September 20, 2009, 9:16pm (report abuse)I worked until the age of 67 while SS was subtracted from each of my weekly pay checks with the amounts increasing especially over the last two years. I expect all seniors deserve their cola. It's not a handout it is money paid in over their lifetime. Thank you.

September 22, 2009, 1:05am (report abuse)Why should a COLA be given when the cost of living is lower than last year? This is just another piece of feel-good legislation that has no merit.

September 28, 2009, 2:50pm (report abuse)I am a 100% combat wounded Vietnam vet, infantry, I depend on this COLA as I can not work, I want to but VA says I an unemployable.

September 30, 2009, 12:22am (report abuse)Dennis, your sob-story carries no water. The COLA is only there to offset increased cost-of-living. Since there has been no increase in the cost of living there should be no COLA.

October 2, 2009, 12:41pm (report abuse)Dennis deserves the COLA and more. I am also disabled but not a combat veteran. I would also like to work but I cannot find a job that pays less than the $900 per month that I am allowed to earn. Has anybody asked how the COLA is configured? It does not reflect the cost of living increase that I have! Never, never, never give up Dennis!

October 2, 2009, 9:59pm (report abuse)ElaineLA,
Why do you keep telling the same lies over and over? The cost of living is lower for the third-quarter of this year than for the same quarter last year. And since that is true, there is no reason for a Cost Of Living Adjustment. Unless you want them to adjust your disability payment downward to reflect tha lower cost of living.

October 11, 2009, 4:03pm (report abuse)So just where is the "emergency"? The cost of living is lower than it was this time last year. As far as I can see those who are in favor are just trying to get more for themselves and screw the rest of us.

October 12, 2009, 3:41pm (report abuse)Healthcare and Medication costs have increased disproportionately to the standards that determine cost of living. Those who pay for this healthcare and medicines will see an increase in their cost of living. There are many who do not depend on the SS benefits as a supplement to their retirement but as their main income. It is an emergency when you have to choose between paying a bill or being able to pay for needed medication. I hope you nay sayers are never in that situation.

October 12, 2009, 9:51pm (report abuse)Since you fail to understand I will describe it for you one more time.
First, the overall cost of living is determined using those very things you have described as a part of the base.
Second, the average cost of those items has not risen as fast as you describe. In fact, the cost for many prescriptions are now lower because of the efforts of several retailers.
Third, why should the taxpayer, who ends up supporting this "emergency money", pay for those who are unable to plan for their retirement years? And don;t give that old whine about "It's not my fault. It's the fault of (fill in the blank). Pi$$ poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

October 13, 2009, 6:55am (report abuse)So, I suppose you, CDB, are going to refuse Social Security because of your great planning. Our elderly planned for retirement 40 years ago when they were working but look how our economy has changed.
If you know about the Consumer Index, it is the average of 8 different areas of the economy. Some can be up like medication and healthcare and some can be down like housing. If you are affected more by drug increases and hospital stays than housing, then your individual cost of living rises. Get real CDB and I hope no one robs you mattress

October 13, 2009, 10:24am (report abuse)I have planned well and my social security is only one part of my retirement. Without a COLA I will do quite well. Get real Rebecca and look around you. Why do you think the rest of us should provide for those who can't plan and save?

October 14, 2009, 6:35am (report abuse)My cost of living is going up next year. My prescriptions are NOT cheaper. My health insurance is increasing as well as my prescription drug plan. Utilites are raising their rates and the list goes on. We are seniors in our seventies and have worked hard all our lives just to see our income shrinking. In our area food prices still remain very high. It is easy for one to say not to give a COLA for they are not in the same set of circumstance that we find ourselves in.

October 14, 2009, 6:44am (report abuse)In my eighties - not in the greatest health. Lost most of my 401K. Health care rising. I really need the COLA as I am unable to work any longer.

October 14, 2009, 11:37pm (report abuse)Sorry old folks but I don't see why I should have to pay to het you out of trouble. I know good and well you wouldn't help anyine else.

October 15, 2009, 12:52am (report abuse)Personally, while I could use the money, I really don't want them tinkering with the way the COLA works. It gives me a cold-chill to think that this could lead to the loss of the automatic COLA at some date in the future. At this point I would rather forego a small increase to keep them from messing up the system.

October 15, 2009, 6:01am (report abuse)People like you are not very good citizens. I most likely have paid more into this society than you ever will. I can see why the USA is in so much trouble. You are right maybe the money should be spent on the wealthy and seeking water on the moon! I hope your company never goes bankrupt and YOU lose all Your benefits.

October 15, 2009, 6:05am (report abuse)As far as Cola is concerned. The damage is already done. It is most likely a thing of the past unless all concerned try to change it. It gives me a chill to think Congress can give or not Cola. Hmm I wonder how many in Congress are getting a raise this year.

October 15, 2009, 1:18pm (report abuse)RSB, just who are you talking to here? Perhaps you should clarify that.
As to your comment about congress taking away the COLA, that would require a change in the law. Congress has not taken anything. The CPI-W for this year is lower than last and according to the law no COLA is authorized. What is being proposed now is to start tinkering with it and that concerns me a great deal. If congress starts messing with things they usually just make them worse.
