I like the idea. Since "budget deficit" is a potentially misleading term, I'd prefer it if automatic payraise fails if the federal debt increases. That is, they shouldn't be saved because social security took in more money.

I agree. Social security should not be used as a failsafe to pad their own checks.

Seems like a great idea to me, but won't it also give congress and incentive to raise taxes?

NOTHING should be automatic. why not have their increases match those they allow for social security recipients???? Seems strange that they can pass laws stopping COLA increases in social security and still give THEMSELVES an increase. This has nothing to do with surpluses or deficits. It has everything to do with fair and equitable treatment.

I agree with James L. The elderly try to survive without an increase in Social Security, even though food prices continue to rise, and yet Congress has the unmitigated gall to give themselves a pay increase? The rest of the country is tightening its belt, but I see not belt-tightening in the Beltway!! It infuriates me that we have made ourselves slaves to a debt to countries who hate us, and I see no efforts to repay that debt. I'd like to see Congress live on beans and rice for awhile.

If the cost of living has not gone up to allow a cola increase for social security recipients, how has it gone up for congress? A small percent increase is a much higher dollar amount on a large income than a small income. Congress should be well paid, but if they are in it for the money they are in for the wrong reason.
