I think this is a good thing. It recognizes the service and a

sacrifice of a group of veterans who served overseas during a time of great change in our world. Rather than Ronald Reagan receiving all the credit for winning the Cold War, it is appropriate for those who actually served during that time to receive a little recognition as well.

John Dough

A service medal is different than a medal for "heroism", of course you already knew this. Your hate will be assuaged when you get right with God.

Nothing appropriate about this. These duds did nothing for which they should receive a medal. Sitting around on their fat bums does not warrant any recognition.

It is clear that the nations educational system of teaching our history has gone down hill. I served over 11 years. My parents signed for me to join the reserves at 17 1/2 in 1972. I did my basic at 18. I served four years in the reserves and then over seven years active duty including in Korea. I am a permanently disabled service connected veteran by the VA for neurological and mobility problems incurred while in the service. I take over 50 pills a day for my disabilities and utilize a service dog for my service connected disabilities to have some independence. You are right that I have sat on my butt, many days in my wheelchair. I am also a life member of the VFW for my Korean service but I am also only a cold war veteran. What I get from some of these comments is that my service time did not matter I was just enjoying it.

I didn't understand about the reply name.

You can see by the last post that this person is probably not a vet. Even if he says he is why would he say "sniveling brother vets" unless he is not one.

Truthfully, I am already a 100% service connected vet with all my benefits, that must irk him. Funny my fellow post members at the VFW don't treat me with disrespect, I was an elected officer of the post. These people are a group that will protest any veteran benefit as their posts represent. They get their jolly's knocking vets. They would love nothing better than to take away all the benefits vets have and dismantle the VA.

I feel sorry for their apparent mental problems and their need not only to state an opposition to this bill but to berate and knock the self esteem of vets that served their country honorably. All I see them do is sit on their butts and attack and bully vets. Remember most bullies are cowards and jealous.

2 hot wars

March 7, 2011, 6:14pm (report abuse)

This medal is nonsense. It makes a mockery of real medals. All but a bare few who will wear this did little more dangerous than face the potential of war. Soldiers should not want a medal for just doing what is a matter of course, what is the normal job. We don't get decorated for doing our job, but for doing something extraordinary, such as serving in a military campaign involving combat, not merely the monthly alert. Sorry, but serving on the Fulda Gap may have been a little scary at times, but it was your job, you likely were a volunteer, and it did not merit any more than the Overseas Medal or the achievement medal you got. If a handful got shot at on the DMZ, that is no reason to give hundreds of thousands a medal.

This is pandering to the ego of veterans and by the look of the comments is reaping a mighty harvest . . .

I am a Cold War Veteran, as well as, a Gulf War Veteran and a Veteran of The Global War On Terror. To say that Cold War Veterans did nothing while in service is outrageous. While serving during the Cold War, I witnessed the deaths of two of my Brothers-In-Arms when a fast rope exercise went wrong. I spent over 14 hours searching the wreckage of a HELODET that crashed during Sonar Operations: 4 Souls On-board; None Recovered. I think those that 'shout' the loudest against this bill are the "wannabe" service men & women. An oath was taken by all and that oath binds each of us - one to another. This public display of disrespect amongst Brothers & Sisters-In-Arms is shameful. It belittles the entire Active Duty and Veteran communities alike. Cold War Veterans staved off World War by taking the oath, wearing the nation's uniform and constantly training and maintaining battle readiness in anticipation of a war that "would end all wars." No, it did not happen, their service is why. Respect.

As a member of the Military Police Corps back in the 80's I left post almost everyday. A calmer time, yes, but still on any given day something could have happened. I am a cold war vet. I proudly served in the US Marine Corps during that time. Weather you served during this time or anytime after should not matter. What matters is that we “ALL” volunteered to serve. In peacetime or war, our mission was to defend this country against all foreign enemies. It does not matter what branch of the service we are all brother and sisters fighting for the same cause. This butting heads over a medal is ridiculous. However, what is more ridiculous is when I overheard a conversation between a vet and civilian talking about his chest full of medals. This person talked about how bad it was over there and he was glad to be back home. When the civilian asked what his MOS was, the vet replied, “I was a cook” station on a base. So how does a cook rate all these medals and never been out on patrol? What means a lot is the fact that I proudly served in the Corps, my oldest son, disable from the Corps, and my youngest son is proudly serving now. Is your sons?

I Was There

ribbons are of no real value. Just what real worth do they have? None. That means they are trash.

John Dough

B. If you are a vet, you too have every right to speak up. Just don't demean those that also served. None who served honorably deserve to be insulted, no matter their circumstances. Same old $hit just another day. All the do-nothing wannabe heroes cry and whine because they didn't get a medal.

Too bad.

They did nothing to warrant any recognition.

You can make up all the "statistics" you want but they are still lies.

For instance, you say 400,000 were exposed to various toxins, and 59% died due to exposure. Would you care to elaborate on the deaths of some 236,000 people and how that never came up?

And all those poor folks who died in training accidents - Did you bother to look at other periods in our history? I doubt it because you know your numbers would turn out to be meaningless in comparison.
