The Senator from Kentucky who blocked this from being voted on is hurting his party because there will be political backlash. People need this to pass last week so they can keep their unemployment benefits giving them more time to find a job, and giving the economic recovery more time to take hold. If 1.2 million people lose their unemployment the recovery is going to suffer immensely. It is ridiculous that one Senator can block a bill from being voted on. This is an emergency that needs to be taken care of now. Over a million families are waiting and worrying about if they will have a roof over their heads, food on the table, gas to look for a job, etc...

Congress fails to address "healthcare" by enacting permanent solutions to problems they have put temporary fixes to for many years. The Extension of Medicare Therapy Caps is just one example. This "restriction" and financial "cap" basically forces seniors to receive any needed physical or occupational therapy from a hospital therapy department once they have reached a $1860 limit with a private practice therapist. The "exception process", that basically negates the entire process has been added every year. Congress "still" chooses to add another temporary exception process rather than do away with the illogical, discriminatory and restrictive bill entirely as proposed in both the House and the Senate in January, 2009.

The biggest problem with jobs is they are being given to foreigners. I just spent time in GA and the 2 places I stayed are run by East Indians and Iraquis/Iranians. How they get these jobs when they can't even speak English is beyond me but then again I have had these same people tell me that the USA shows them preference when it comes to subsidies, education, jobs, etc. We already know that and it needs to stop. Close the flood gates and put REAL Americans back to work. STOP giving our living away. This is all Washington's fault and they should give us benefits until they stop these tactics and we tax paying Americans are back to work. Make it American, ALL American, ONLY American. No countries stepped up to the plate when Katrina ruined New Orleans, when tornadoes take out whole towns or when the Northridge Earthquake caused massive destruction but yet Washington jumps right on the band wagon and has IMMEDIATE money for every country who has a problem.

I am an unemployed mechanical designer I know what you mean. I have a problem with shipping my job overseas, I was a born here as were my great, great, great parents.

I must say this: This is the land of opportunity.

I do believe foreigners should not be given a preferential treatment, but equal opportunity.

Don't blame the foreigners, it is us whom we should blame for not voting in the right men.

our fault

March 1, 2010, 5:44am (report abuse)

we vote these people into office..

we want our stocks, 401k's to make the most money and that means a high bottom line figure... and to get that means cheap labor and costs. if we were not so greedy, that would not happen... get rich quick never worked... legally that is..you have to work for it and it takes time.

rather we ship jobs overseas or we actually even employ the illegals here to do work... takes away from a lot of jobs.

we are in alot of trouble folks, we didn't get here overnight.. this formula for distruction has been going on for some time now.. Spending more than we have, not making products here, and even hiring illegal immigrants to do our jobs... we are the problem..

Totally agree, 'our fault'. We've become a nation of "what's in it for me." Until everyone is willing to give up some of their entitlements (i.e., need to raise SS/Medicare retirement age; cut earmark spending on pet projects; cut govt pensions), we're doomed.

As one of the unemployed in this country I have a couple of things to think about.

1) Unemployment rates are based on those drawing unemployment benefits. - No benefits, rates drop - doesn't mean more jobs or more people working they just simply don't count anymore.

2) Many of us are hanging on by a thread hoping and praying for a job. No benefits - no home - no food - chance of gainful employment also decreases with homelessness.

3) homeless shelters already overflowing with homeless - leaves only the street (In my community it's illegal to sleep in your car.)

4) What have we done to ourselves? Our neighbors?

5) Pray for our fellow citizens and ourselves.

@ hillbilly granny I'll tell you what we have done we have given all of our power over to the illusory power of the government. This country was built on revolution, and some how people have forgotten that and become content. People in positions of seeming power will abuse it so it is time we tear down that illusion. Not by violence or force, but by evolution of the mind. By asking over and over again for these extensions people are remaining under the power of the ruling elite. If anyone would like information on how to become active, and effective in your community please contact me. It is time to TAKE BACK what is yours and that is your freedom under natural law as a natural HUMAN BEING not as a corporate entity as we are in the legal and economic systems. to remain slaves to the establishment and ask them for help is to address effects not causes b/c they are the causes. If we keep putting band-aids on cancer WE (as in united) will never win its time to CUT OUT THE TUMORS!!!

IF YOU HAVE THE EYES TO SEE AND THE EARS TO HEAR I WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIGHT, BUT IF YOU REFUSE TO ADMIT THERE HAS BEEN TREASON AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF THE AMERICAN POLITICAL, MILITARY, AND ECONOMIC HIERARCHIES THEN YOU WILL NEVER OPEN YOUR EYES. THE PEOPLE WHO CONTROL AMERICA DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA. THE SOONER YOU COME TO REALIZE THAT THE SOONER YOU CAN TAKE BACK YOUR FREEDOM FROM THE ILLUSIONS OF THE MATERIAL WORLD. JUST B/C WE BELIEVE IN THE CONCEPT OF WHAT AMERICA IS SUPPOSE TO BE DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE IN POWER DO. WE HAVE BEEN FED A LIE IN REGARDS TO FREEDOM, BUT WE MUST FIGHT ON THAT LIE. I filed a TAA petition with the DOL which was finally certified 02/04/2010. However, my Tier 2 unemployment will be exhausted in 2 weeks and I will not receive Tier 3 without an extension and Guess what, the TAA Benifits will not be able to be processed in time to keep me from losing my home of 24 years. As a single parent of 4 boys what does it teach my sons about America and our government when I "a disabled Veteran" who has made on time payments for 24 years looses their home because his job went to India where they hired 2 men to do my job and now I cannot find a job for the first time in my life and the Gov. can't even seem to help a "Disabled Vet" much less it's people at large.

Stephen's situation is real all over this country. Why the negative feedback for a man who has the "guts" to stand up and serve his country. That is more than those who are in charge of this country now have done. I and many feel that in order to be "Commander In Chief" over our military, that person should have served IN the military. A change in the Constitution is necessary. Don't pick on our Vets. You are free because of them. If you don't like this country - GET OUT! We won't miss you!!!! As for the unemployment extention screw up - VOTE IT IN! It is not welfare!!! Employers pay for it. If they continue to have to pay for it may be they will stop sending jobs out of the country and start hiring here. I do believe in buying Made in America. I do believe our country was founded on the American Dream and a Christian foundation. We have become apathetic. Stand up for your rights. Vote the Idiots out of office. Educate your Children! Senate Passes Benefits Bill After Bunning Drops Crusade

By John Stanton

Roll Call Staff

March 2, 2010, 9:45 p.m.

The Senate voted 78-19 Tuesday night to pass legislation extending unemployment benefits, highway funding and other programs for one month, bringing to a close Sen. Jim Bunning’s (R-Ky.) one-man crusade to filibuster the bill.

Final passage of the bill came after Democrats brushed off a Bunning amendment to fund the bill’s $10 billion price tag. As part of the deal to free the legislation, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) agreed to allow a vote on Bunning’s amendment and to allow Bunning to offer two amendments to a long-term extension the Senate is also considering.

Bunning’s filibuster of the bill resulted in thousands of federal workers being furloughed and an interruption in unemployment insurance payments.

Jobless Program Dilemma

March 3, 2010, 4:30am (report abuse)

@ntrlly541 -- I can seee both sides of this. I am a conservative who is unemployed. I am thankful that a TEMPORARY program is available. When I was working I had no problem with most TEMPORARY programs. The biggest problem with extension after extension is that it eventually could create a new welfare class of people living on permanent unemployment 20 years from now because their parent or grandparent got laid off way back in 2008.

Bunning was just saying we should not create (or continue) programs that we do not know how we are going to pay for. That is just wise government. The Democrats want to throw trillions of dollars of our children's and grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's money at the problem to buy votes without any idea where the money to pay for it is going to come from. Do you know? I didn't think so.

First of all, "Thank you for your service to our country. My husband has also put in 32 years of his life to protect our country. May God Bless you and your four boys, and I will hope and pray you get what you need to stay afloat to keep your home. You are right when you say "America Needs Help". America needs to help it's own stay afloat so they don't lose everything they have. Again, "I Thank You"

@CDB: You may own your own company, but when the unemployed lose their lifelines, your company will also lose, as there will be no money going into your company to keep it afloat. Figures, it would be people like you condemning the unemployed. Is this why you have so much time to spend on this site, because your employees are running your company for you. Have a little compassion for your fellow man/woman instead of condemning them time after time. Do you believe in "Karma"? The greatest gift to all is "Love" for your fellow man/woman. There are millions of people who will lose their unemployment benefits this month and during the first week of April. The recent bill only covers those who have Tiers 1-4 left to draw on but those of us who have finished Tier 4 have NO resources at all.We will be on the streets. Many already are.Focus on helping REAL Americans in need the long term unemployed. The media/ Washington fill the airways with promising news about the economy. Jobs are being lost every day and NO millions of jobs have been created, especially for REAL white, taxpayers who were laid off and that is the fault of Washington.Politicians have allowed foreigners to flood this country and take our jobs away from us.We have paid taxes for most of our lives so Washington can have their huge paychecks, etc. Until each and everyone of us has a job the US Gov.should be obligated to add Tiers to unemployment and give back some of what we have given you and of which much of it has gone to foreign country's problems.

Good Morning Everyone..I posted this yesterday, and I want to post it again, I am NOT knocking anyone, as I was accused of doing, I want to help the cause,...I know that it is the weekend but that does not mean we have to give up the fight...what we can do over the next two days is get our battle plan organized...next week will be a push...so here is my part for this battle...since many of you may not have a fax machine and you might only have two faxes a day through the website that is posted...I am offering to fax any letters, since I do have my own fax machince...you can email me your letters to Desparate in Pa@aol.com(exactly like that)and place the letter either in the body of the email or as an attachment and I will run it off and fax it to ALL SENATORS and the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE...I have all numbers needed...it is up to you...but the offer is out there...once the letters are faxed I will destroy them...

I'm not lazy, I'm not a bum, and I'd love to be working right now. I enjoyed having the peace of mind of knowing I could make my house payment. Fact is, for every 1 job, 100 people are applying. I really need the extension bill to be passed through 2010, I'm finishing up school now in an attempt to get a license that would allow me to practice massage until jobs in my field opened back up. Like many, I'm trying to get a job, I just can't find one. My unemployment checks are the difference between my kids having a roof over their heads, and my kids being homeless.

@Nikk How are you managing to go to school and retain your unemployment benefits? I was told that if I tried to expand my education, I would lose my coverage.

My issue is more that, as someone on first-round of unemployment extensions, living in an area with a 13.6% unemployment rate, since my extension ends after April 1st I may lose benefits.

Why are benefits being extended for those in some tiers / expiration dates, but not others? Because I'll exhaust benefits one week later, I don't get the same coverage?

For the people crying "just get a job", it's not that simple. I'm a professional with a BS Degree and experience, but both of my core industries depend on the housing market to rebound to recover adequately.

I am considered overqualified outside of my industry.

And in my industry, unemployment is so high that I'm not overqualified ENOUGH.

I'm competing with engineers for technician-level positions, as an environmental scientist. This is insanity.

I think we should all stop paying any type of taxes. We are paying the House and the Senate. We should fire them all and let them see how it is down here in the bottom of the bucket. Stop paying taxes NOW. They are working for us!! So, as being their employer, I want them all fired!!!!!

I have a theory, the democrats are staying away from this so that the emunployment rate will go down as more people go off the unemployment roles due to no tier 5,

this will make obama look good, in terms of the rate, there are millions going to go off the roles as march and april come to a close.....

Democrats do not have our bests interests at heart, they only care about what they care aobut which is not us...... period

Washington will tout how much better unemployment is with millions off it but they are so self consumed that they will never put the common person first. I can easily see welfare lines, economic crime, homelessness taking steep rises. These factors are already on the increase but the media steers away from any of it because they are also too politically motivated.

Here is the calendar for the Senate for the month of April 2010. From what I can see they will not get back into session until 2:00pm Monday April 12th, and we will have to see what happens when writing those faxes and emails reference the bill # that will be discussed...

I don't know about anyone else, but I am sure tired of the unemploment rate. I have a relative who lost his job Jan 12, 2009. He has tried and tried to get some form of work. No such luck. He finally went back to school but still is having no luck. I could see people giving him a problem but he started working whild in High School. This is the first time he has had no work since he was a child. People need to grow up and understand that other people are having difficulity. I was teaching the other day and one teacher has decided to take up a collection of non-parishible foods. She is also taking in clothes. She sees that it is not the fault of the unemployed that they are not working. She also gave the young people a long hard look at saving and making shure they did not spend way tooo much for anything. It was a just wait until it goes on sale and remember to pay yourself first talk. To her credit the young people got the message.
