H.R. 5340, The Upper Mississippi River Basin Protection Act (1 comment ↓)

  • This item is from the 109th Congress (2005-2006) and is no longer current. Comments, voting, and wiki editing have been disabled, and the cost/savings estimate has been frozen.

H.R. 5340 would direct the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to establish a network to monitor sediments and nutrients in the upper Mississippi River Basin. The bill also would require the agency to create an inventory of existing monitoring efforts at federal, state, and local levels. The authority of the agency to carry out the monitoring program would terminate 10 years after the bill's enactment. Finally H.R. 5340 would authorize the appropriation of funds to the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a comprehensive assessment of water resources in the Mississippi River Basin.
