Ok, anyone know. I worked Jan and one week in Feb of 2008. I started to collect right away. I was on a severance package for 10 weeks so collected that too (I was told it was ok to do so) does anyone know if that will show and count that I worked? I was paid on a regular payroll. I got my severance from Feb-May of 08.

I'm astounded... the bill on firearms, and another on safe transport of horses, both get 200+ responses. Taxing unemployed people to death gets less than 90. Come ON!, people...where's the outrage? Email the Whitehouse, your Congressmen & women, speak up already! No one else (evidently) is gonna do it for us.

Sure did love us when we were working for some faithful 42 years now 60 and lost my job because of the economy- lots of good experience and no place to go- real estate in any working environment is a no winner in Florida- could use a little extra help - can't get a loan to pay taxes - unemployed - credit card is a killer - will still be paying that back next year when taxes due again - but to my benefit - love roman noodles - help

Guys,This all started way back, when people started buying Toyota\'s,Nissans, Hyundai\'s and Volkswagen\'s,rather than buying American cars! And I\'ll bet ALOT of you still shop at Wal-Mart,did you realize you were supporting China and Tai-Wan,NOT America? I\'ve seen it,time after time, when a Wal-Mart comes to a town, most of the small businesses have to close down , because they can\'t compete with Wal-mart. I personally feel that Obama has that right,It\'s time we started to buy AMERICAN!!

The latest news in regard to this is that they are planning to only allow the first $2,400.00 of unemployment insurance to be suspended for the year 2009, for each person collecting unemployment insurance. The original suspension was for the total unemployment insurance incurred in 2008 & 2009. They are now of course cutting down the number doing little good for me. I collected $14,073.00 in Unemployment Insurance for 2008 & is still out of work in N.Y. Keep in mind this is for the Federal return & not the State. NY has the highest income taxes & even though I only made $36,000 last year, I still owe several hundred dollars to the State. It is crazy! I was hoping for a large Federal return so I can pay off the State but this obviously won't happen. By the time they approve of it; the amount the amount will go down below $2,400.00 for 2009 & will not include 2008. That would be to their benefit because the government will save so much money not allowing us to include 2008. Horrible !!!

Thursday, Feb. 26th @ 10:00a.m. John Lewis (D-GA) chairs a House Ways and Means committee meeting on "IRS Assistance for Taxpayers Experiencing Economic Difficulties". Waving fees, penalties, and interest might be a "kind gesture", as many of us have no choice but to pay our tax bills on the IRS installment plan. More info on this meeting:

Taxing unemployment benefits is a slap in the face. Obama and McCain made campaign promises to do away with this ridiculous tax and be retro forr 2008. Are they liars??

February 26, 2009, 5:37pm (report abuse)

James,

Yes, typical politicians to say anything to get elected. When McCain said it; I did not believe him. When Obama said it; I did believe him.

You can blame Ronald Reagan, and the Democrats, for taxing unemployment benefits. They passed the Tax Reform act of 1984 (and revised act of 1986). They had to get revenue from somewhere when they reduced taxes on the wealthy.

By the way, when April comes around, and those unemployed think that they are exempt from paying income tax, and find out otherwise, there are going to a lot more angry people in this country. National unemployment will be above 8% by then. Watch for some fireworks!

kate

Why isn't this being talked about in the media? Why aren't Republicans (at the very least)jumping up & down in front of every news camera they can find, using this failed campaign promise against Obama? Where the hell is Michail Moore when you need him? Come April 15th, 6 million people (and counting) will find themselves living on "Mean" Street, instead of Main Street.

I have been laid off for over a year and unable to find a job. I had hoped Obama would keep his promise about suspending the tax on our unemployment for 2008 and 2009, but I fear we will be unable to rely on him for anything. After reading the comments on this website, I did as someone suggested and emailed all of the members of the Senate Finance Committee asking them to support S.155. I am 45 and this is the first time I have contacted anyone in our government. However, I believe the average American is going to have to get more involved and call our Senators and members of Congress and tell them what we expect from them. I had been a Democrat since I was 18 until this last election. I was so disgusted by the media worship and obvious bias for Obama, as well as the way they treated Clinton, McCain, and Palin, that both me and my husband went and changed our party to Republican. I am still planning on emailing the White House as well and urge everyone to do the same.

Section 2005 provides for a state to, at its option, permit certain individuals to qualify for EB in cases where there is no overlap between the individual’s benefit year and the EB period. Specifically, the state may permit individuals to qualify for EB when the individuals haveexhausted Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC08) during an EB period that began on or before the date the individual exhausted."

Another good reason to try to get your state to adopt the TUR trigger is you could get 20 weeks instead of 13.

The Obama-Biden Plan
Extend unemployment insurance benefits and temporarily suspend taxes on these benefits: Millions of Americans are looking for work but unable to find it in the weak economy. Today, more than one in five unemployed workers has been out of work for more than half a year -- the highest level since early 2005. Obama supported extending unemployment insurance this summer, but already 800,000 jobless workers have exhausted those benefits and are being left without any unemployment compensation. Obama and Biden believe Congress should immediately extend unemployment insurance for an additional 13 weeks to help families that are being hit hardest by this downturn. In addition, they believe we should temporarily suspend taxes on unemployment insurance benefits as a way of giving more relief to families.
FROM CHANGE.GOV
NOT the kind of change we counted on is it.

Where's the public outrage...????
Why isn't this in the news...????
Last I heard, 14.5 million people will suffer come April 15th, unless they chose to have taxes withheld from UC benefits. I did not because I just KNEW Obama would repeal that once he took office. Yes, he promised.
"Fool me once"...live and learn, I guess.
Even on the website called "Bail Out People Not Banks" the issue of taxation on unemployment benefits is NOT anywhere to be found. Why aren't the people who actually hate Obama and want him to fail screaming about this in front of every news camera available!!???? I just don't understand.

This is really ashame it did not pass, money now owed back for many americans including myself for '08 that I really do not have to pay back, and to make matters worse the extension has a loophole not factored in from the gov. being that the regular state money has to be used first for those whose anniversery date has expired and forcing those to refile brand new claim. In many cases including myself, I have extra money sitting there from both Tier 1 & tier 2 extension (Ohio) yet made just enough wk's/income to where now making $576 per/mth vs. $365. So in nutshell going back to work in way is penalizing those and the extension doesn't really do what it is intended to do as for covering all parameters.

Any advise in what to expect??

Is there anybody out there who collected a portion of the extension benefits last year and then went back to work and then was separated from employer and had to use different base pay period and benefit amount (due to 1 year anniversary date regulating new claim, thus not allowing the remainder of Tier 1 and/or Tier 2 to be continued where it was. I was told couple months ago that money still can be used once the new 24 week claim expires and if still unemployed.

Thanks so much for the link. It seems like not all states are out of the woods though, seems they have to approve it. From what I gather, that would be a maximum of 72 weeks for Illinois??? Im almost out of my 59 weeks 26 + 13 +7+13.

Reid Hyams

March 28, 2009, 6:49pm (report abuse)

My understanding of the extension is that in Illinois, provided that Governor Quinn approves and or changes the law to do this, a third tier of EUC will take effect. That means that you would get 26 + 13 + 13 + 6 = 59 EUC through tier #2. Then at tier #3, you would get an additional 13 weeks based on our current unemployment rate = 72 weeks. An additional 6 weeks can be added if our unemployment is over 8% for three months in a row, which we\'re close to right now (8.6% Feb. alone). That totals 78 weeks of UC, provided (1) that Quinn approves and (2) the rate exceeds 8%. Presently, IL is eligible for 72 weeks. I suggest you contact the Quinn, the senators and your house representative to approve this ASAP! IL is an Obama/Democratic State & I believe it will be approved, but you still need to act!

Reid Hyams

March 28, 2009, 7:05pm (report abuse)

BTW, keep in mind that the law may need to be amended in IL to get this 3rd tier + this money is from the Federal Govt. and does not have to be repaid by the state. Additionally, the only tax break is on the first $2,400 of UC benefits for the year 2009. There is Republican opposition in IL to pass the 3rd tier; Quinn, regardless of how bad Blago was, is not jumping to pass this! The absurdity of it all is we're bailing out banks in the 100's of billions, but the government is reluctant to give YOU a meal!!! Additionally, the states that refuse to take the tier #3 monies are killing their own people. Bottom line is there are no jobs and this recession is going into a depression... while all government is out to lunch!!! Face it, we have bad government and Obama is wimping out on his promises to the people! It's not only with the unemployment, but many other issues. I voted for him, because I believe and still do, that he is better than McCain... BUT THAT IS NOT ENOUGH! WHAT CHANGE?

dmw: It's very difficult to interpret all that is going on & perhaps 3RD tier may be incorrect terminology? But, an additional 13-20 weeks is available for extended unemployment benefits after all previous extensions run out provided the state you live in qualifies and your state government approves. That would presently max out at around 78/79 weeks of extended benefits. They are available and any state that does not take advantage of this federal government program, needs new government! Essentially, if your state does not and qualifies... it only shows that your governor and all, are simply playing games with peoples lives and doing this to spite Obama... when in fact, they're hurting YOU - the tax paying citizen who fell victim to a very poor economy. TAKE ACTION NOW! beauregard: I couldn't agree more "We're being screwed to death by this system" but, the system are those that are in office, regardless of party! It's time we face fact... Rather than put it on a credit card (just hiked to 14% int. for no good reason), or use IRS installment plan with all hidden penalties, fees and interest, I borrowed the money from my 80 yr. old mother living solely on Social Security. I think taxing unemployment is flat out crazy. I was about to lose my home when my mortgage payment kept rising First Franklin wouldn't work with me. Then I hired a firm www.proloanmods.com and I had to borrow their fee from my mom. 2 month's after that my mortgage is at a beautiful rate but then I got permanently laid off (I worked for circuit city) now my unemployment's taxed and I could really use that income I'm not saying it would pay my mortgage or anything but it would definitely help with the grocery bills and everything else while I go through this period of my life.

Why would the IUR be part of the 59? Those are already there for everyone...cmon people use your heads. The IUR triggered those of us who are at the end of the 2nd tier or the last of the 59 weeks for 13 extra weeks as long as we stay above the 5% IUR rate.

I agree with the last post - we should be receiving additional 13 weeks on top of 59 weeks (that's people who have already exhausted EB at the end of March or will exhaust their EB in mid-April). In addition, if we will have 8% or more unemployment rate for 3 mo in a row, there'll be an additional 7 weeks. So far, we're little below 8%.

No money here yet in Ohio adn imagine for some reason will still be few weeks before it gets rolling in. Thanks to good old taxes from unemp. in '08, I owe back $897 in total.

Does anyone know under what cicrumstances 'on hold' or repayment options exist for hardship situations. Heard something exists and it is separate from the 120 days and the installment payment program.

Wonderful! Because of my severance and unemployment benefits for 2008, I was socked with a combined income tax balance due of $4,000. And, still without a job.

Of all the promises to break, it just had to be this one. Thanks Washington, for using us in your indignation and in platitudes of speeches, but in our hour of need you just were not there for us.

My heart goes out for those families who are staring at ghastly income tax bills through no fault of their own. This is a double-blow to job loss, foreclosure, cut hours, you name it. It will stall any recovery, mark my words.

God help this economy.

well, bit the bullet and had to pay those taxes today, $262 to state and paid $335 out of $735 for federal, so imagine will definately get some letter in mail asking to arrange some type of payment plan over next month for $400 remaining balance, not good. Heard interest rate is 4 percent, anybody knows if that starts immediately from April 15th. Someone told me no penalty fee expected if owe less than $1,000.

well, just heard some potential good news, not sure if just rhetoric or not, don't think so, in that the IRS commissioner on CNN followed up from yesterdays national briefing explaining that IRS is willing and has ability to comprimise certain situations with people in possibly waiving balance dues if make partial payments and for those that live on bare necessities and lower incomes, thus not able to pay back total amount. I am praying that they will maybe just accept my $335 I mailed in out of the $735 being that I am living off of $576 per mth. from unemployment insurance.

IL was approved for Tier II EB (extended benefits). I know for a fact that workers in Illinois, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina, who are currently receiving 13 weeks of Extended Benefits, could receive an additional 7 weeks (for 20 weeks total) with the enactment of a TUR trigger. Do we need to take action now and contact our elected officials, or have you heard any news about the enactment of TUR trigger already?

Can't everyone see how important it is to give $4500 to employed people to purchase a new car than it is to keep stupid campaign promises to the unemployed of this country? Way to go PREZ! I'll be sure to vote for you again!

It is extremely hard to get hired as most companies in the hi-end luxury jewelry market are struggling and will hire before or after the holidays when the economy improves. They are laying people off, reducing hours and giving the people left the work of what used to be three people.I have sent out resumes and gone on many interviews and see the same companies offering the same jobs over the past year. Hopefully the new year will bring us to a better place and the cycle will be broken-Better service by better sales associates can only increase sales.

Write your congressman and senators and ask them to please support this bill. It's a great bill and should be passed. Taxing UC is about as stupid as having a screen door on a submarine. The bill would cover the years 2008 and 2009. Call or write TODAY

We need the ecconomy to be better stimulated.Hey senators, ever waited in a cheese line after working and paying taxes all your lives? didnt think so,oh yeah there Georgy Bushes fans. They do not care just like he didnt.Never again do I want to have to live like I did in the eighties, having my school funding taken away,by Reagan and my waitress tips taxed even though I only made $2.01 per hour. while trying to go to college. Why dont you go through hard times like that Fred then we will see who you call lazy!

Hey president Obama, I voted for you! I have always voted for the Democrats. I consider myself a D**** good Democrat. If you even want to get re-elected or go down in history as a great president please do not continue to do what Georie Bush did and just ignore the poor working Americans who are in need. Make AIG pay us back!!! with their 3.5 billion dollar profit and take the unemployment tax away. We are all counting on you. Your federal college funding is great and maybe after we can educate some of these children who think they are republicans, we can turn them into Democrats because they will see for themselves. They will be able to see the light, but come on do what you promised so they dont keep thinking that their parents know all, and while they cannot pay their mortgages, they are still Republicans. They will realize from their education they are in fact really Democrats!!!! Show them what we are about, the poor, middle class Americans, not the rich like Fred.

I've written my senator twice and congress representative requesting a status on this bill. The first email to my senator went out a couple of weeks ago. To date I have not heard from either.

Get it together my government employees. Time to work for the people! I've paid your salary for nearly 40 years and made a pittance compared to your salary.
