H.R. 40, The Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act (94 comments ↓)
H.R. 40 would acknowledge the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and it would establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery, subsequently de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, and to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies.

January 8, 2009, 12:02pm (report abuse)The blood of 600,000 American, was shed in eliminating the morally abhorrant practice of slavery. It is time to put this behind us and move on. Despite what the govenment does to hurt this country, it is still (at least for now) the land of opportunity. Anyone who wants to make something of themselves can. The fundamental injustice of slavery has been paid for with the blood of forefathers. Get over it!

Or should certain black families be paid a dollar amount. Well if thats the case I want to be compensated for injustices done to me. Or I can look at my family tree and find someone who had an injustice done to them. History is history and should stay in the past. Learn from the mistakes of the past and step into the future with your eyes opened. If someone today is suffering and being forced into slavery, then by all means we should step up and stop the abuse. But there is no one suffering from this now, not in the sence of this bill. Grow up, stop shouting and reconize that racism is a two way street. Just because you may be black does not mean you can not be racist. and just because you didn't get your way doesn't make me racist.

What about the 600,000 families that lost fathers and brother to the war the freed the slaves. If you want to give reparations to someone give it to them. (I don't think we need to give reparations to anyone for a war that took place 144 years ago).

Native Americans were treated as an enemy, our lands were stolen. So as reparations, give us our land back and you can go back to Europe

Bear with me a moment. How black do I have to be to be eligible for reparations? Is 50% enough? We actually have case law that said a man was black if 1/64 of his blood was black. I suspect that 80% of the population would qualify under this standard.
Back to reality. Slavery was a despicable part of our history. I'd vote that it's time to move on.

The past is the past however, we must realize that there are many people who are still living with this bondage over their lives..and there are some who act as if they have been personally affected by this horible past of our ancestors who are only using it as an excuse to hold grudges because they have hardened their hearts to the truth..the world has changed. People from all races are still living in the hatred because they can not let go and then there are those of us who ache for all people of all races that have been hurt, humiliated and exlpoited We have realized that the truth is we are all created equal. We all have hearts, feelings and hurts. The past is the past and the future is in the hands of the people, not the government. No blacks alive were ever slaves , and not all blacks are descended from slaves . Yet , more money has been wasted on the blacks than any other nationality , but they are never satisfied . They are 10% of the population , but they are responsible for 80% of the crime .

He has something to HIDE, because he is a LIAR! It would have been cheaper for him to send 17 birth certificates ($170) to the courts to prove them wrong.

They got paid next to nothing, and as the song says, 'they owed their soul to the company store'. Their lives were worth nothing. It was stupid for African slaves to be mistreated; they were worth too much.

First of all, Americans of European decent are growing tired of the endless blame game & demands that the "White Man" should pay the descendants of slaves for acts committed over 150 years in the past. There is not one ounce of practicality to this concept. Such a "Committee" comprised of unelected people, including 2 appointees designated by a Pres who attended an Anti-White church for 20 years as well as an event sponsored by an utterly disgusting Racist radical, Louis Farrakhan, will undoubtedly reflect at the very least doubtful results. However more is the likely the case the views of such a panel will be Afro-centrist, divisive, exclusionary & vengeful: serving to produce results harmful to the nation's economy and morale.

January 24, 2009, 1:22am (report abuse)I understand that this bill has been introduced several times before, but with the obvious contemporary reluctance of journalists and elected officials to scrutinize people of color in politics as witnessed in this recent presidential election, it seems considerably likely that the blind determination demonstrated by Rep Conyers may well result in American taxpayers parting with even more hard-earned and much-needed income. Is it not enough that A students of "European descent" are denied college grants while African Americans earning a minimum of a 2.0 GPA are rewarded with a free college education?

January 24, 2009, 1:23am (report abuse)My husband, whose parents are both public school teachers earning the typical meager teacher's salaries, was not eligible for college grants. However on those same grant applications, had he checked the box "African American" he would have been eligible for government subsidized education. Instead, like so many others, he pays several hundred dollars a month in student loans. I don't think he'll be very happy at all to be forced by bureaucrats on Capital Hill to pay upwards of $200k each for a committee of 7 with a dubious agenda to sit and determine how much more of our taxes should into the pockets of those individuals who get those college grants based solely on the color of their skin.
This has to stop.
I do believe if this ridiculous bill gets past the House Judiciary, there will be an uprising in this country unlike any we have seen in numerous decades. America has had just about all the extortion she can take.

Now since the north was instrumental in freeing the slaves , and since the South declared themselves as another nation with Jefferson Davis as their President then Let the south give repartion and not the whole united states.As for slaves , how about white people that were indentured. Was that not a form of slavery? Put the blame where it belongs.As for discrimination , do we not discriminate in our everyday lives against one another. We discriminate against types of music , against neighbors we don't like wheather white or black.The native americans certainly have a legitimate gripe if we want to bring up the past. Crime is commited by ALL races, face it. The government waste of money is not on just one race. Do you realize the actual amount of 'other' races that are on government assistance. I am proud to be American, and proud to call many diffrent people, of other races, MY FRIENDS. This hatred is what keeps our free country from moving forward. Wake up people and stop getting on the blame boat. By the way, the foul language is just proof that many of us need to grow up and use real words. We have not had slavery for more than a century. It's long over and done. Take my deepest sympathy and regret, and understand that we, as a society, have moved beyond this. We are all equals capable of reaching the same heights in society, as proven by our new president.
Look to the hope of a unified present and future, not back to the mistakes of our flawed and divisive past.

January 31, 2009, 2:43am (report abuse)there is also many documents and scientific research that shows that euro-gentiles are, in fact, genetically recessive. it is also demonstrated that prior to 1444, the continent of Afrika was self-sufficient and largely at peace prior to the invasion of the euro-gentile. and then we all know the affects of the transatlantic slave trade, which established europe, primarily portugal, spain, the dutch, belgium, british and america as wealthy nations, which before were in squalor and ignorance.

January 31, 2009, 2:43am (report abuse)it is this tragedy that has removed from descendents of afrikans in amerikkka the culture and teachings that once gave birth to civilization on the earth over 3.2 million years ago that now many descendents of the enslaved now suffer from. no one can deny that 258 years of legalized enslavement plus another 144 years of overt racism and discrimmination would make any people suffer from pathologies. i'm just glad that i've awakened from the spell that the heathen gentile has cast and come to see that the Scripture speaks of what is coming to this land of hypocrisy and injustice. Genesis 15.13-14.

Obama was not raised with a silver spoon, why fund the spoon for other blacks. Although I disagree with his politics he is an example of how hard work and Oprah get you anywhere.

Tax payers have already given Billions through welfare and other give away policies. Doesn't that count as something? What percentage of negro Americans are recipients of that money? What percentage of negro Americans contributed taxes to fund those initiatives? This proposal is FAR more than a slippery slope. Let's please get back to running the strongest country in the world before it's too late....if it's not too late already.

Mom was white, dad was black he is 50/50 and since whites are the majority and are more powerful than blacks that makes him white. He is going to continue the democratic tradition of taking opportunity away from black people by expanding entitlement programs. It is unfortunate that these entitlement programs will only create a handful of one-hit-oneder hip-hop artists. The rest will continue the tradition of making babies, doing drugs, and killing each other.

No hand outs. There are of course a few exceptions, but a very few. No one should disciminate, that means against whites too. This is disciminating to them as a group based on their race!
