There is not one Republican calling for an extension of Federal Unemployment benefits. Total disgrace. What do these politicians know about being unemployed? My last position lasted over 23 years before the company closed down. I have spent every single day looking for employment since February 2013. I have 2 interviews; mailed over 200 resumes, and made numerous phone calls looking for a job. This is the worst economy I have seen in my many years of working. There are no jobs available. I have paid into this benefit for enough years and feel that myself and other long-term unemployed persons should expect a congress that recognizes the horrid economy and pass a bill to extend benefits.

If so, please let us know. If not, please stop jumping to conclusions about your fellow posters.

Thank you.

THe Truth 1/2

January 4, 2014, 9:57pm (report abuse)

This whole situation is a farce repeated many times by the political buffoons in congress every time the unemployment extension comes up.

The GOP supported by big money & being true to their space cadet ideological right wing base oppose spending even though it produces needed economic stimulation not to mention avoiding the economic devastation to many families.

Now lets not get enamored with the Dems. They make the right noises but when they had a little leverage before Christmas they grabbed a weak deal & went home. Now they are back & pointing their finger at the GOP saying "Bad GOP!" In other words they are using this for political show to demonize the GOP not that they don't deserve it. How many X-mases were ruined?

The goal should be the help people who need help but they couldn't even pass a job bill or maybe get back some of those offshored manufacturing job by restricting imports or even sending some of those 12 million illegal immigrants home & freeing up a few jobs.

The Truth 2/2

January 4, 2014, 9:58pm (report abuse)

We need to restructure our political system to produce results just ideological fairy tales & political bickering that produce nothing but empty rhetoric. Both parties are basically out of touch with our needs. Don't be fooled by the Dems either. Their goal is to damage the GOP not help the unemployed.

The GOP has done little to help this country. They are a tool of the wealthy & have been since the time of Teddy Roosevelt. Conservatism is a philosophy that does not make sense. They worship the past and apply outdated solutions to modern problems but at the end it's always some kind of tax benefit which is their real goal

We have a corrupt political system that is controlled by lobbyists funded by big money that confuses the issue. Let me make it simple. We have 7% unemployment rate and flat wage growth for the last 30 years and all the politicians can talk about is gay marriage, immigrant rights & those freaks on Duck Dynasty but no jobs bill???

Sorry no answer just deep disgust!

@The Truth 1/2 & 2/2

Re: "Sorry no answer just deep disgust!"

If you're serious about that, I just want to say, it doesn't do any good to allow this crap that goes on in DC to get to you.

Youe said, "We need to restructure our political system to produce results."

Yeah, not much is being accomplished in Washington. But it should be seen as obvious that the people as a whole aren't bothered enough to even protest the gridlock in place there, let alone push for structural changes.

This is what we got, and what we deserve as a people who are too complacent, lazy or dumb to work actively for improvement, or at least make their voices heard loud and clear by calling in to radio talk shows, prodding their reps in DC, organizing, and pressing their TV news networks to give them a voice on the air.

But, they seem to be more interested in who's winning Oscars.

It won't do any good to get angry or depressed over things you can't change yourself and the majority won't even try to.

Hello old friends.

@CalifGirl

Thurstan? I guess you fooled me. Maybe there is more truth in my joke that you are Patriot's twin than than I realized? I hope you are doing well. Been over a year since we communicated. Kind of missed all of the people here. This was always a useful outlet for my frustration after i listened to the morning news with my breakfast & of course Patriot's convoluted view of the worlds was always entertaining not to mention the overreaction I would get with an insightful jab. (laugh)

In a sense we really did to get to know each other and though our views often were at odds we had a certain respect for each other. I can honestly say my mornings were diminished after the board was closed down by the Bleep who runs this site & his attempt to force this into that unworkable petition model.

Since you and your twin frequent the same type of sites you must find him & of course T as well.

I'll start checking in on a regular basis.

It's good to hear from you. I knew that was your writing. You've got a nice tight way of expressing yourself that I've always envied. Flubbed myself half way to a PhD before my lack of discipline & non existent study habits sunk me (can't start a thesis 3 days before it's due and expect a good result--laugh) but I never really got the knack of writing. I write the way I talk and always have. Punctuation was always sprinkled in afterwards as an after thought. (laugh)

Thought a good deal about you when Hurricane Sandy hit. Hope you were able to dodge it.

The gadget acquisition fund became robust enough for me to acquire a 7 inch tablet. Turned out to be a real game changer. If you don't have one you got to get one. With a WiFi router it eliminated most of my desktop usage. I only use the desktop when I need to type a lot. Newspapers & literately tens of thousands of downloaded books, not to mention using it in the comfort of a bed, recliner or lawn chair beats my den.

@Same Old, March 19, 1:41pm

March 20, 2014, 4:07am (report abuse)

Thanks for the kind words regarding how I express myself in my posts. We all have our individual ways of communicating. It’s good to be correct, and fine to be eloquent where fitting, but the most important thing is getting across what we’re trying to say, and I think most of us here do at least as well as I do.

Hurricane Sandy is just a vague memory now. This unusually nasty winter sticks in memory more than that. Recently, strong gusts snapped two long, fat branches off the tall dead tree not far from the sidewalk. One got tangled in lower ones and ended-up hanging vertically well above the ground. If that were to fall on someone, it could have killed them. Getting it down wasn't easy, but my wife and I finally succeeded in freeing it up and letting it drop (thud).

If something’s going to kill me, I don’t want it to be a damn dead tree. I’m leaving the rest to a professional tree removal service.

But, let’s see... the topic is supposed to be H.R. 3546... huh.

Good Morning .......

Thought I would check in here before I head out this morning(like old times). Good to see you both in here. Now, all we need is Pats and T and a few others. I am really surprised more unemployed are not frequenting these threads with the UI Bills that have been introduced. There is no traffic in Open Congress or Unemployed Freinds, either. @CalifGirl

@you mentioned getting a 7 inch tablet.

Same model with the 32GB. I got it in July of last year when it first came out. I've been very happy with it. I guess the determining factor is how you use it. The biggest criticism I hear is it doesn't have a slot for additional memory. I use mine for browsing, reading newspapers & reading books. I have around 800 books on it and I still have 23GB of memory left. Video takes a lot of memory but you can always connect & transfer to your PC to manage the memory. I've never understood why you would want to watch a movie on a 7 in screen but some people do?

Apple is a good deal more expensive. Kindle & Nook have a lot of their own content which is annoying. Samsung I hear has their own quirks too. The off brands are dice roll. Most of the features on the Nexus 7 (2013) are still either state of the art or very close. It has worked for me. Other than Apple they are all android so the differences are probably not that great.

@If something’s going to kill me... damn dead tree.

In early July 2012 it almost happened to me. I still can't believe how lucky I got. A big 50-60 foot tall ash tree, trunk was 4-5 feet around. It blew over in the middle of the night& just missed my house. It fell between my car & and the house. Some of the thinner branches tore off the gutter and one branch punctured the roof on my porch which was easily fixed. It missed the car completely. I can't even imagine the damage if hit the house but it would of been major. The whole house shook when it fell. It fell across my steps & completely blocked my porch. I had to cut my way out with an underpowered electric chain saw to get out. The tree was actually on city land so they came & removed it but it took them a week to show up. I still marvel at where it fell. A couple feet in either direction & it would cased big problems. Guess you got to get lucky sometimes.

I suspected you had gotten a Nexus because i remember we had both mentioned it way back.

Anyways, did you get the LTE or wi-fi only version. I got the wi-fi version, only, and am now having second thoughts that I should have gotten the LTE version. I have wi-fi at home and there are plenty of wi-fi spots around, but one of the reasons i got it was so I could use a card reader and I might not be able to use it if I can't pick up a wi-fi. Also, mine does not charge if it is turned on. It only charges when turned off. Does yours do that?

As far as watching movies, like you, I cannot see doing that on a tablet, even a 10 inch one. Besides using a card reader, I just wanted one for browsing and reading the "news." I was pleasantly surprised by the camera on it. Not too bad

Are you using the charger supplied with the Nexus or a generic knock-off? When I got my Nexus I had already had a charger plugged in by my bed from my smart phone. It had a longer cord & I was too lazy to reach behind my night stand to switch them so I used it. Though the plug is identical they charger at a different rate. The generic charger took forever for a recharge, The nexus charger will charge in about 2 hours & the charge is good for about 10-12 hours of heavy use. Unless your doing something extreme you should get a full day use out of it. Yes my unit will charge when I'm using it but I've almost neve found it necessary & with the short recharge cord it's cumbersome.

To start you need to define the level of data usage you are comfortable with & pay only for that.

Cick on Google play icon then Apps & type in "My Data Manager" in the search line. Download app, it's free. This will break down your data usage by day/week/month as well as what apps are using data & your data usage by connection WiFi. mobile etc.

LTE model was not available when I got mine but there is another option. Have y7ou considered a mobile hot spot? Lot more variety there. Most cell phone data plans want a monthly fee & if your not using much it's a waste. If all you need is a connection for the card reader or limited use and otherwise free WiFi will suffice you might want to try this.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Internet-on-the-Go-Mobile-Hotspot-3G/20665535

There may be others like it but this allows you to buy 3GB for $45 & you can take up to a year to use it. If you try to use WiFi when possible & stay away from video & limit your browsing this can last a long time.

I am using the manufacturers charger that came with the Nexus. I GOOGLED this issue and it appears many others have had/having the same problem with both the 2012 & 2013 versions. I called Amazon(where I bought it) this morning and they are going to send me a replacement since I am within their 30 day return policy. Never heard of “city chicken” but I figured from the context that it wasn’t a derogatory term for a woman from New York. I looked it up on Wikipedia and found: “City chicken (also known in some locations as mock drumsticks or mock chicken) is an entrée consisting of cubes of meat (usually pork), ... [etc.]... Despite the name of the dish, city chicken almost never contains chicken.”

Sounds okay, but I prefer real chicken to pork... e.g., baked thighs or drumsticks with,,, yeah... mash and gravy. But... I like Hershey’s chocolate, too, so my taste can’t be all that cultivated.

Regarding your take oo what’s going on in Washington, what really amazes me is that millions of grown people with normal faculties continue to tolerate the meaningless bull, “dog & pony shows” and disingenuous talk that goes on perpetually (except during holidays and vacations) in the legislature while critical needs of the country remain on hold. Did a little reading about the charging issue. No hard conclusions but it appears to be the android software upgrade 4.42 or KitKat doesn't handshake real well with electrical current requirements going through the USB port. Appears Nexus is not the only tablet experiencing this issue. What version of android where using? Sending it back for a new one is definately the right choice. I upgrade to KitKat with no issues so if that is the only issue is a bit fuzzy.

The best way I heard it expressed is some people for a variety of reasons are not dealing with a fact based reality. Certainly big money through the media is distorting the picture but so much of what they are proposing is contrary to people's self interest and economically flawed. They have become so invested in am ideology that the facts are irrelevant or they arrange them to get there own conclusions.

I have a good friend I used to work with He's intelligent & has a graduate degree in finance. Not somebody you would think would get too far reality but he completely ignores reality when it comes to gvrmnt or politics. He has answers to everything most of which make little sense. He repeats spin he's heard from talk radio or his extreme right wing friends. He religious & is fervent believer in the bible. He once told me the earth is only 6000 years old. We've had some intense conversations over the years & honestly I've begun to avoid them because he makes my head hurt. H.R. 589 was a very popular topic, really successful in the number of posts it drew (over 15,000!). (Incidentally, as I recall, you were both the first and the last person to post on that thread, which ended around mid January, 2013.)

If we were to go back to that discussion and took a look at its history, I think we’d find that the number of people taking part had eventually dwindled to just a few “regulars” and a troll or so. Subsequent related bills have drawn very few comments. Whether the multitude of posters that took part in “the old days” found jobs and are now working or just have given up looking for work and are no longer interested in the topic, or are destitute and off line, who knows? One thing we do know is that the jobs market isn’t exactly booming. So why aren’t they here or in similar discussions? Maybe most have decided that it’s pointless and too frustrating to talk about it. Or, maybe they’re doing okay now.

@ “ ...some people ... are not dealing with a fact based reality.”

As a favor to an elderly woman, with my little bit of college German, I once translated a letter from an old uncle of hers that had been written in 1946 in war devastated Germany but been put aside and gone unread for decades because she didn’t know the language and had no clue as to what he was saying. Living in bombed out squalor, raising his orphaned granddaughter, he bitterly recounted how the people, ripe for an economic panacea, had been fooled and molded by the Nazis.

What he described makes me think today of the incessant propaganda and bleating of the pilots of talk radio, who are bought and paid for by big money but profess to be advocates of the common folk. I’m not calling either group Nazis, but they are distorters... with many listeners.

Being led by the nose and ignoring reality is a dangerous psychological pit to fall in or let ourselves slide into. It can’t make things better.

@a dangerous psychological pit to fall in...

I agree but how do you stop it. Big money is controlling the message. They've convinced a large segment of this country that big gvrmnt & taxes are the problem even though we have less taxes & smaller gvrmnt than any other time in modern history. They reduce the revenue (taxes) forcing gvrmnt to reduce services then blame the gvrmnt & use that as a reason to cut taxes further.

They claim capitalism & free enterprise will give us this magical level of prosperity but they offshore as much labor as possible & use every contrivance to limit their taxes. Education has become prohibitively expensive & is no longer a guarantee of a job. Since the Fed has been able to control interest rates there is little incentive (inflation) to invest. We have a stagnant economy where growth is made through consolidations which also further erodes this fairy tale free markets we supposedly enjoy.

Same Old 2/3

Gvrmnt spending for WWII broke the great depression. The cold war forced the Gvrmnt to manage our economy. Production of goods was kept domestically & this generated high wages witch also sustained our markets. Once the cold war ended WTO & Nafta opened our markets to cheap goods but what left was jobs. Lots of jobs & nothing was done. The unions were diminished & with that their political clout so we were left with a economy that is no longer in recession & hasn't been for several years but jobs & wages have shrunk along with the middle class.

Gvrmnt is not the bad guy but the tool of big money. Through the lobbyists they control our Gvrmnt not us! The level of hypocrisy of our political system is mind boggling. I think a fair number of Americans know this. This unemployment extension expired 3 months ago. Try no income for 3 months. What is that doing to a million plus families? Wonder if those words capitalism & free enterprise ring hollow when someone is loosing their house. The Job figures in this country are still very high we just got used to them and lets not forget those wonderful minimum wage jobs at Walmart or McDonalds & lets not forget the only way out of this is to give the billionaires additional tax cuts so they can cheat the country on their taxes & they may create a few more minimum wage jobs.

Where am I going with this? I am not sure but I used to believe in this country. I knew the politicians were a bit dishonest but I always figured in the end they would do the right thing. Not anymore! It's become politically popular to hurt people for some Mickey Mouse ideology that cooked up to limit taxes & bolster a billionaire bottom line.

He lost a steak dinner to me over the last presidential election. He almost cried when they called the election early for Obama. Then there was the time I got a hold of his TV remote & accessed the parental controls & locked up him out of the Fox network. I know they endorse only the parts of science, logic and archaeology that are consistent with their beliefs (which, relatively, isn’t much) and reject the rest. Many are good people, but, out of frustration, I gave up talking about religion with them.

I also find arguing with adamant, as you call them, “right wingers,” frustrating.

Mental problems? Me? (laugh I think to some extent we all have them. By almost any yardstick the world we live in doesn't make sense. To function in this world we have little choice but go through a certain amount of mental abuse. There has to be scars & possibly deep wounds. Do we consider ourselves mentally healthy just because we have found ways to be happy an ignore everything & not push back at the obvious craziness.

We adapt & cope & if our actions don't harm others or do damage to ourselves we are producing a rational course. One that hopefully allows us to function in a crazy world. My method of coping is somehow to be entertained to find humor & ridiculousness in people's actions, to embrace sarcasm as a sword rather than anger or violence & not letting my frustration push me into a wall I will just destroy myself over.

But even if that’s the case, most people don’t appreciate others’ attempts to ridicule them, often see the perpetrator as a wise ass or insufferable nut, and can get very nasty in their own defense. I don't worship Obama but I do RESPECT the job he has and was VOTED for as it relates to POTUS, just look at the boat load of messes left behind by GWB and Cheney and dumped onto Obama's lap to fix which we know 12 TRILLION of debt can't be washed away in 1 year or 5 years and Obama said that back in 2009 but the repubs and conservatives could care less, their priority is lining their pockets via PACs, etc compliments of freedomworks and Koch brothers, just follow the paper trail.
