Some of you Vets don't seem to know what the hell you are talking about so get off the whole topic of "hand outs"!! This legislation is for full RECOGNITON of disability and medical care before the Dept. of Veterans Affairs agency. It's a formality. It's the same process used by Gulf War Veterans and Agent Orange Veterans of Vietnam Service. So get off the whole topic of "hand outs" because you are all confusing the dialogue here. Clearly this civilian guy is a mental illness case and on that note, you would do well to ignore him. In this VA system, you either are or are NOT recognized by the agency so without this Bill, you will NOT be. There is no such as "getting your issues addressed" and then also, "not getting a handout". So hijacking this discussion into Nowhere adds nothing to this discussion. Thanks.

One more thing everybody. This bill is not all about YOU! There is an established medical patient group of former FMC veterans who are tied to oxygen tanks in their homes. When you dump all over this Bill, you are slapping all of THEM in the face! Think about that.

This is just another of the long line of bills attempting to add more people to the VA welfare rolls.

What should really be happening is a cut of at least 25 percent in VA disability payments, a total end to any and all presumptive disability benefits, and a complete overhaul of the VA medical system. Far too many people are being provided medical treatment for non-service connected conditions. The only treatment the VA medical system should provide is for combat injuries, nothing else.

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER UNWARRANTED VETERAN WELFARE BILL!

I unfortunately was stationed at Ft. McClellan for 15 months back in 73 & 74. I now have finally found the answers to all my medical issues. I am voting FOR this and I would love to meet anybody face to face that wants to disagree with this. I have suffered for 38 years from this exposure, and the lousy VA has not provided me with any of the answers or TRUTH.

"I have suffered for 38 years from this exposure"

Nah. More likely your less than fastidious lifestyle. Sooner or later all those things you did, ingested, played with, etc. had to come back and bite you.

It isn't up to the VA to provide you with answers or "TRUTH". It is up to DOD. Now if you want to whine go whine at them.

Just more whiney veteran welfare.

It takes a brave individual with absolutely NO COMMON SENSE to talk about other peoples lifestyle being the cause of their problems...You must be one of the many IDIOTS that the VA has hired to pretend to be DR.s Stand up and show your true identity. Then you can talk to my son who happened to be born at Ft. McClellan with tons of medical problems. YOU are an ASS for even thinking that Vets are on a welfare program. You definitely have never served anyone but yourself...

Sue you have some great points. This bill is about a registry and putting together FACTS not assumptions of others. This is not a welfare program but a valid option for those out there to record the health impications of their service to our great country.

I don't see it as a welfare program. I certainly don't want anyhting but some answers. I think we are a very diverse group from many walks of life.

Hateful people will always exist and those are the ones who are usually abusive to anyone they come in contact with. Some of these are self prefessed law enforcement (above the law types)

I feel nothing but sorry for them because they are never happy with anything or anyone.

This registry would help so many people and help many understand why they have had health issues. It's not fun to be sick!

IT IS the right thing to do to vote YES and help people figure out whether their exposure may have played a role in why they are sick!

I was stationed at Fort McClellan in the 1980's and I support this bill. I think this registry is desperately needed and long overdue. I have health issue that started right after I was stationed there and many are in common with others that were stationed there. Most of my health issues are not found in any of my other family members or friends so heredity and environment doesn't seem to have played a part in my health outside of my time at Fort McClellan.

It's amazing how many people have posted rude remarks on this comment blog. I am very concerned at the lack of politeness in our society. There is a way to convey an unpleasant message and do it tactfully. Let's all try to get along and enjoy the ride. Life is so full of so many things, as Robert Louis Stevenson said, that we should be able to find some happiness in it (my words). We can at least not contribute to the unpleasantness. As a state employee and veterans' representative, I try to help the veterans who visit my office in every way legally, ethically and morally possible, and I have yet to see one leave without a smile on his/her face.

For " meh1422" ... "your probably some lazy hillbilly" Please note the following statistics from the WV Archives and History website, since West Virginians are often called "hillbillies" ... Many of us have served our country "honorably"...Please, do not say "Whine! Whine! Whine!" is one of us.

From the WV Archives and History website:

How Many West Virginians Served?

World War I (6 April 1917 - 11 November 1918 ...to 1 April 1920 for those who served in Russia): 58,053

World War II (7 December 1941 - 31 December 1946 ... to 25 July 1947 in some cases): 233,985

Korean Conflict (25 June 1950 - 31 January 1955): 112,000

Vietnam Era (5 August 1964 - 7 May 1975): 36,578

Gulf War (1 August 1990 -

11 April 1991): at least 12,000 (data is not available on the website for more recent "wars"/"conflicts")

The West Virginia Veterans Memorial honors more than 10,000 West Virginians who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the nation in twentieth century conflicts.

For "Whine!... I had my college degree before enlisting in '79. I had OSUT at Ft. McClellan. My husband was there in '78. We met at FLW, married in '80. He is my "one and only". I have not smoked legal,or illegal, products. WV woman+Iowa man offered pretty broad "gene pool". He has been LEO for 30+ yrs. I am OLD(54)and health problems can/do increase as we age. I believe we have a right to know if some of these issues are related to our time in the Army. I believe the medical evidence will "speak for itself", if that is the case. I pray for "answers" for the many veterans suffering with severe health issues due to their honorable service to our country. I believe "guttersnipes" will continue to defame others so they can "feel better" about themselves. "...all great nations have honored, respected, and provided certain benefits for their veterans, realizing that had it not been for the sacrifices of the men and women who fought their battles, the Nations themselves would cease to exist."

Here is some information about my family..husband is LEO, son is Systems Admin/Systems Engineer, daughter is LEO, I have worked Social Work, Law Enforcement, Corrections, Security during 30+ years of my "work" life... I have never collected welfare / unemployment in my life .. I watched LOSER drug addict / alcoholic relatives (NOT veterans) get "government benefits".. I watched my handicapped mom die before being able to get any "disability" approved (she worked and paid into system for many years).. I have watched inmates get free college education/dental care/medical care ... while my son, who served in Iraq, had to get student loans to go to college (Army Reservist without benefit of GI Bill) ... Yes, there is plenty of waste in our govt spending...I hope veterans get MORE than our inmates/ corrupt foreign govts / "users and abusers" of society! "Vote Yes" to get medical evaluations/care for our great veterans who have health problems related to their SERVICE to our country.

I to have had many operations which are strange and do not know what life has for me, but to be a retired chemical specialist that was there at Fort McClellan I have hit many walls with the VA. For soldiers who gave there life up to serve their country we should not be going through this, we did not ask for these problems but those who have them Stand Strong! And be gland you were there for your country and hopefully those who serve us will come to their right minds and Supports us in doing the right thing. I don’t think they would like to see their families going thru the ropes as we do. I Thank everybody for their hard work on this bill and hopefully it will pass with flying colors so STAND STRONG and hope for the best. Thank you Steve a retired NBC NCO.

Hello to everyone, I was on the computer only trying to find an old friend who was stationed with me at Fort McClellan Alabama, We graduated March 11, 1987. Soon after I came home and graduated from the police academy. Soon after that I became very I'll, none of the doctors could figure out what was wrong with me until it almost took my life in 1995. I developed a rare bladder disease, the cause was unknown so there was no cure. I had to take a disability and leave behind all that I loved and had worked so hard for. Soon after I was diagnosed with endometriosis, IBS, Chronic Fatigue, Hyperglacemia and now hyperthyroidism. Was I exposed to chemicals, could I still be tested for exposure, and why was I never informed? I have always believed in doing the right thing, now it's up to our gov to do the same. Thank you for listening my heart goes put to everyone affected by this.

First of all you want to ask if maybe the problems that someone is having is from them ingesting substances in their youth. How about asking about the substances that were ingested with our knowledge? Seems only fair that is we werent told about these dangerous chemicals that we should have a right to medical treatment for the side affects. 2nd, just ignore the hater, when we respond back and argue with them the know they got us going and that is what they want they get a kick out of our reaction, so dont give them one.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. This bill is not about any of these things. What it is about is that those exposed unknowingly have the opportunity to understand that exposure.

Those of us that served our great country, volunteered to stand for those who may need us. Like our soldiers now, we all knew there were going to be risks when we volunteered.

Seems to me that this legislation is to help inform former soldiers that there might be a reason why you are sick.

Unlike those who never served, I am proud to have served my country and would do it again if asked.

Anniston, AL over the last 50 years is know as the most toxic area in the US. Monsanto is best known for producing the dioxin-containing defoliant Agent Orange. Monsanto produced the dioxin for decades at their plant in Anniston, Al located within several miles of Ft. McClellan and troops. The toxic levels tested in ground water, soil, and air were as high as 7,500 times allowed by Federal law. The water was diluted 300 times and tested by placing 25 fish in the diluted water. The fish according to The Washington Post, “All 25 fish lost equilibrium and turned on their sides in 10 seconds and all were dead in 3½ minutes.” Monsanto’s own internal memo’s made public during a 2002 law suit indicated that they were fully aware of the toxic effects and that they had dumped at a minimum of 1.5 million gallons of dioxin into the local waterways, countless millions of gallons into two uncapped landfills, and released it from damaged smokestacks into the air. I was stationed there from January 1984 to June 1984, I was diagnosed with Bi-lateral Testicular Cancer then considered to be terminal June 1988. After seven major surgeries, over one year in isolation at Walter Reed AMC, and massive amounts of experimental chemotherapy and radiation they found a cure. The down side is all the long term effects. I have polyneuropathy upper and lower extremities. I suffer from depression, fatigue, and anxiety. I have sores on my body that never heal. I had a massive heart attack at 42 years of age despite being a long distance runner. It was many chemicals used in the production of Agent Orange and many other chemical wartime agents dumped into the water, landfills, and burned into the air in and around Ft. McClellan that has made the citizens and us sick. The citizens of Anniston, AL sued the company Monsanto and won over 700 million dollars, the catch the military were excluded. One of the most important issues the I have found in regard to the Ft McClellan Health Registry Act is that hundreds of thousands of us have yet to be notified. Within the 2 days after I stumbled accross this information I found 8 others that I served with in the 80's that also have autoimmune diseaeses straight from this list. I'm not talking just one some have more than 5.

In order for everyone to at least get answers to the age old question of why is this happening, we deserve to be notified.

I agree Beth, the State of Alabama and the federal governement helped cover this mess up for over 40 years the documents are out there to prove this. Veterans continue to die. We must not suffer in silence any longer. write you congressman everyday and demand action and answers they work for us not the other way around.

I was at ft. McClellan in 1966, and remember being given blister gas on back of hand to show the effects of the gas to troops, blood gas nerve gas tear gas chamber was another place I remember going through , go in and remove your mask while intructor as k you question about you and home, and then running out door for air ,skin was on fire.also the fog generator we ran all day, flame thrower range. Now aim sick from all this,we were told nothing about long term effects of this, only they were our mother and dad,we obey them, we were trained in all germ war fare, but the long term effects of it. Back then the smart ones in charge didn't care, now the smart ones don't want to care about the ones before them.

At least these four have some intestinal fortitude. They have put forth cuts in veteran benefits to help offset the budget deficit.

Sen. Patty Murray, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairwoman

Sen. Richard Burr, the Senate’s committee’s ranking Republican

Rep. Jeff Miller, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman

Rep. Bob Filner, the House committee’s ranking Democrat.

It's time veterans stood up and helped reduce the deficit instead of constantly whining for more.

Well it is a long story going back more than 90 years (1927). A lot of cover ups by the state and federal government and local and federal EPA’s. In the end that was the deal that was cut they were in and we were out. The funny part is that the VA considered suing the chemical manufactures and the back off for unknown reasons. The area is now part of the superfund and the are in charge of the clean up of the area. The bottom line is we made the mistake of enlisting and being stationed their, so it is our fault? I have done my homework and it is amazing what a big government contractor can get away with it is borderline murder.

I think you should re-check your sources Sen. Patty Murray vowed to fight Rep. Jeff Miller over proposed Veterans benefit cuts. Here is the link your just another Australopithecus Afarensis:

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2011/01/31/dueling-congressional-va-comm-chairs-murray-and-miller-disagree-on-vet-benefits/

I don't think that a single Veteran had anything to do with increasing the deficit. I believe that was done while we were off fighting for your freedom. I think we need a law that requires every US citizen to spend four years in service to the country then I would not have to listen to morons like you. Take care yourself Lucy.

Senator Murray led the charge on this one. And, by the way, she is chair of the super-committee for coming up with the budget cuts. Sounds to me like she has her sights set on some of that fatcat veteran welfare.

At least these four have some intestinal fortitude. They have put forth cuts in veteran benefits to help offset the budget deficit.

Sen. Richard Burr, the Senate committee’s ranking Republican

Just another politician that will do and say anything to get re-elected. Go ahead and follow blindly the people that are responsible for the deficit, the people that will not take responsibility for anything that they have done. The Veterans and elderly are easy targets. You should just do the world a favor and me and just say thank you for your freedom. Your welcome.
