The LIBRARIAN Act won't necessarily help librarians because it won't cancel other education loans that graduate students use to pay for their education.
Both H.R. 1877 and S. 1121 (the two versions of the LIBRARIAN Act) intend to increase the recruitment and retention of librarians, in an attempt to overcome an unforeseeable "librarian shortage."
But such a naive effort overlooks a very important fact: No evidence exists to support any notion of a "librarian shortage."
Although there are concerns that it may occur because of anticipated retirements of older librarians, one should consider that ongoing budget cuts have reduced the need for so many librarians anyway.
Instead, one must anticipate the reliance on underpaid library assistants to keep libraries functioning without spending excess money on professionally trained librarians.
