FYI
Tina will never be elected again and when the US hangs the NMI out to dry she will be blamed for federalization to voters.
Ms. Doromal is probably planning a book deal in Florida.
Ron Hodges should watch his back for the rest of his life.
S.2739
Bill passed House today 291-117 and Senate 91-4.
Thanks to the US Representatives and Senators, DOI and Ombudsman, Tina and Ron, and of course Wendy.
Information
Will we get green cards or not?

No need for further explanation, this bill is passed and waiting for Pres. BUSH's signature.
honeybabe88
Yes, this bill is passed and just waiting for the President's signature and technically, Pres. Bush has 10 days to either sign it or veto it... or else, it will automatically become a law after the alloted days....

...and Justice for All! 2 more days and/or it will automatically become a law or be vetoed. this is democracy in all paradox. remember that Progress is always a Bargain. Be Smart but be humane and Be honest even if others are not. The time of Reckoning is near!
Lanya
what is the US going to do with illegals, cheats, immigration fraud, fake business, and fake cases?
if they stay we will be a sad place and government will have encouraged cheats
CollectiveSoul
as it is said, the time of reckoning is near! Every illegals will probably be deported and all that is fraud will be prosecuted to the full extent of the federal law. But there is always a due Process, and there is always a rule of law, Mercy over Justice or viceversa - Know the Rules so that we know how to follow or break them.
Life, Liberty, Equality and Justice, this embodied the spirit of an American, and anyone who believe in it.
s.2739 signed into law
President George W. Bush has signed s.2739 and federalized the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands.
