Jobless rate nationwide will be 11%

December 3, 2009, 8:32pm (report abuse)

Why would the President hold a televised JOBS SUMMIT to day b/4 the DOL jobs numbers come out? Because he knows they are going to be BAD! HR 4183 has no text so not sure if its covers LONG-TERM unemployed as well as the others coming off 26 wks tier 1 and tier 2 and EB. Obama should NEVER have persued healthcare reform until the economy recovered, he screwed up big time! AND 15 million of us are paying the price!

Jobless rate 10% for November

December 4, 2009, 9:02am (report abuse)

Because WE aren't counted! Do they think America is stupid???? TRUE #'s UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS 15.5 MILLION! TRUE JOBLESS RATE 17%

454

December 4, 2009, 10:05am (report abuse)

The nation's unemployment rate fell in November because the number of jobless Americans dropped by 325,000 to 15.4 million. The jobless rate is calculated from a survey of households, while the number of jobs lost or gain is calculated from a separate survey of business and government establishments. The two surveys can sometimes vary.

The rate also dropped because fewer people are looking for work. The size of the labor force, which includes the employed and those actively searching for jobs, fell by nearly 100,000, the third straight decline. That indicates more of the unemployed are giving up on looking for work.

The participation rate, or the percentage of the population employed or looking for work, fell to 65 percent, the lowest since the recession began. Once laid-off people stop hunting for jobs, they are no longer counted in the unemployment rate.

454

December 4, 2009, 10:47am (report abuse)

all the bLS did was say 375k unemployed people were marginaly attached and poof, they werent counted. So they shrank the labor pool by 375k, when doing surverys to calculate unemployment this is what you get. Volitle numbers. That means when those workers decide to look for work they will be counted again and the number could swing back up. Most analyst and economists are smart enough to see through the BS numbers

Pelosi said the jobs measure would come on top of a "safety net" initiative that would again extend unemployment payments for those whose benefits have run out and renew a program that offers the jobless a 65 percent subsidy for health insurance premiums under the COBRA program. The safety net measure, while costly, is expected to pass later this month as part of an unrelated spending bill, but the jobs legislation is likely to have to wait until next year.

Or maybe you'r one of them.

So today, we’ve asked Andrew Stettner, deputy director of the National Employment Law Project, to take your questions about unemployment benefits. At NELP, Mr. Stettner has researched unemployment issues and worked on unemployment insurance reform initiatives at the national and state level.

Please submit your questions in the comment section below. We’ll post answers later today and next week.

WHAT: On Monday, December 7th, the National Employment Law Project (NELP), the Center

for American Progress Action Fund and The Half in Ten Campaign will release a new

paper detailing the severe economic and human costs by state if key provisions of the

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) – scheduled to expire at the end of the

year – are not renewed and millions of jobless workers become ineligible for

unemployment and COBRA benefits.

State labor commissioners and officials from eight states as well as a jobless worker at risk

of losing her benefits will join the public policy, labor and civil rights groups as they

highlight the economic stimulus benefits these provisions have already provided, and call

on Congress to renew the ARRA’s provisions before the year’s end in light of the

continued rise in unemployment.
