Great! Now we have something to follow in the Senate. Hopefully this one won't be such a nightmare...

So I would hope that we could do that next week. But that's — we're all in conversation about what is possible. At the very least, I think we would have some kind — we have to have our unemployment insurance — extension of unemployment, extension of COBRA, food stamps administrative costs, and safety net piece, and then possibly a jobs piece.

Both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate are working on legislation to fix the glitch. Senate Bill 2831 would push back the deadline until December 31, 2010, while House Resolution 4183 would extend it to March 31, 2011.

However, Congress adjourns for the year on December 18th and must act before then.

"If, for whatever reason, this doens't get passed by the 31st, say...they don't... Congress doesn't get it passed, the President doesn't sign it until... January or February, then all of it would be retroactive, and we would implement it so that nobody would lose any of those weeks" explained Roy Mulvaney, with the Administrator for the Unemployment Insurance Division in Helena.

This is true since the law is now acted they have to pay retro if they don't get this fixed by Dec 31

One good thing anyway.

The Congress gives with one hand and takes back with the other, the glitch should never have been there in the first place is members of the House and Senate (who held the whole bill up) could count. The 10%+ of us on a lifeline wonder how they got there jobs!

We won't convey any false hope. If you don't fight for it, you won't get it.

START DEMANDING!!! We need Long-Haul Life-Line Legislation!!!

We've got to stop asking, hoping and whining. START DEMANDING!!!

Separating the issues (EUC Program extension -vs- New Tiers/Weeks) does nothing but play into partisan politics, allowing an empty victory and an out for Dems to return to Health Care Insurance Reform.

They've satisfied maybe 2 - 4 million unemployed whose only argument was,- "they got all the Tiers, why shouldn't we?".

This is the kind of logic that allowed the politicians to take the back door into the alley leaving 15 - 18 million waiting at the front door begging for scraps, again.

Why did we let Washington split us up with such a childish excuse?

We have weak leadership, that's why.

UnemployedInFL

(logged-in user) March 5, 2010, 4:03am (report abuse)

The 2 - 4 million unemployed actually got the Tiers because the economy is still in the crapper. And the people it benefitted didn't even understand what was happening. Let's not forget that.

It will take these 2 - 4 million along time to catch up to the wealth of knowledge us 15 - 18 million unemployed have accrued during our previous battles with these politicians.

15 - 18 million unemployed did not get any Tiers. Why not? Aren't we in the same economy? Let's not forget that either.

Are we discriminating between different types of Unemployed people now? The ones who got all the Tiers and the ones who didn't.

If your unemployed because the bankers, corporations, wall street and politicians don't know how to keep our economy strong then you should be getting a Life-Line Check. They've been calling them unemployment checks but let's face it this is way beyond the scope of your neighborhood unemployment agency.

UnemployedInFL

(logged-in user) March 5, 2010, 4:04am (report abuse)

If they don't want to give us a check to pacify us, then for God's sake let's take our country back. It's ours not theirs. They can run it as long as they don't screw us. Well they've been screwing us!!!

Congress is not going to tell us face-to-face,- that's all you're getting!!!

They absolutely know there'd be riots in the streets and modern political entities forming and fighting for territory. Are you going to wait and give them more time to build prisons and riot squads with stimulus money. They know the day is coming. Don't you?

They've chopped up a section of unrepresented Unemployed people and disposed of them by the millions.

These unrepresented Unemployed people are people we don't here from anymore. They're broke! They're living in a car, if they're lucky. They're the new faces begging on the street corner. They're the ones who no longer have their laptops and internet or phones to keep fighting for more Tiers. They're destitute. They're you, in time.

UnemployedInFL

(logged-in user) March 5, 2010, 4:04am (report abuse)

Some have outlasted most because they're single, no kids and live cheap.

If your not in this fight for some kind of Life-Line Check legislation, then you may as well stand in the next line waiting at the front door begging for scraps.

These Life-Line payments need to be paid to all who were unemployed thru no fault of their own until the Total Unemployment Rate gets back down to a predetermined level, say 5%.

The legislation should include avenues for training, recurrent training, OJT and self-employment programs, etc., to help us get ourselves back to work.

This economy isn't expected to change significantly until 2013. Ask any reputable economist.

We need Long-Haul Life-Line Legislation!!!

I just don't know what we are going to do. No jobs. No unemployment benefits left for our family. We are going to lose our home. Already have to file bankruptcy. How can this happen? This is supposed to be America. :( I don't know if I want to cry, give up or just plain hide.

How can this happen to so many of us? After two years with no job secured... it feels as if nothing will get better. Never thought we would end up homeless. :(

The only reason I can see Congress justifying not adding additional benefit weeks is that they assume we are not actively seeking employment. If people are receiving benefits without conducting an ongoing search for employement then would that not be a failure on the part of GOVERNMENT not the unemployed individual??.I say this because each state's department of employment services receiving federal funding to pay UI benefits is "REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW TO VERIFY THAT INDIVIDUALS RECEIVING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ARE ACTIVELY SEARCHING FOR EMPLOYMENT BY CONDUCTING ELIGIBILITY REVIEWS WHEREAS THE CLAIMANT HAS TO PROVIDE PROOF OF APPLICATION INFORMATION AND THAT NO REASONABLE OFFER FOR EMPLOYMENT WAS REFUSED". If both state and federal are doing their job then there should be NO question whether or not benefit recipients are, as some Legislators (Repubs) suggested,

"loafing lazy hobos" who will only seek jobs when their "entitlemant" is exhausted! Tell us, who are the loafers here????

I have been laid off since October 2008. I have to bachelor degrees and still cannot find work. I have moved twice since becoming unemployed to find a job. This situation is frustrating; the only way I have been able to pay my bills while looking for a job was with my unemployment benefits. My benefits are now exhausted and I still do not have a job. What is Congress gonna do to help us out. I much rather have a job and earn my money than to keep begging for benefits. When is Congress gonna help us out.

YES, we do need a tier 5, can't find work! Need to pay bills! The politicians that don't want to extend unemployment benefits don't care! They sleep well, pay their bills on their six figure incomes! we're not asking for much! Talking about job creation for unemployed, did you notice politicians never talk about all of our jobs that were sent out of the country! Maybe if these jobs were brought back, almost all people would be working!

WNV UPDATE:

Unemployment Extension | Tier V Questionable Before Break

The House Ways and Means Committee still has time to find some $27 billion to extend the existing EUC programs out until the end of the year however, that will only handle a relatively small percentage of both the unemployed and underemployed. In fact, the program may see even quicker closer since; estimations have enough people exhausting unemployment benefits under all programs by the end of July, to falsely lower that percentage utilized to trigger the unemployment extension program below levels thusly, cutting millions more from the program.

On April 15, 2010, President Obama signed H.R. 4851, the House version of the UI benefits extension. If the Senate version had become law, the Tier benefits would have been much better. We need to go to work on our Senators and Congressmen and tell them to support S. 2831 by Senator Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island). For example, S. 2831 allows part-time workers to keep their EUC Tier benefits, while the House version does not. See http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0329/Is-any-work-better-than-no-work-Not-for-unemployment-benefits
