Yet Another Opportunity for Foul-Mouthed Rants!

Another bill to extend unemployment benefits was introduced yesterday. The text of the bill isn’t available yet, so I can’t tell you how long it would extend them for. The bill is H.R. 3756. What’s this about foul-mouthed rants? The ...

This bill is better than HR 3404 since the 3 month average is 8.5% instead of 9%. I think they should give it to all states, though, or at a bare minimum stick with the 8% EB rule.

Write your Senators everyday...or better yet...call their offices. Also remember to goggle HR3404,s1647,HR155,S155 and HR3149 everyday...it's a numbers game but they do track the number of hit's on goggle. Do your part...don't be ashamed...be strong and diligent...we deserve all the help we can get.

Stop whining and go out and get a job. You may have to take something you think is "beneath your station" but there is work to be had. Then you can stop living off me and the other taxpayers who are working hard just to stay above water.

I can understand your view on unemployment and there have certainly been abuses in the past. And at the same time, things have changed a great deal the past 18 months and "regular" hard working solid families who have always been careful with their money and budgeted well, driving 10 year old cars, with no fancy toys, are out of work through no fault of their own. Perhaps consider compassion and be grateful for the job you have.

This Senate BILL S.1647 is a much better bill than HR 3404 introduced in the Congress. I didn't see the bill on the schedule for tomorrow when Congress returns, so we have to monitor both Houses to see which bill will be brought up BUT I hope it is the bill in the Senate because my state of California is 12% and ALL the double-digit states should receive a few more weeks. It BAD all over but those double-digit states have a double whammy. What happen to the promises with the Stimulus package creating millions of JOBS?.

This bill is on the Senate Finance Committee's schedule for 9/15. HR3404 is in 2 committees in Congress and hasn't been scheduled yet in either one. Hopefully the Finance committee will approve it (or whatever they do) and then the Senate will pass it quickly after. Then we just need the House to go along with it and pass it.

From what I have read a lot of you haven't walked in our shoes YET your day could be coming..My husband worked the same job for 13 years. When the plant he worked at shut down there was a 6 week notice. I can remember being so frightened. He quickly found another job 2 months after he started he was AGAIN laid off. another WV manufacturing plant closed. He has searched very hard for employment. There are no jobs and if you want to call unemployment a handout go ahead. I want to think of it as God watching out for his children that are in need. My husbands unemployment will be running out soon I pray for another extension. NOT so he can sit at home and be lazy. So our children can have a home with utilities and food on the table. For all that are walking in our shoes all we can do is hope that the economy gets better soon and our government and God keep us going until the jobs come back. For all that want to look down on us maybe you should stop looking down and offer us some help up!!!

An unemployed is an unemployed no matter from which state he/she resides. The qualifier to be one from the state with 8.5% unemployment rate is an unfair one.The cutoff 8.5% is a questionable basis. The way the state unemployment rate is arrived is based on outdated methodology. To be blunt it is a statistical lie. In states where the unemployment rate fell below 8.5%, the unemployment rate amongst African americans, Hispanics and other colored minorities except Asians is alreaqdy in 2 digits and in some states it is increasing. If someone takes the age group, the young and the aged are already in two digits unemployment rate in many states. For the senators and congressmen passing this bill benefits may serve some partisan constituency interest but not going to help ALL unemployed living in ALL states. They lack national perspective. We need extension of benefits to ALL hard hit unemployeds. Please dump the cutoff qualifier 8.5% from the bill.

ok....I have two degrees and have applied at Mcdonalds. I have NEVER collected unemployment...until now..I have always carried two or three jobs. My husband who has always worked, also hasn't a job. We have both applied to even pick up garbage (NO JOBS) so...to the person whom says get a job~when we all start losing our houses (maybe a second bailout to the banks which is far more expensive) or maybe your job will be next~ irrelevant...just makes a person VERY angry when both my husband and myself WANT to work, are WILLING to work...but there is NO WORK? Get a clue guy..because hey if that unemployment check were strapped to bedpans that I would empty thousands a day...I would do it for my family and to keep us off the streets...or stick it to vomit~I JUST WANT TO WORK~

SANDE~WI

Another thing to be said~ why are we still buying foreign? and forcing our economy to be worse..shouldn't we be buying items US (at least mostly) made? support the local mom/pops?

when my hubby got laid off the very first time it was because his job was outsourced to china where the company got a tax break to do..blame the downfall there..then blame the high gas prices which sunk us further..then hubby went to school to get a degree..found a decent job with decent benefits, then got laid off.(I had figured out that if everyone that worked there took a 10perc paycut that all the workers could have stayed a year)maybe a higher unempl tax rate to co that unemploy?

they are sinking an awful lot of money into education for people to not have jobs after.

Why not give each county a certain amount of money to hire people to pick up trash? I would be out there every day! getting paid? money would start flowing they did it with the Hoover Dam? why not now? or attach to UI for indefinite time.

USA has 50 states. Offering extension to only 25 states is unfair and divisive. In the states below 8.5 % , UE rate in the manufacturing sector is over 15% . The unemployment ther amongst African American, Hispanics and other colored people are over 10% and in some states as high as 17%. The disadvantageous young and the old workers are already in the double digit in most states. In states the unemployent fell below 8.5% the number of people actively looking for work due to withdrawal decreased the unemployment rate percentage. The cutoff qualifier of 8.5% is unfair, based on questionable data and methodology and needs correction before passing the bill. While the national un-employment rate is increasing, the economists are predicting the jobless recovery for unforesdeeable future, even the retraining is not a best option at this time for the changing marketplace, it is prudent to dumpt the 8.5% cutoff qualifier from the bill before passing.AMEND THE BILL DUMP 8.5% cuttoff.

I am in a double digit state and if I happened to be in one that was below the 8.5 percent, I don't know what I would do. I think that is incredibly unfair. The figures are not representative of what is truly going on. Having offshored a lot of our work and having written HB1 and HB3 work permits to thousands and thousands of people who took American jobs, the government owes us more than just unemployment conpensation. I was a high-tech worker who lost out to off-shoring. I helped to train my replacements. I have two four year degress and a Masters degree and I can wipe myself with them right now.

Regarding only 9.5% states

September 23, 2009, 4:33pm (report abuse)

It does seem very unfair but hear me out, unemployment extensions have always went by percentage. In this case hr3548 will be funded by extending an employer fee of $14 per year, per worker by 24months, and also by forcing employers to report new hires to avoid overpayments. The bill will not add to the deficit. At this time if your state is under the cut off and your over 6% your state should create it's own extension. Contact your governor, if enough people in your state do you will get the extension. If enough people don't than... well trust me if there are no jobs enough people will! Hr 3548 required alot of calls from the really high unemployment states to get where it's at. But right now if anything we need to increase the state deficit in place of the 2 trillion federal. Get a hold of your state your governor will respond!!

AD

September 23, 2009, 5:25pm (report abuse)

We do need extensions but what we need much more are jobs. We need jobs with living wages. We need jobs created here on our shores. We need an end to the H1b and H3b visas. We need to bring the jobs back to America. We need fishing poles, not fish.

Dump this flawed 8.5 % Cuttoff qualifier

September 23, 2009, 9:52pm (report abuse)

It is divisive, discriminative and will benefit only 27 states and not all of USA. Ask your senator to dump the below 8.5 % cutoff qualifier. Hungry is hungry, no matter where one lives and sleeps.

Please prevail upon such irresponsible, insensitive politicians who favor benefits to one section of Americans and ignore/deny the same benefit to others who live in simillar situation. Please make sure that they don't control Washington, no matter what political party they are affiliated to.

To: ... 3 dot person,

You must be under undereducated. People who have worked for 10+ years pay into unemployment. So yes I think that they deserve it because they have paid into it!

Most people retire without ever touching their UC benefits atleast people actually get to use WHAT THEY ARE PAYING INTO!!!

I do not think that you are stupid I think that you really havn't walked out into the "real world" lately. You have probably have had everything handed to you. Your dad gave you a job. You probably still live with your dad. Eveyone has the right to their opinion, I just wish these people would have ignored you and not have fed into you B.S.

You go fill out a couple apps just to see what happens. If you have a phone call a couple companies and and see if they're hiring.

If us Americans are so lazy then why did this not happen sooner?

You seriously needs some higher education also you might want to make sure that your paying into unemployment if not HA HA to you.

...

September 25, 2009, 2:11am (report abuse)

Misty,

Speaking of needing some education, you obviously have no concept of how the unemployment compensation is funded. You , as an employee, do not pay anything into the fund. Your employer does that, paying into a STATE fund. This legislation is for FEDERAL dollars to extend your payments, so you can lay around on your couch all day.

So before you pop off again and show even more of your obvious ignorance, perhaps you should get off your lazy a$$ and find out how things work.

... says, Stop whining and go out and get a job. You may have to take something you think is "beneath your station" but there is work to be had. Then you can stop living off me and the other taxpayers who are working hard just to stay above water.

We are and never was your employee, therefore we are not living off you or any other regular working taxpayer. I am living off of my old employer and if they wouldn't have laid me off then I would have to.

So you actually are arguing with your own post that is soo contradicting! Ha. Ha. Good Job now you have found out how things work. Ha Ha. That was a good 1 huh!

You think your so much smarter than congress why dont you join and teach them everything. They know with the most basic of common sense there can be some lazy people collecting unemployment. But unlike you they have half a brain and know the simple fact of there being 6 applicants for every job available. THE HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE SINCE UNEMPLOYMENT BEGAIN. Let me guess your still confused.

I can not beleive people would not support this extension. By doing so they are helping others keep their homes, eat and put gas in the car in order to continue their work search. Would you rather see these familys loose their homes, living on the streets, their childern not able to attend school, eating out of garbage cans? These people are your neighbors, your friends, your family. They are not some group of useless people asking for a hand out. For those of you lucky enough to be working keep your head up as you may at any time find yourself out of work. What will you do? Try finding a job at age 55, even a minimum wage job, even those jobs are not there for you at this time. Do you think someone who has worked all of their life enjoyes being on unemployment benefits? Come on people, lets pull together on this issue.

i hope this bill goes through committee to the floor soon. I hope they can have passage happen in the next 2-3 weeks and not take months so more people are dealing with loss of homes and poverty. As many people have run out of their extensions in CA. Jobless rate is 12.2% and doesn't include those who have exhausted unemployment. There are 22 states with high rates of unemployment... over 8.5% and the further extension of 13 weeks would help, I wish the senate would make it 20...

It is taking time for the job market to show recovery, even if companies are doing better they are not hiring.. and state and city jobs are on hold because of drastic budget cuts..
