We need term limits. That would end the years of grudges carried by career politicians. Perhaps we could actually find some "statesmen" that would work for America.

How in the world are we supposed to make any sense out of something like this when you have to go everywhere else and log in to see something. Just like the typical politicians, keep everyone in the dark till we pass the bill so they can not register objection to anything we do until it is too late. Please plain and simple what is the percentage c.o.l.a. are we supposed to get?.

won't really matter you know every time we get an increase it's eaten up by higher prices on everything. All it seems to do is put us further behind

Whatever I get at least will help with the outrageous gas prices that our government seems to want those high prices to pay for a war. This is only my opinion, but the gas prices wouldn't be where they are today if we wouldn't have stuck our noses in the Middle East. We are paying through the high gas prices to the Middle East for the damages we are causing them.

I guess it's the thought that counts?

This is what we have lived with all along and resulted in a zero ($0.00) increase since the COLA calculation of 2008 (went into effect for 2009.) The same COLA that allowed Congress to enact for all federal branches an increase. Again for 2010 and 2011 (oh yea, Congress decided all those millionaires [congressmen, justices, president, et al.] should bite the bullet and forgo an increase for those years--not 2009. A real sacrifice.)

Meanwhile, because the government in their compassion decided several years ago to exclude the cost of energy and food from the COLA calculation, we live on a three year old income, which was insufficient three years ago.

How about raising the base amount for veterans' disability benefits first, and then mandating a minimum annual COLA increase? Same goes for SS recipients.

@RetdNavy

May 24, 2011, 2:26am (report abuse)

Actually, if you had bothered to look at the BLS calculations for the CPI-W, you would see that both energy and food costs ARE INCLUDED in the cost-of-living calculations. But then again that would require that you have the ability to read and comprehend. Not something you appear capable of doing.

Just to make it easier for your dumb a$$, here's the BLS page that shows just how the CPI-W is calculated. IF you can read, scroll down and look at the categories. IF you can read you will see food listed and energy, in more than one category, listed.

About being a Bible

Thumper,Shirley Jones and others

need to know that christ died for our sins, and when our lives are turned to god we live for him. Money comes from god in the first place, and god will supply our needs. The reason Shirley Jones does not want the veterans and ss to get a raise is because she wants to attend obamas birthday party in aug that he is wanting to raise for the 2012 relection, where she can smoke, dance, and drank her boose with him and others. Michelle his wife might catch her and give shirley Jones a beating, that she would never forget. Never forget that god is in control at all times and he could come when she is on the dance floor .

Being a veteran gives none of us special status.

I am a veteran but I am first a citizen of the United States of America. My status as a veteran is far down the list when I define who I am.

The idea that we deserve to be treated as special because we served is ludicrous. Is that same special status afforded to those who place their lives on the line everyday, such as police and firefighters? Certainly not.

Here in my little valley of calm and quiet there are hundreds of veterans. Very few of us ever talk about it and even fewer ever make any loud noises about how we are "owed" by the rest of the citizenry.

For all of you who claim to be better than the rest because you wore the uniform I say SHAME ON YOU! You bring discredit on the rest of us.

I get over $6000 every month. And a lot of that comes from the VA and is tax free. I'll bet there are a lot of folks out there who get a lot less every month.

Like I said - keep sending me those checks. And I'll take every raise you want to give me. Looks like we will get 3 or 4 percent this year. Love it.

At least these four have some intestinal fortitude. They have put forth cuts in veteran benefits to help offset the budget deficit.

Sen. Patty Murray, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairwoman

Sen. Richard Burr, the Senate’s committee’s ranking Republican

Rep. Jeff Miller, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman

Rep. Bob Filner, the House committee’s ranking Democrat.

It's time veterans stood up and helped reduce the deficit instead of constantly whining for more.

For any one who thinks disabled veterans should put more into reducing the deficit and quit the whining. Remember if it wasn't for us fighting wars that we didn't start but was just doing our jobs we paid the ultimate sacrifice for the others who would rather talk than DO. We have earned our pay and it was in our contracts that the government fix what they broke in us and compensate for the continuing daily difficulties we endure. I didn't ask to ruin me knees, fracture my back in three places, or tear the tendons and ligaments in my shoulder at the age of 22, but I did the job that others weren't willing to do. So if it's 3.6% we get this year we will take it and be grateful....and those who want to cut veterans benefits need to go on the front line and see what we see for the rest of our lives every night as we TRY to sleep.

@StopAbuse: I may not have been on the front lines, but, being disabled because of what I endured prior to being in the 1st Gulf War, which subsequently had me leaving the service instead of making it a career like I wanted, doesn't mean I'm ABUSING my Veteran's Benefits! Be careful my friend....some of us aren't always what we're labelled, but most of us are NOT abusers either.

VA disability is nothing more than a type of government "worker's compensation". Who of you if you should become disabled while helping your employer make a profit would refuse or feel bad about utilizing your employer's worker's compensation insurance benefits. Very many US and foreign companies make billions of dollars off of our wars and conflicts. People get injured when doing dangerous jobs. If our country's managers did not budget for these expenses in doing the business of war then change managers, don't get angry at the injured employees. I was drafted and draw 100% service connected disability plus my social security. I had to held companies make a profit while being paid less than 400 per month with my hazardous duty pay included while my wife and baby were paid less than 200 dollars per month to eat and pay rent and utilities. Many folks are still living high off the profits that Viet Nam generated. LIKE DESERTER Bush & draft dodging Cheney. They can't pay me enough!

All you get from veterans is "GIMME GIMME GIMME"!

Start out by immediately cutting the veteran compensation payment levels by 25 percent. There is way too much money being thrown down that rat hole. Too many scammers trying to steal from the system.

Then go back and repeal the last 5 years of added conditions attributed to agent orange. This is an unnecessary drain on the economy. I'm not sure anyone even knows how much money is poured into that hog trough every year.

Finally repeal all concurrent receipt. If you get VA compensation you should give up your retirement.

It is far beyond time to put a stop to all this and cut the veteran welfare programs back to more reasonable levels.

My old one looks kinda shabby next to that new boat. So all of you get hold of your senators and congressfolk and tell them to pass this bill most ricky-tick.

The hypocrites out there don't think I should be saying this but I believe in telling it just like it is. If I get a raise in my military retirement and my VA check I am going to buy a new truck. And the way I will get that raise is from you taxpayers.

Just because some don't want those paying the bill to know what is going on doesn't mean they don't deserve to know.
