September 28, 2009, 11:41am (report abuse)According to the World Health Organization, alcohol-related issues cost our nation in excess of $200 billion annually, with most societal and economic costs borne by taxpayers. Underage drinking costs our nation an additional estimated $63 billion annually. Higher alcohol prices tend to reduce drinking by teens and alcohol-abusive adults. It's time to stop protecting the alcohol industry at public expense - they should pay their share for economic and societal harm they cause this nation. This resolution passes that burden to the taxpayers. Reducing the taxes on the product will only serve to enhance our societal and economic costs. Terrible public policy.
