August 11, 2009, 1:59pm (report abuse)This bill is an absolute must for the people of North Carolina.
Closing a beach on an Island is insane. ANyone who can say with a straight face that they didn't think there would be any impact on an Island economy or the people's way of life from closing the beaches, must be willfully ignorant.
Pass S1557 and reopen Beaches

August 14, 2009, 5:04pm (report abuse)The shoreline preservation principles that are in place are working to restore the critical species that are endangered.
The recession has caused a downturn in tourists this year - 4-5 dollar a gallon gas was to blame last year.

September 29, 2009, 1:48pm (report abuse)Considering tourism on the OBX has increased during the closures each of the two years the consent decree has been in place, I'd say you're the one who is willfully ignorant, Ryan.
I repeat, even in the midst of a national recession and $4/ gallon gas, tourism is still up on the OBX. You can find that stuff here: http://nature.nps.gov/stats/park.cfm?parkid=171
The only people complaining about it are out of towners who visit one weekend a year and business owners who had made a decision to spurn the business of those who don't agree with them. Frankly, I have a hard time feeling sympathy for either.
The consent decree is working, there's no reason to abandon it because a minority of beach users oppose it.

October 23, 2009, 5:16pm (report abuse)I just returned from a trip down to see friends who are both businessman and residents of Hatteras. To see the number of businesses that have closed up just in the last year shocks me. One business I know had been in existence since 1982. Yes, you can probably blame the economy and the rising gas prices but I think it has to do with the beach access restictions that have been imposed. The survival of this area greatly depends on keeping the beaches open to public access.
