January 8, 2009, 11:50am (report abuse)Eliminating the discrimanatory practices of the income tax code is paramount to securing the blessings of libtery to ourselves and our prosperity. Way which our income tax system is implemented and administered as well as propagandized is like a page out of the communist manifesto. Our founding father included a phrase in the constitution which prevented the governement from discriminating on the amount a person should pay - Census and Enumeration. Our income tax is a discusting abomination to our freedom. A excise tax is the only way to tax which is not an abomination to our freedom and allows people to choose the amount they pay the governement. Additionally, the idea that the govenment takes money out of my paycheck is disgusting in a free country. The flaw of the constitution is that there were some aspects which were amendable which shouldn't be

January 8, 2009, 2:32pm (report abuse)Beware baby boomers! When you were working, they wanted to tax your income. Now that you're close to retirement, they want to tax what you spend. Clearly this is unfair. I'd be willing to listen if the govt would be willing to refund my lifetime income taxes.

January 9, 2009, 5:19pm (report abuse)Be very careful here folks. While the repeal of the income tax sounds like a good deal remember that you still have to pay for your government somehow. And that will be through the national sales tax, which will be in addition to your state and local sales taxes.
If you really think this is a good deal remember that everyone who buys anything will be paying more, even those who cannot really afford to pay more. Ask a citizen of any country that uses this type of tax what they think.
Freedom First
January 11, 2009, 9:25am (report abuse)Thats right J.R. its better to have the government confiscate money out of my paycheck every month. This is nothing more than stealing. If I don't want to pay, they come and take my property. I think if you read the law, you will see there are provisions to ensure that the poor pay essentially zero taxes. Our founding father put provisions in the original constitution that would have prevented our current tax system for a reason. It punishes success, it punishes successful businesses and encourages companies to produce goods outside of the United States. The income tax is a draconian, outdated, inefficient and system that is used to control and manipulate the people of this country and its time it stopped!

January 11, 2009, 11:41am (report abuse)The imposition of a 23 percent national sales tax in place of the income tax is a ploy by the rich to get out of paying their fair share and transfer the burden to those who cannot afford it, nothing more.
I cannot afford this and will certainly do my part to oppose it's passage.

January 12, 2009, 12:08pm (report abuse)J.R, there was this other guy who used the perception of financial inequality to persuade the lower classes to rise up and over throw the fat cats, he went by Karl Marx. He also published a "top ten" list of things that had to happen to institute a communist regime; a heavily progressive income tax is tops on the the list. Why... because it promotes mediocratiy, by punishing success. If are so upset by the fact that people have more than you, do something about. Chances are that your aren't creative enough, or willing to take the risks, or don't have a unique idea which you are willing to work really hard to bring to fruition. If you were willing to do those things, then you would be one of the fatcats. Life isn't fair, that doesn't mean we should use the government to level the playing field by punishing sucess.
J.R.
January 12, 2009, 12:29pm (report abuse)If you are attempting to equate my position to that of Marx you simply show that you are an elitist who stands to gain from passage of this bill.
The government is often the only defense the poor have against your kind.
As to my own situation I have more than enough to take care of me and mine so make no assumptions.
This bill is bad for the country.

January 12, 2009, 12:50pm (report abuse)Have any of you even read the books (yes, more than one) that explains the Fair Tax in detail and can answer all your skeptisizm !?
We need change and a way to eleviate the burdomsome cost of the IRS with it's tedious rules and loopholes for the rich. Yes, the rich can stay rich with the current system and the Fair Tax proposal can eliminate most of this!
Freedom First
January 13, 2009, 12:06pm (report abuse)J.R.~ and what kind am I, well since you are little confused on the matter I will tell you.
I believe that you have right to keep what you earn - all of it.
I believe that when you make a purchase (of your choice) that the government then can place an excise tax on that item.
I believe if you read the bill, the poor will pay NO taxes.
I believe those who say that people don't like exise taxes are right, because people see in every transaction how much the government sucks from our economy.
I believe that I have a right to spend my money the way I see fit in a free country.
I believe that everyone gains from the passage of this bill.
I believe that there is a motive of gain for the passage of every bill for someone or the government
I believe that you are are the elitist because it is you who supports a discriminatory system of taxation which hurts the lifeblood of our economy in order to supress some feeling of guilt for your own success or well being.

January 15, 2009, 12:41am (report abuse)Hi, I think everyone needs to read The FairTax Book by Neal Boortz. It goes into detail on a number of the subjects mentioned here. This includes:
1. How there will be a price adjustment where prices will drop because corporations no longer need to pay taxes, offsetting the 23% tax increase.
2. No other nation has a tax system comparable to FairTax. It is not a VAT.
C.C. Rider
January 15, 2009, 2:59am (report abuse)"there will be a price adjustment where prices will drop because corporations no longer need to pay taxes"
Talk about pie in the sky. Don;t ever think corporations will reduce prices. All this will do is increase profits, especially for the moneymongers who are in favor of this abortion.
Bruce
January 15, 2009, 11:31am (report abuse)I took a quick look at the bill and couldn't find any reference to language that would avoid double taxation (that is, applying a 23% sales tax on income that has already been income taxed at a similar rate). Have I missed something?
Like many boomers, I've paid a lot of income taxes over the years. Now the government wants to tax this money again??? I understand that the incentives are better on a consumption tax, but my instincts have always been to duck when someone calls anything "fair". I believe my instincts are correct on this one.
Refund my lifetime income taxes and then we can talk.
Freedom First
January 15, 2009, 11:59am (report abuse)In regard to your comments Bruce, I would like to make a few points.
1. The implementation of the Fair tax is conditional on the removal of the 16th amendment from the constitution, which removed the census and enumeration clause from the original constiution and gave the government the power to discriminate in the amount it taxes people based on income.
2. Without removal of the 16th amendment, I would not support the Fair tax, the people of this country are grossly over taxed as it is, the last thing we need is another tax on everything else.
3. The one thing that is hard for people to understand, is that the consumer ultimately pays all taxes anyway. When you buy a gallon of gasoline, you are paying the income taxes for the corporation that produced it the company that transported to the station and the convienent store. On top of that you are also paying for all of those entities to hire people to figure out the tax and the IRS to process it. All costs you pay!
Freedom First
January 15, 2009, 12:26pm (report abuse)Sorry I ran out of space...
4. Ultimatly the fair tax will result in a reduction in the base price of all products because the cost of producing them will go down. As long as there is competition in the market for those good, basic economics dictates this. This is why the cost of a gallon of gas in your neighborhood is generally the same +/- a few cents.
5. In other words to allay your fears, you would not really pay much if anything more than you are currently paying... And it is better for the country overall.
J.R.
January 16, 2009, 10:01am (report abuse)Notice the caveat "you would not really pay much if anything more".
In other words it appears this individual expects you will pay more. How is that "better for the country overall"? More likely it is better for his or her pocketbook, not yours.
Freedom First
January 16, 2009, 11:45am (report abuse)This is the caveat, you may pay 1 to 2 percent more for goods.
This is the caveat to the caveat - you keep everything you make whether its earned income, divendens, 401k dispersments etc. None of the income from any of these instruments is taxed.
There are no more loopholes, no tax credits, everyone gets taxed fairly and evenely based on their consumption.
If I buy a $20,000,000 private jet I pay a heck of a lot more tax and the person who buys a $20,000 sedan.
Furthermore, if I buy a used car, I pay no tax on it - the taxes were paid when it was new.
This legislation will not just benefit me, it will benefit everyone, particularly American workers and American goods.
Currenly our income tax system encourages corporations to move operations to countries with lower income taxes - this levels the playing field and puts American goods at an advantage over goods produced in countries that have an income tax.
Good for you, me and America! You can't beat that
Freedom First
January 16, 2009, 11:53am (report abuse)It amazes me how sad this country has become, that people think it is OK for the government to just take money from us and then we defend it. It is sad state of affairs.
I resent those who accuse me of only wanting this because it benefits my pocketbook. Do you resent the colonial citizens who threw the tea over the sides of the ship because it hurt theirs. I don't drink tea so why should I care.
This is more about the ideology of Freedom than anything. The idea the you keep what your earn because it is a basic human right.
The government and the media have perverted what rights really are, in this country you used to have a right to your property, and your money is your property whetheer you earn it as income or not.
People have forgotten what Freedom is and accept the status quo for whatever reason.
The income tax should have never come to fruition under our original consitution because our founding fathers respected individual liberty and property!
Bruce
January 16, 2009, 3:43pm (report abuse)Freedom First: I think you're missing my main point.
Take the case of 22 year old Fred, who believes in the fair tax. He pays a 23% federal sales tax, the fair tax. He doesn't pay any federal income tax. It seems pretty fair to Fred -- he's taxed ONCE.
Now let's take the case of Bob, a baby boomer. Bob has earned $1 million over his lifetime and has just retired. Let's say he's paid $150K in federal income taxes and he's saved another $200K. Now we change the rules: Bob is going to be paying 23% federal sales tax on every dollar he spends. That wouldn't be so bad if the new rules had applied when he was saving every dime, but they didn't.
The problem is that Bob has already paid tax on the $200K he has saved -- and now the government will tax it AGAIN when he spends it. As I see it, that is the UNFAIR part of the, um, fair tax. Bob is taxed TWICE.
Clearly this is not fair; Fred and Bob are not treated equally under the proposed law.
Ed
January 16, 2009, 5:35pm (report abuse)Bruce and others,
I could understand your aguements against the FairTax if the current system only taxed everyone and their income once. However, the "underground economy" and those who don't have incomes are not currently taxed.
Also, not only incomes are currently taxed. If you have a savings account, you earn intrest which is taxed. If you acrue enough to invest in stocks, etc., you pay capital gains taxes (short and long term). When you sell, you pay even more taxes. If you try to give it away, there's a gift tax. When you die, the IRS nails you again with the estate tax! This is fair and proper because.........??
You're also forgetting the every time "Bob" goes to buy something, he gets to pay more taxes. Do you really think that corporations actually pay corporate taxes?? Of course not - it's passed down to the consumer each step of the way.
I could go on poking holes in your arguement. Instead, please read FairTax: The Truth.
J.R.
January 16, 2009, 6:34pm (report abuse)Ed, have you looked at the tax laws lately? I give my children a chunk of their future inheritance tax-free every year. And, with good estate planning there won't be any tax bite when they get the rest. At first blush your arguments don't seem to hold much water.
Freedom First
January 16, 2009, 7:23pm (report abuse)So J.R. you want to keep the tax code the way it is because you can give a portion of your savings to your kids tax free. Are you not accruing interest on that money - which is taxed?
I would like to reiterate Ed's point again - all corporate income taxes are passed down to the consumer, including the cost of paying those taxes. In the end the only differnce in the amount you would pay for a good is around 1 or 2 percent greater. Which is easily going to be offset from the taxes your won't be paying on your dividends, savings accounts, investments etc.
Neil
January 17, 2009, 1:20pm (report abuse)J.R., don't you want your children to be able to live and work in a country without income taxes? Without having to give the government a share of the interest they earn on that money you are giving them? Without having to spend the time and money to create an estate plan?
J.R.
January 17, 2009, 2:47pm (report abuse)I want my children to be able to live and work in a country where the elits don't have even more advantages than they do now. As far as I am concerned, all this bill will do is make the rich richer and the poor even poorer. You can believe all the hype you want but that is how it will come out.

January 19, 2009, 6:17am (report abuse)Class warfare never got anyone anywhere except more taxed. The income tax was imposed by people in the government using class warefare to convice people that it was necessary in the first place. All the income tax does is punish those that are sucessful, so people like you can feel better about yourselves and the people are under the governments thumb. I think you would be happier to live in France, they have a system that I think would be more "fair" for you over there. The idea that the government should be used to cut people down a notch is what is wrong with people in this country. If you don't like that the executives at GE make more than you don't by GE compact flouresent light bulbs! You have the power through the way you spend your money to determine who becomes rich and who doesn't, you are just lazy and expect the government to do it for you. If you want the product don't complain that someone is making a profit.

January 19, 2009, 1:55pm (report abuse)We eliminate the IRS and 16th amendment then a FAIR Tax put in place, we would control how much we pay in taxes. Everyone would be paying as opposed to all the illegals and those who don't want to work not paying a dime. WE THE PEOPLE would control what money Congress has to work with by how we spend. But We need to stipulate in the FAIR Tax that Congress nor any government office can raise taxes with out the vote for that increase by the majority of the American People. This country ran with out an Income tax for over 100 yrs we can do it again if we would quit sending money we DON"T have to foreign countries, quit giving entitlements to illegals, got rid of the pork in DC. The only thing we should be funding is our Military nothing more.We do not need government issued Health care, or their involvement in the banks and business's. We CAN control what the Government spends Reason so many lies are out about the FAIR Tax is DC does not want to stop their spending sprees.

January 19, 2009, 2:19pm (report abuse)Reading some of the comments and seeing the vote tally blows my mind. Does the government have the majority of you so well indoctrinated that you can't see how you are being shafted with the Income tax. Anyone who believes this would be a bad thing I urge you to go and watch a movie by Aaron Russo "America Freedom to Facism" He talks about why we should NOT be paying an INCOME tax as the IRS claims it to be. Our Paychecks are not INCOME it is payment for services rendered. A trade so to speak. Do you really expect the government to tell you that the FAIR tax is anything good? No way, they don't want their money tree to dry up. With what we have now you will pay on your IRA's, 401K's, savings, checking, death tax, Capital gains and some of these will be increasing very soon. You may like the idea of paying more I for one do not which is why I believe in the FAIR Tax. Government gets crazy then buy less and cut off their money supply. We an upper hand with a Fair Tax.

I am a huge proponent of the Fair Tax just as Freedom First is. You asked how is this better for the country well it is quite simple actually. It will add approximately 40 million people to the tax roles. Now before you go crazy I am talking about the illegal immigrants and the drug dealers and all the people who work under the table to avoid "paying their fair share". Plus anyone under the poverty line will pay not taxes through the prebate that will be mailed out monthly. It will eliminate a 20 to 25 billion dollar a year program called the IRS. Finally it lets you decide how much in taxes you want to pay. If you want to go and buy a 5 million dollar yacht well you pay the taxes for it. If you dont then youdont. Instead of the system right now where you are buying that 5 million dollar yacht for someone else because of the goods and services that you purchase now. I really hope you will at least consider this train of thought and pick up the book or read the actual bill.

January 20, 2009, 1:42pm (report abuse)J.R.
The elites as you dont pay income taxes now dont you understand that. They primarily have their wealth in investments not income. Currently the capital gains tax is right around 15% to 19%. The income tax is at just under 30%. So you see under the current system the elites have it better than you do but with the fair tax you both pay equally 23%.

January 20, 2009, 6:01pm (report abuse)It's unfortunate that citizens tend to wring their hands about the "rich"! "The fat cats are making a killin' off us poor folks"! Let us not overlook that the VAST majority of us started at the bottom of the barrel.
Wake up america: no intelligent person could possibly think the current tax system is fair.
As for the comments about poor Bob, who worked his entire life and now would be penalized by the Fair Tax system. . . Bruce I've personally paid more taxes in my life then you can possibly imagine. At 63 years of age I would be pleased to welcome a Fair Tax system. The existing system is nothing more then a disguised income redistribution system that is administered by congress.
I would gladly pay 23% on my consumption rather then have the existing system continue to steal from my lifelong work.
J.C.
January 21, 2009, 10:05am (report abuse)You cannot tax wages or production and expect a free economy to flourish. The only fair tax is a tax on land. Every person needs land to live on, you cannot live in void. Land cannot be hidden in a Swiss Bank Account, its in plain view and can be easly assessed. This should be the only tax citizens should have to pay to finance Government.
Freedom First
January 21, 2009, 11:50am (report abuse)J.C. I disagree. Why should we pay rent to the king in a free society. I think property taxes are as draconinan as the income tax!
Our property should be a place of refuge in trobled times that can't be taken away regardless of circumstances.
Excise taxes are the only fair taxes because we make the choice to pay them when we purchase a good.
Bruce
January 21, 2009, 3:00pm (report abuse)OP:
Condeded: Current tax system is unfair. Existing system redistributes income. Some folks don't care if they're to be taxed twice (maybe they've spent too much time listening to Joe Biden). There are economic advantages to taxing consumption instead of production.
Still, our country has always been about equal treatment under the law (yeah, I know the rich pay more taxes) -- we can't tax Bob twice when others making the same money are taxed once.
The cynical part of me imagines a big government guy looking at the dismal (from govt POV) revenue projections and asking himself, "what can I do to increase my money and power after the boomers retire and stop paying income tax?"
OP, if you've paid *THAT* much in taxes over the years, surely you have to be just a little cynical too.

January 22, 2009, 9:46am (report abuse)Readers should take note of Bruce's posts to get an example of someone who is against the Fair Tax simply for self-serving reasons. The bias reflected in his misstatements (? intentional) is evident to anyone who has actually read and understood the bill.

January 23, 2009, 12:04pm (report abuse)J.R. and Bruce,
You ideas are flawed. You propose to perpetuate the UNFAIR system of taxation in this country which is called the income tax. You fundamentally believe that the government has the right to take your money right out of your pocket. People who believe that this system should be perpetuated are nothing more than petty thieves. Rather than putting a gun to someones head and demanding their money, you just vote to have the govnernment do it for you.
The fair tax restores the power to the people. It completely untaxes the the Poor, and the wealthy continue to pay he most taxes (in support of their life styles)
Its pretty much that simple.
Just remember for those of you constantly accusing others of only supporting this bill because we expect some gain out of it.
1. The WHOLE COUNTRY Gains
2. We often see the worst of ourselves in others
3. Most lobbying is performed to modify the income tax in "someones" favor.

January 28, 2009, 8:09am (report abuse)This is a dollar for dollar replacement of an existing tax. Who cares what the percentage is? Whatever the percentage is, they're already taking it from us. Scary bedtime stories about this percentage or that percentage are irrelevant. We're already paying it!
Let me choose when I pay tax, where I pay it and how much I pay. When it comes out of our checks invisibly, Uncle Sam feels free to raise the rate a little bit at a time because he knows that not many people will notice or object.
Let's put some sunlight on the taxes we're paying. Let Uncle Sam try to justify a pay raise when we all see it every day in the prices we're paying.
You want limited government and lower taxes? Support the fair tax!

February 7, 2009, 3:57pm (report abuse)To those of you who are against this Bill, I encourage you to go to the site www.fairtax.org or read the book, Fair Tax, which explains the overall economic sense that such a measure would impart on the health of our economy. For those of you who are frightened by the prospect of paying a 23-28% national sales tax at the consumer level, I must bring to your attention that we are already paying 45% in imbedded taxes under the current taxation system. Every item you purchase is currently being taxed at every level of production and these taxes are passed along to consumers in the end price of our products. Our current taxation system is the reason why many American manufacturers have sent their production divisions overseas and is directly responsible for the current "bleeding out" or job loss in the United States. (cont.)

February 7, 2009, 4:11pm (report abuse)For you baby boomers who appear to be scared to death by this Bill, I must comment that you grew up during a time when our current tax laws were condusive to you becoming economically successful. At our current US tax rate, your children and your grandchildren can expect to pay approximately 54 cents on every dollar they earn in imbedded taxes and income tax. This taxation rate is not sustainable and has created a class of "working poor" in the US. Please visit the site www.fairtax.org. I encourage you to seek the truth before jumping to conclusions about who this Bill will benefit by reading the book, FAIR TAX. Become better informed about the facts, and read about the scientific studies supporting the benefits that this form of taxation would provide for all of us and not just certain groups of American citizens.

February 12, 2009, 3:03pm (report abuse)I have to say I am little confused by some of the comments made here.
The current income tax structure is a horribly outmoded system. The majority of Americans (read 'middle class') end up paying a huge percentage of their income in taxes both indirect and directly. While the lower and upper income brackets pay very little, certainly not their 'fair share'.
Additionally, there are hidden taxes attached to almost everything that most people aren't even aware of, or turn a blind eye to.
And yet despite this and the provisions given in the bill some people commenting here insist that this bill will only benefit the "fatcats" and hurt the poor working Americans.
What I would like is to know what facts are the statements against this bill based on? What sections of the bill lead you to feel this way? How is the current system any better at resolving these perceived injustices?

March 3, 2009, 5:20pm (report abuse)I am near retirement (2 years). I have read and considered the fairtax bill for the last 3 years. I have read the Bush administration report on the income tax situation. Part I of the report is dead on with the problem. Parts II and III are again just so much political garbage to push another agenda. I would very much like to see the fairtax passed and 16th Amendment abolished. Will I lose on the proposition? Maybe, but by my calculations, NO. Even if I do, it is a very small price to pay for strengthening this country and getting production back from overseas. This nation will die if we are to be a nation of comsumers rather than producers!

March 28, 2009, 4:41pm (report abuse)I is good to see that a few can read and have read the book or books about the Fair Tax. Those of you with the negative comments have obviously NOT read the book.
Imagine:
Everyone walking on U.S. soil shall pay a tax (Period).
NO business tax breaks
Every item that goes ching ching at the cash register or over the internet SHALL have the 23 cent tax (ONLY NEW ITEMS) anything used SHALL not have a tax.
We will all get 100% of our pay then buy what we want.
How can the rich get away without paying tax. THEY CAN'T. This will be as National as Women's right to vote in 1920!
I'd suggest you that have not read the material, and attended some seminars on the FAIR TAX do so, and you shall change your tune when you get educated.
Just imagine buying a used car with no SALES TAX! And receiving your full pay check!

April 26, 2009, 4:50pm (report abuse)This bill in no way repeals the 16th Amendment. If this passes I guarantee we'll end up with both.
Just repeal the 16th Amendment and do it old school for Christ's sake!

May 16, 2009, 4:15am (report abuse)Bruce, to answer your question about whether or not you are being double taxed because you have paid income taxes alraedy, you are not. The fact is that your social security payment will be taxed. If you have paid into a tax deferred 401K your whole life you are about to start paying taxes on that money. If the $200,000 that you talked about is in a savings account than you are taxed on the interest after having paid taxes already on the income before saving it. The Fair Tax eliminates taxes on interest, taxes on all income and only taxes consumption. Freedom First, Overtaxed Pennsylvanian and Montana Citizen, and all others trying to educate people, I say bravo to you all! No so called "elite" people stand to gain from this proposal. All Americans, most especially our children and grandchildren, stand to gain a prosperous and bright future from this act. Write your representative in Congress and tell them you support this act!
