August 31, 2011, 12:45pm (report abuse)The bill would reinstate the Mexico City Policy banning funding for any foreign non-governmental organizations that may otherwise promote or perform abortions with non-U.S. government funding. As a public health professional working in Latin America on maternal health issues, I can attest to the negative impact this provision will have, as it has had in the past, on the life of women. Simply put, pregnancy termination is sometimes necessary to save the life of a woman. This blanket provision would prohibit ANY funding from going to a health system where a woman is offered these services- even if that particular procedure were funded by another entity.
