February 6, 2009, 9:30am (report abuse)On Feb. 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) will go into effect. While the DTV transition was allotted years and there were federal funds to facilitate the transition, CPSIA was implemented in just 6 months, with the costs having to be sucked up by small businesses that produce children's goods.
CPSIA was supposed to protect children from exposure to lead and phthalates, but it went too far and will actually destroy the children's product industry, thrift stores, public libraries, daycares, and anywhere things for children can be found. If times were good, maybe we could cope with that. If the deadlines were longer, maybe we could readjust. But to do this suddenly, in the middle of a recession, will punch our already-down economy in the gut. To avoid this, we must make some amendments to CPSIA. The least we can do is extend the deadlines to buy us more time.

February 27, 2009, 2:42am (report abuse)I think that this ban goes to far! It bans things like motorcycles and ATVs from our youth. This kills small business and jobs that the motorcycles companies provides and family values that the riding community have! It's also is now a concern for more theft and it would just be for parts. How sad that goverment would take from our kids and our communtiy!
