This bill is now in conference committee with the House version, HR 2638. The House version includes an appropriation of $50 million for implementing the Real ID Act. Efforts to add to that funding in the Senate were defeated. The ACLU and 65 other organizations have sent a letter to the bill conferees asking them to strip funding for this failed, invasive program.

The letter can be found at:

The funding of for our Department of Homeland Security's Nanotechnology R&D projects should be postponded until more about the enviromental, health and social impacts a better understood. The lack of policy, oversite and accountability of projects in progress are covered in a veil of secretcy because these projects will not withstand public scrutiny. DARPA, HARPA, NSA, NSF, FBI and etc...pose a greater threat to the freedoms of all Americans than any external terrorist organization. The advancement in technology empowers these agency to have far to much control and when billions of
dollars are at stake we risk creating a new bread of terrorist.

I agree with you you Silkey. Homeland Security is the biggest scam to take out more taxes!
