Yet Another Opportunity for Foul-Mouthed Rants!

Another bill to extend unemployment benefits was introduced yesterday. The text of the bill isn’t available yet, so I can’t tell you how long it would extend them for. The bill is H.R. 3756. What’s this about foul-mouthed rants? The ...

Please vote this in!! I am laided off from an automotive company and have never seen anything like it. Already lost our home and can't find work anywhere! We are not in a crisis, just an economic shift, due to the internet and digital world replacing jobs and wiping out the middle man. We must get retrained in the digital world. But during this shift please help us!

WOW! Sounds like a couple of people from Michigan. This sure got to be a rough place to live. This bill sounds good but I haven't seen the fine print yet. One positive note: George(Hoover)Bush is not the President. Imagine the hell we would be in if that buffoon was still president. One sobering thought 6 out of 10 southern Republicans believe Obama is an alien born in Kenya. I have a new appreciation for the Beverly Hillbillies (laugh)If I move out of Michigan it's not going be south. We need to get rid of the Republicans. We need a two party system but those people are destroying the country with their "no to everything but tax cuts" What a colossal mess!!--anyone know when congress comes back from break? This bill isn't going to go anywhere until they get back.

Congress comes back the Labor day Holiday. They stated they will address in early September.

Yes, we need this bill to pass and also HR 155(to suspend unemployment taxes).

Mike 1234,

Some facts on Michigan:

Governer- Democrat

Senators- 2 Democrats

House Reps- 8 Democrats, 7 Republicans

Unemployment rate June 09 is 15.2%, highest in the nation.

Sales Tax- 9th highest in the country (tied with several other states)

Income tax- 14th highest in the country.

Property tax- 18th highest in the country.

I personaly do not like either party and think they both have their faults, but let's stop kidding ourselves by blaming only one party for the mess we are in. There is enough to go around for everyone!

I believe this bill will pass as it's written.

The question is this:

Is it fair? There are many states that are hovering at 8% and up that won't be included in this legislation for some time. It's known that unemployment will rise through 2010. It's as difficult to find a job in those states? Why are they excluding them when it was urgent for extension in 08 for states above 6.5%??

Congress needs to address this and also add on weeks. 13 isn't enough in this bad economy and we know it's not getting better anytime soon. :(

TO Gene. Yes you are right a politician are at least 50% scumbag regardless of party. It's the nature of the beast but Republicans have sunk to a lower level. The hypocrisy and selfish unconcern about anything other than corporate interest, Objectively: no to everything but tax cuts doesn't really solve problems and some of the stupid falsehoods they try to mislead people with is disgusting. Frankly I don't agree with Obama on everything but at least there is a bit of compassion and there seems to be a rational effort to solve a problem instead of no to everything. Honestly the south has never got over the civil war and since the civil rights of the 60s the republicans have conned the south to vote against there own self interest & the reason Mich is hurting is NAFTA & WTO No one can compete with 30 cents an hour wages in China. Laugh now but we all are going to pay for that soon.Free trade and capitalism is great but it needs to be for everyone not just the utra rich.

August 6, 2009, 7:54pm (report abuse)

I believe that we should be stimulating the economy by creating jobs not by Extending Unemployment benefits.

The stimulus package was to do that where I do not see it. as everyone before me has stated they could not find jobs.

the answer is clear and it is not extending unemployment. let it be known that all want to return to work earning a family wage. that is the key.

Unemployedunforunately

August 6, 2009, 11:38pm (report abuse)

get people back to work.

I think that everyone would agree with you. Ultimately, what we want is a job back.

However, with the administration acknowledging that unemployment has not even peaked yet(not until mid 2010) - job creation is not occurring. When I apply to a job on career builder, I can see how many people have viewed it. In the 1000's usually. There are not enough jobs to go around.

In the mean time, what are families suppose to do? They at least need unemployment to get them through this. Otherwise, further foreclosures, homelessness, and welfare application. We do not want that either!

I hope there is another extension too but you know I am grateful. I never expected the last one and I hoped I wouldn't need this one. The job market in Michigan is a disaster but jobs aren't going to magically appear. We need to quit pushing free trade and immigration rights at the expense of US citizens who need a job that is now being filled by a Chinese worker who works for next to nothing. We can't compete with that & with all due respect to immigrants they came here illegally we don't owe them anything, That's 11 million jobs that can be filled by Americans. We need to put American workers first. Politicians have to start representing us instead of multinational corps interests. They call it protectionism, so what! We pay more for the junk we buy at Walmart but everyone works! That's a trade off most of us would make. Restrict imports and tough immigration enforcement. Sounds easy? Maybe a resurgence of the unions would restore balance because nobody seems to care!

I agree with everything said. I have written my congressmen, president, Govenor, Senators, Everyone I can think of, no matter what kind of people they are so that they will see that we need more help. Even if we move out of our high unemployment states wehre will we go, it is happening all over the world everywhere. We just all need to be active and let our government know where we stand and ask for help. We can also pray that this depression (not recession) ends soon. I wish you all the best of luck and let's just keep it strong together and they should pass this bill.

I wish that I was able to find a job, I apply at 2-3 places a week and I have even been looking out of state because noone seems to hiring. I do not know how we will make it if they do not give another extension, we are struggling now to pay our rent, if I do not get another extension we will not a car to drive because we will not be able to make the payment each month. I am really worried on what is going to happen. I have not seen any new jobs in our area, all I see is more businesses closing their doors and letting employees go. We need jobs if they are not going to extend our unemployment. I have notice that most of the people complaining about extending the unemployment benefits are the ones that make 100,000. or more a year.

Joan from CA

August 10, 2009, 6:06pm (report abuse)

We really need the unemployment extension - especially the high unemployment states like MI, CA, etc.

It is almost impossible to get a job here in CA - I've sent out 550-600 resumes - interviewed with nine companies - no job yet. The employers get so many resumes, they don't even respond to you.

I've never seen this in my lifetime! We need unemployment benefits until such time as there are (realistic)jobs. I think there are over 14 million people unemployed in the U.S. - over 2 million in CA. Those of us that had been in the mortgage business are definitely discriminated against - many companies just throw our resumes away. The only thing we can do is "diguise" the fact that we worked in mortgage, but once the employer reads our job description, they can probably tell. Hopefully the mortgage stigma will ease in 2010!

Employers have also taken advantage of the job situation by lowering salaries - nice!!

Good luck to all!

Congress should extend the EB for 20+ wks in the states that have double-digit jobless rate. They are all in sic that America wouldn't see any improvement until 2010. The states are bankrupt as it is, so they will not be able to help with social services programs for the Million+ people who will exhaust their extended benefits. We can bailout $700 Billion to banks but not the help the jobless Americans through this Recession which would see daylight until well into 2010?. Something is wrong folks!

Am a 59 year old victum of the auto industry reduction. Live in a middle rural area of Mich. Can't move because house won't sell. Been on market for 3 years. Lost 40% of value. Now owe more than its worth. Once unemployment runs out house will go into foreclosure, won't be able to pay taxes or afford propane. No jobs here. Been applying out of state, south and west. Replies back, you need 6 mon exp to operate a coffee cart in hotel, 6 months to year to be a host. I have a college education and am willing to work fast food, drug store, grocery store, etc. Have had a couple interviews but I think my age is a factor. There are 10 to 50 people for every job out there. Without extended unemployment my husband who is 72 and disabled and is still willing to work are sol. Am to young to collect pension and social security and I guess to high risk to hire. Never have seen anything this bad, not even in the 80's. Younger people go into medical, helath care field. God bless us all.

Both Bills in the House & Senate can have amendments added to it to change it. www.nelp.org has been pushing for 10wks for all states & 13-20 weeks for states with double-digit jobless rates. Everyone should be emailing & calling their Reps & Senators before they head back to D.C. AND once they get back to Congress.

Paula

August 20, 2009, 8:34pm (report abuse)

Any Bill can be changed by adding Amendments to it, so all the unemployed people in the non-double digit jobless states can certainly use their VOICE with emails and calls to those that represent you in Washington. I'm confused because reading the bill, the first part says 13 weeks but the 2nd part lower down says 20 weeks?.

S.1647 is a better bill. It gives the extension to states with a 3 month average or 8.5% instead of 9%. I think they should give it to all states or at least stick to the EB rule of an 8% average.

I can understand everyone's frustration and downright anger. There is more than enough blame to go around, not just now but for years and years past!! I am in Michigan, am almost 62, and have been w/o a job since Dec of 2006. Unemployment ext benefits ran out in late May...

We all need help NOW! We need a future predicated on real work for those who cannot even think of retirement or Soc. Sec. There needs to be a huge second stimulus for all of those who need help, and there would be an immediate expenditure and recycling back into the economy... not like the banks who have sucked it up, and made it work for them. This country cannot stand to be a land of have and have nots.

To the Senate & Congress, please hear the cries from the heartland!!!

I'll bet that the NY reps co sponsering the bill get it down to at least 8.5. I think NY state is about 8.4 but NYC is over 9%.How convenient for them. Steven T raises a great alternative with 10 wks to everyone and 13 to 20 for the higher ones. Thanks Steven for the heads up on nelp.org

i was illegally terminated in new york, then moved to california. what a mistake. i haven't been able to get a job since february 2008 and i'm 50 and have worked my entire life. THIS IS A DEPRESSION NOT A RECESSION. we should start a petition to get this legislation passed as soon as they return in september. and it should be 20 weeks not 13. going to from middle class to below the poverty line has taught me a lesson in humility, but how can i help if i can't even buy food?

The only "depression" here is the fact that all you losers expect the rest of us to support your lazy a$$es.

To the idiot that would only sign his name with ... ,You sound like some punk that got a state job through a family member or by being under a desk, a state job that takes a act of god to fire you, you ride around in a truck sweeping up and making a lot more than your worth. I'm 50 and worked all my life and raised 6 kids and this is the first time i've had to take unemployment benefits and their almost gone,I can do a wide variety of things but there is nothing out there, and to hear a smuck like you make a comment like that, you have a loser personality.

Unfortunately folks there will always be ignorant folks like the author of comments 10:11am, thats how they get off because something is missing in THEIR lives! People like that it just smarter to ignore because they want the feedback so they can have their laugh, then they go onto another website and do the same ignorant thing all over again. Lets concentrate on making sure Congress/Senate takes up HR 3404 & S.1647 as soon as they return and not put it off to argue healthcare reform again! www.nelp.org had a article that decent Americans are falling off the Labor statistics, next year their will be 4.4 MILLION who will exhaust their 26 wks of UI and they will be eligible for the EUC, but they will fall off of the DOL labor stats. Thats while the #'s appear as less claims, and the economy is improving when WE know its not. 6 MILLION decent Americans who did nothing wrong but lose their jobs during a horrible Recession! No the economy is not improving, its just a numbers game!

Steven... I have called my Senator in Rhode Island and spoke to his office person. He has the bill tht in the Senate and I hope it goes thru for 13 or 20 wks because this economy shows no sign of improving for months to come, the states will be hard pressed to handle the thousands of jobless who will be seeking social services and welfare so either way the Govt HAS to pay. We have 2 wars going on including the unprovoced attack in Iraq and this country has spent $1 TRILLION dollars! We are American citizens that broke no laws we just loss our jobs and the economy is so bad its hard to find another. We need help and we deserve help. I Don't apologize, I don't feel guilty.

Dear Spencir here is an email directory for your State Reps. http://www.webslingerz.com/jhoffman/congress-email.html

We have an OBAMA-NATION (Abomination, a disgrace in the white house) He can't produce a birth certificate, he IS an illegal alien and ALL you people who voted for him deserve what he is doing to our GREAT USA, but we don't deserve it. NEVER EVER in the course of the USA has any President wasted so much money as a matter of fact, ALL THE PRESIDENTS COMBINED didn't waste as much as this President. HE IS POWER HUNGRY, he wants to control the Private Businesses large & small. WAKE UP you morons, he has you so blind. I am not a Republican, I am an independent that is just SICK at seeing her country trashed by the ANTI-CHRIST OBAMA.

I am a Independent who is PROUD to have voted for President Obama! I am proud of the ARRA of the Stimulus package, of the cap on the Credit card companies, I'm proud of his reversal of Bush's STEM CELL RESEACH stoppage, I'm proud for the addl funding for our US Soldiers equipment that Bush didn't think about when they were getting killed left & right in Iraq. I proud President Obama added addl funding for our US Soldiers to attend college upon their return. I proud the President added addl funding for SCHIP to cover 4 million more kids!. I proud that George W. Bush is no longer President because he left a $300 BILLION deficit and a $2 TRILLION national debt, Tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans that added to the economic meltdown this country has been in since 2007 PLUS he left a RECESSION!. DISGUSTED???? Majority of America was DISGUSTED & they proved that on 11/4/08! So you can take your B.S. to your conservative sites mingle with the other teabaggers of your party.

DISGUSTED. Please take your political commentary someplace else because its not wanted here. People by the thousands are losing their unemployment benefits and you post hateful things against this new President. I think what he did with extending benefits was a good thing because he didn't cause this recession and this awful economy. We don't want your hate, please go away.

Anyone on EB is longterm jobless and should be up on whats going on with extending benefits, when Congress returns to D.C. and any Bill or Bills that will be addressed regarding this important subject, especially if you have a TV or RADIO. I can't believe serious-minded people are still asking the same old questions about "will we get another extension" and "when does congress return". Current events lazy people! Everyone should know this information unless their are people who like playing games and have NO interest in EB at all.

If they do not pass H.R. 3404 as soon as they return there will be 500,000 to 1.5 million of us out in the cold by years end. My EB ends next week. We will be depending on the grace of God to pay our bills and stay in our home. I live in OHIO, there just are NO jobs!!! for every open job there are 5 or 6 appling.

I've been unemployed now for 18 months here in Califonia .. It sickens me to hear the rants from people who probably have jobs and think they are above losing their jobs. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT WON'T/CAN'T happen to YOU?! I search for jobs DAILY and apply for everything I think I can do. I'm applying for jobs where I would make barely half of what I made at my last job and guess what? I get nothing. No response no reply nothing .. These people with attitudes and comments toward people who are in need - need a lesson in humility. Up until february 2008 I had been working steadily for the past 30 years - I'm not lazy or a loafer nor am I looking for a handout. These are trying times for so MANY people. If you have a job - be thankful that you do!
