Only magically abnormal people should own horses?
April 15, 2009, 4:12pm (report abuse)Should the only people that can ever own a horse be people who know they can own it a minimum of 20 years??? That's nuts!
You would mean no one should ever be able to buy a horse if they're someone who might move, might their job, get in an accident, or want the joy of just say 2-5 years of horse ownership and can only afford that!!?!
Debt?
April 15, 2009, 4:19pm (report abuse)Make payments on putting your horse down? And having it disposed of?
If an owner is too poor 1 month to pay for something that doesn't make sense, should we just give them a payment plan so it is ensured that they are poorer for several months? If this was just a very occasional problem, or it only happened with a very few owners, or there weren't viable options, maybe payment plans or charitable donations should be used to remedy it. But that is not the reality.

April 15, 2009, 8:30pm (report abuse)HCHS is not humane disposal. It is not regulated or inspected disposal. It does not provide a USDA inspected meat product for humans...that, is reality. You don't want to plan for disposal without the option of HCHS than don't own a horse. Frankly, please don't ever own a horse. The last 2 previous posts (actually make that the last 3) are nonsensical, nonregulation, lacking law reference or scientifically based. You speculate on horses, then speculate on their longevity. HCHS serves less than 2% of the US Horse population. Sorry guys, but you are just not that special and do not deserve special consideration. More importantly, it is a disservice to our horses who provide service to us.

April 30, 2009, 7:30am (report abuse)I am against human consumption horse slaughter of US Horses because of the myriad of abusive practices to include transport and the FACT that it is not a thoroughly regulated meat source for humans in the US. Foreign consumption of US Horses is a function of loopholes and lack of enforcement.

(logged in user) April 30, 2009, 11:50am (report abuse)I have had everyone of my animals to their deaths in old age. Each one humanely put to sleep when the time came.
Throughout all that time I have had jobs and lost jobs, been sick, yet I never got rid of one of them because of my hard times.
Why? How?
Because I planned ahead, saved money, covered my expenses, developed good financial relationships with my vet, but I always found a way to take care of each one of them.
The problem is people live for today. They do not think of what will happen and what they should be planning for.
It is taking responsibility for what they own and how they live. A vast number of people who are hitting upon hard times these days are those that failed to take charge of their lives in a protective and responsible way.
Yes, there can be a few that no matter what, but they are few and should be helped when the need arises.
If more had taken control of their finances we would have a lot less problems now.

June 10, 2009, 4:42pm (report abuse)My question is do you have a problem with a horse being shot painlessly and professionally and then processed for human consumption? If you do tell me why? Is it because horse flesh makes your skin crawl? Rattlesnake makes my skin crawl but I have no problem with some one eating one of them. Its about choices and being free in the USA to make those choices, whether we agree with them are not. Or is it a case you have such a small life you would like to butt into others? June 12, 2009, 10:40am (report abuse)6-12-2009 FYI:
James Brabazon (Author of the biography of Dr. Albert Schweitzer) defined Dr. Schweitzer’s “Reverence for Life” with the following statement:
"Reverence for Life (Albert Schweitzer) says that the only thing we are really sure of is that we live and want to go on living. This is something that we share with everything else that lives, from elephants (wild horses) to blades of grass – and, of course, every human being. So we are brothers and sisters to all living things, and owe to all of them the same care and respect, that we wish for ourselves.”
You people, who believe that you are the Center of the Universe and all things revolve around you, are so dumbed-down that I doubt you are able to comprehend the significance of the above statement.
Support America’s Great Steeds and support HR 503 and HR 1018. Horse Slaughter in any form is inhumane.

June 19, 2009, 12:59pm (report abuse)"Reverence for Life" is = "Survival Instinct". It is what drives natural evolution and reproduction.
In the presence of health and quality of life there is a wish to survive and continue with life in all living creatures. However, the above statement fails to recognize that when the cycle of life is near its end, health and quality of life is no longer viable...then the wish to go on living/ or "reverence for life" WILL become a reverence for death shared by both man and beast.
You, Betty Kelly, MD must have witnessed this first hand at least once or you are NOT an MD that has any RESPECT for your patient's last wishes.
How many more minutes we can force a heart to beat is NOT and should not be our objective, QUALITY of life and a merciful end is what really matters for both man and beast.

July 6, 2009, 5:43pm (report abuse)Human Consumption Horse Slaughter IS NOT QUALITY OF LIFE OR, I REPEAT, OR A MERCIFUL END OF LIFE FOR US EQUINES. One considers the cruel handling, transport and horrific death through CBG for horses slaughtered for this kind of death being enough to stop it, but what is more disgusting is the lack of inspection and thorough testing for the horsemeat product that humans unwittingly consume.
A horse owner can pay for qualified chem or gunshot death all day long. HCHS is not humane and in fact allows horses to be conscious while they are butchered alive. Anita...you are wrong...AGAIN!
amy...the people in Congress that don't support it listen to constiuents that rely on "squeeze the last final buck" out of their equines for payout; peddling contaminated meat to humans. Ethically corrupt to me.

Poorly worded questions at best and over emotionalized because you are not acknowledging that these animals are not raised as a meat for humans source and skip traditional production, medication and handling regulations by the USDA. HCHS of US equines currently lives in the land of loopholes. Rework you question(s). And this time leave rattlesnakes out of the HCHS debate and the crawl crap.

August 1, 2009, 1:08pm (report abuse)I believe that we need to stop breeding poor quality horses period
130,000 quarterhorses were registered last year how many were poor quaity they live 30 years and take alot of resources $to raise if you cannot afford them do not breed them, the blm.gov we are paying 38 million a yr to feed penned up mustangs that double size every 4 years what is being done for them -are they being castrated, their are breeders that raise them. We have to say when and not breed or adopt or if breeding breed quality -if they want to put someone in jail for abusing an animal fine by me .

August 1, 2009, 1:20pm (report abuse)I agree with Leah plan for life, pets are not disposable they are a responsibility,i chose my horse over having cable,i feed my animals before i eat,a choice i made to protect and care for them, people that get into horses know they live 25+ years or are stupid idiots that dont ask questions and when they do not suit their needs (theses days are letting them starrve to death in their back yard, and themselves sit down to 3 meals a day and make excuses why they cannot get another parttime job to pay for their pets care.
we live in a disposable society there are so many idiots that do not deserve to own an animal-and do -i rescue and foster rescues because of mankinds stupidity and hope this bill passes and puts stupid people away again at our expense__ we are uncle sam >> our goverment is going broke because of poor choices ,greed and corruption
people need to smarten up plan for the future and not own an animals if they cannot handle the responsibility.

October 9, 2009, 1:21am (report abuse)Efforts to fix this issue should be directed at the cause not the symptom: its the excess breeding of horses in the first place. Fees for needle euthenasia and disposal should be funded by government or accepted to be a cost by the owner for their mistake of breeding too many to the point that they can't even pay for a needle for their own animals.

October 13, 2009, 11:17pm (report abuse)Whoever reads this and owns a stallion,or unfixed pet-should really look at the heart of what this means ,We are responsible for every animal that is born if your horse or pet is not quality and the mares is not quality everyone that is bred to your horse-that is another potential aniaml taking up 30 years of earths resources and quite possibly may be abused or neglected in the future. We can make a difference if you are not showing or have not proven your horse stallion(whole horse)-castration is the answer and educating people on what quality is and what their impact is -i see it at horse fairs -if your horse(mare) is quality the stud fee is cheaper--excuse me all horses bred should be quality or not be bred--we have created this mess we need to clean it up people that buy horses should look at the rescues and buy rather than breed for a quality horse.100,000 are still going to MEX /CAN still people are breeding a few words here -PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY care for our animals !

October 18, 2009, 2:27am (report abuse)Get ready here come the horses. Winter is apon u and the ones that have tried to keep there best have lost thier jobs now. October 28, 2009, 4:37pm (report abuse)"Cinderella":
What sound and useful advice. Question: Why aren't you telling owners that have lost their jobs to euthanize humanely. I just got through spending a gazzillion dollars for blankets for my horses because I don't dump them based on the seasons. Evidently you know owners that do. Nice crowd you're running with. And not everyone that has lost their job has dumped their horses, or dogs, or cats or house. Easy? Nope! But not impossible.
MaryS: Many horse owners SPECULATE on their sloppy business ownership with regard to horses (and dogs and cats for that matter) or are just plain stupid.
Congress, regulate this mess and get all these bills passed AND ENFORCED.
