Extension of "Stimulus" Unemployment Provisions: Extends the nationalization of the extended benefit unemployment program through May 5, 2010. The bill would extend 100 percent federal funding for the U.I. extended benefits program, as well as an additional $25 per week for U.I. recipients. However, given that the bill would use entirely federal funds to extend unemployment benefits, some Members may echo the concerns of noted economist Martin Feldstein, who previously testified that extended unemployment would "create undesirable incentives for individuals to delay returning to work. That would lower earnings and total spending." According to CBO, a similar extension for the month of March, 2010, resulted in a cost $6.8 billion in direct spending and a loss of $1.1 billion in lost revenue.

My question is, what about those who are long term unemployed? are they going to be thrown to the wayside in all of this? The way I am reading this thing is that it will help only those applying for unemployment benefits, is that correct?

H.R.4851 does NOT address a new tier or extending weeks on tier IV, it only extends the filing cutoff dates of existing tiers. Nothing here for the long term unemployed that have no hope, and exhaust ALL unemployment benefits beginning Mar 31.

So... if this means there is no tier 5... then what are they going to do about the t5 people? is there talks of a t5 in the works in the senate for next week?

any thing at all about a t5 being mentioned at all in washington? or are they just ignoring it?

there are currently about 17,000 people in indiana that are going to be out of money all the sudded if there is no t5 and they only have 12 days to do something about it..

there is currently only 3 jobs listed in our classifieds and one of them is a stripper.

so..um... yeah... any news on T5????????

HR 4213 -- the Tax Extenders Act, which carries the amendments to extend the eligibility cut-offs for the EUC Tiers, the COBRA premium subsidy, and other benefits for the unemployed through year-end 2010 -- is stuck in the House. Debate continues there over the sources of funding.

Because of the delay on HR 4213, the House passed HR 4851, a separate bill that provides only a 30-day extension of these benefits (to May 5 for the EUC Tiers and other unemployment benefits, and to April 30 for the COBRA subsidy).

So we are still waiting for the House to pass extensions to year-end of the existing Tiers and the COBRA subsidy (HR 4213) -- and now we're also waiting for the Senate to pass the 30-day extension (HR 4851) to cover the gap created by the delay in the House.

No Tier V and no additional weeks for existing Tiers are stake in either of the two bills in play.

This will help those who still have Tiers left but it does nothing for those of us who have run out of Tier 4. Bill 4213/4851 are somewhat the same. Unless a bill is introduced that specifically adds Tiers for the remainder of the year then the rest of us are doomed. There isn't even any talk about another Tier. Washington is too damn busy BSing people about the healthcare bill that will do nothing to ensure good/better care for Seniors and on debating and spending money on a bill called Potty Parity which gives an equal amount of bathrooms for everybody who works in Federal buildings throughout the US. I have never heard anything so ridiculous in my life and they have the nerve to say unemployment is down and the economy is better. They must really think we are a bunch of dumb nitwits.

steelhorseiride

March 19, 2010, 2:26pm (report abuse)

There is NO talk in Washington about a Tier V or any other Tiers to take us thru the remainder of 2010. Pelosi was shooting her stupid mouth off this morning about hundreds of thousands of created jobs, etc. In your dreams Pelosi!! Also the Media and Washington are on a roll again about unemployment being lower and the economy being better. Unemployment is down and will go further down because all of us who are exhausting our Tier 4 will be on NO number rolls at all. We will be invisible and not counted because we are getting NOTHING from the government. Of course the numbers are missing. We are much more intelligent than they give us credit for. As for the guy on one of these sites said about flipping burgers?? A RAEL American can't even get one of those jobs because they are all taken by foreigners. I have experienced this, see it every day so he must be a foreigner flipping burgers which is the huge problem..too many foreigners taking our jobs and being allowed to by Washington.

ok... so im trying to understand this a little more..

i am currently on T4 with only 2.75 weeks left of this tier...

i have another 2000 in unemployment from an old claim that i was told by my unemployment office will roll over and i will be able to draw from that.

SO... does this 30 day extention to may 5 effect me at all? If i am on the end of tier 5 will i get a 30 day extention? i recieved the 2 week extention that was passed earlier but i am not sure who this new bill is affecting.

so will i get the 30 day extention? and/or will i get the extention to the end of the year if the extend the EUC threw the end of the year or how does that all work...

every website i go to it seems like everyone knows whats going on but no one knows how to explain it to someone like me who has no idea whats going on in washington and what is actually written in the bill. im just really confused

Maestro is right

March 19, 2010, 5:18pm (report abuse)

It is a filing cutoff. If you are on 3 or 4 whatever and you are running out after that date. You will not get an extension.

You have to have "been layed off" at a certain time to catch it.

All these people "bizzy whatever" who are running their mouth don't understand it.

I live in New Jersey and my Tier IV runs out March 31st. If they put the energy into unemployment that they put into this stupid health reform we might have a chance. We've worked hard all of our lives, why should we be penalized for no jobs being available? They need to extend the benefits at least until the end of 2010 with no exclusions. If you think the country is a mess now, if they don't extend it's going to be far worse.

Tier V

March 20, 2010, 10:29pm (report abuse)

There are people spreading rumors of talks about Tier V on these types of sites. They are just that.

At this stage in the benefits extension game you should have been playing the game as if there were not going to be new extensions by squeezing every dime, going to food pantries, and search for a job 60 or more hours a week like your life depended on it.

I am unemployed as well, but I have grown tired of people popping up here and elsewhere around the end of their benefits saying give me more. I've been demanding job creation from my representatives for nearly two years, and I'm one of the few.

I want to work. That is my calling card. Most unemployed seem to have "More Benefits" tattooed on their heads.

Do something for once and prove me wrong.

Our government has turned their backs on the long-term unemployed.

The government deceived the public when they signed HR4691. HR4691 only extended the deadlines for establishing eligibility for federal unemployment. It did not create any new or additional benefits for those who have already exhausted their benefits.

Our government spent the weekend working on the healthcare bill passed; regardless of the fact that 70% of the people do not want it. Yet they have completely thrown aside the plight of the unemployed.

If you are tired of being ignored by our government, please sign the two petitions below. Government needs to be aware the unemployed will not settle for being brushed under the rug any longer. HELP US GET OUR VOICES OUT, PLEASE SIGN EACH PETITION.

To BajundaDustin

If you have 2.75 weeks of tier IV left you would received your last check after 4/5. Under the current propasals I've heard of (extending another 30 days and until the end of the year) you would not be eligible for any further benefits. These proposals do not include a tier V or any additional weeks. All they would do as of now is extend the filling time for those who run out of benefits prior to those date who are on tiers 1, 2, 3. They would be able to move on to the next tier. I have read that there is discussion about adding a tier or expanding the weeks. I think they know they MUST do something. I have called and contacted every rep and senator in my state and also those of other states. I have even e-mailed the White House. Additionally, I have contacted different news medias because they need to focus on this. This is about all we can do. Unfortunately out fate in not in our hands. Call and e-mail everyone.

Now that Washington has screwed millions with their health bill when are they going to work on "Helping" the long term unemployed by adding more Tiers for the remainder of 2010? LOL. Everyone has to have health insurance now so what happens when we are still unemployed because of Washington and we can't afford to buy health insurance?? You will be fined for not having it. Does not make sense but then again it is all a political ploy in an election year.

This is true but the problem is if we as people don't try how will we know. The point is we can't complain if we don't try to do anything about it. That means pettition call the offices fax e-mail what ever it takes to get our point across. How can we sit back and do nothing if we don't try if we it's up to us to make them care if we call and complain and raise hell. especially to the media or who ever. To get heard then this is what we have to do. All I said is to sign the pettition.

Just in case you have not been watching the news Tom Coburn a Senator from Oklahoma is the person responcible for holding up the extension deadline for continued weeks of unemployment

why? why? why?

March 26, 2010, 8:47am (report abuse)

Ok lets give an extension to the short term unemployed and not for the long term makes alot of sense you think? the short term unemployed dont care because they have alot of weeks of benefits ahead of them. For us people who havent had a job and actually need these benefits are screwed and its been really tough for us lets just go live on the streets and that will make things better for the economy, wonderful government. this will not only happen to us but also the short term unemployed. why make any extensions at all. the long term have more a right to have there benefits other then the newcomers. why is there a selected category WHY!!!! im sure the short term unemployed have some sort of saving come on people what is this place we live in!!!!!!

I sure am glad they are taking spring break before helping anyone. That makes sense What other business takes a spring break? Yes the government is a business. Well we don't want them to be over worked from spending money in all the wrong places do we. They must really need some relaxation time in their beach houses to laugh about how much money they are making from lobbiests instead of helping the desperate.

So they need a break before a decision is made on unemployment??? Never mind that people in our country are worried about if they will be able to feed their children, while they are care free enjoying easter with their family. It is a shame that our country has came to this....who can trust our elected officials anymore.

Quite frankly, I am amazed, shocked, and unfortunately, not surprised, at our Congress. Take a "Spring Break"? Are you kidding? You are no longer in college...you represent the citizens of your (respective) states. Don't ignore any unemployed citizen!!! How can you morally walk away from your job - knowing that you are leaving hundreds of thousands of people without a way to make ends meet? Who do you think REALLY pays your salary? How would you feel if we fired you and did nothing to help you make ends meet until you found a new job? Hey folks, November is not far off, let them find out how it feels!

I am 61 years old - have worked full time since I was 21 and I run out of my unemployment benefits next week. I am desperatley hoping for a Tier 5 - and I am so insulted that anyone would suggest that adding an additional tier is

really encouraging people not to look for a job! I am a single homeowner. Without a job how can I survive? Unemployment compensation only keeps "the wolves from the door". It doesn't send me on a vacation or buy me filet mignon. Shame on our Congress for not "taking care of their own". Who voted you into office? Whose taxes pay your salaries? Not the people from other countries (no disprespect intended) and not the illegals.

I live in New Jersey and have been unemployed since February 2007. I too, am interested in a Tier 5 extension. I exhaust all my benefits as of March 31st and there are no jobs. I read this blog regularly and have taken some of the advice. I've made calls to our Congress people. The office of Representative Frank A. LoBiondo (R-02) returened my call the next day. The message was that everyone's benefits will be extended for 30 days regardless of what tier you are on. This legislation will be passed in the next several weeks. This will give Congress more time to add another extension.

I live in Texas and just went to www.thomas.gov it actually tells you which Senators voted "NAY" to the bill HR4851. Texas Senator, John Coryn voted Nay. I sent him an email which will probably do no good but I sent one anyway.

Do these Senators not see how this will affect the actual budget? I know I will increase it - I will have to apply for food stamps, medicaid, homeless shelter - any possible help I can get. They act like we are getting $10,000 a month and sitting at home laughing as our neighbors wake up and head off to work........by that point I have been up for hours trying to decide if I am paying the electricity bill or water bill, applied for 300 jobs and cried about how I am going to feed my kids.

So the question for the Oklahoma Senator about how it will be paid for should be answered by how much is it going to cost the government not to pass this bill?

I still do not understand what impact this will have on my UI benefits nothing is clear - good luck every1
