To Let Surviving Spouses Stay

On Sunday, 60 Minutes replayed a story about immigrants who have married American citizens, but whose spouses have died before the interview to prove their marriage to the Department of Homeland Security. In some cases, mothers of citizen children are...

This would give them a chance to be seen for who they are and not just for their status. It doesn't just deal with illegals.

WITH PROOF OF REHABILITATION I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO BE BETTER INDIVIDUALS IN OUR SOCIETY. I AM A SINGLE MOM AND ITS VERY HARD ON ME,THERE ARE TO MANY BROKEN HOME IN THE USA.LETS GIVE LEGAL IMMIGRANTS A FAIR CHANCE THOSE WHO HAVE LIVED HERE MOST OF THEIR LIVE SAND HAVE FAMILIES,WHY NOT? BECASUE I AM A CITIZEN IS IT OK FOR ME TO DO THE SAME OR SILAR ACT AND BE GIVEN MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO CORRECT THEM NO BUT I STILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TOO.SO HAVING SAID THIS LETS GIVE THEM AT LEAST ONE CHANCE LETS START WITH THOSE WITH JUST ONE. THEY PAY TAXES TO AND THESE POOR CHILDREN ARE YEARNING FOR THEIR PARENTS GOD FORBID AMERICA WE ARE A BETTER NATION AND WE STAND BY FAMILIES.ONCE THEY HAVEN'T COMMITED VIOLENT CRIMES LETS WORK WITH THEM PASSING IT ON DOESN'T RESOLVE IT EITHER..

So if I understand the bill correctly, it gives a judge "discretionary authority" to make the right decision on an individual basis. It is not a free pass to all aliens just because they have a child born in the U.S. What is so bad about that? It does not provide loopholes for abuse unless the "discretionary authority" of the judge has been influenced by misinformation. I think part of the problem with us as Americans is that we have a fear that aliens will move in and suck up all of our taxpayer dollars so we judge all aliens as the same. Again- "discretionary authority" is vital to solve the overall problem as long as it is implemented correctly. I would be happy to see families receive help but only if they become productive members of society. If they are linked to crime- petty or organized, they deserve nothing but a one way ticket out of the country. Let them get into the country legally and "get in the back of the line" behind the hard working aliens trying to do it right.

Not deported and then what? The bill doesn't say if a parent can adjust status they can just "exist" which they pretty much can do already unless they run afoul of the law. It doesn't address getting work authorizaion or anything without which they probably got in trouble and deportation proceedings

another back door to amnesty.... if two Mexicans (or whoever)have a child while in the USA...that child should be a Mexican, traveling in the USA... why are they (the entire family) now on the public rolls for housing, food, education etc etc. If the child had to option of becoming an American on their 18 birthday ... that ok.... Right now in Tarrant Co in Texas... 72 out of 100 children born are to illeagals... and were all footing the bill... they (illegals) are driving down wages, a drain on our services ex education, healthcare, housing etc
Its got to stop....

This is BS! So all an illegal alien has to do is sneak into our country, drop a kid and they get to stay because their kid is now an American citizen? I say deport the parents and if the kid is under 18 he or she must go with them! Let's not make it any easier for Mexico to invade the US ok? It's easy enough already since our so called Border Patrol agents are under cease-fire orders!

Adds incentitive to have children whether they are able to provide the right enviornment or not, whether they have wed or can afford a child.
There is one hospital that markets to come into the US and have a citizen child to Mexico.

Legal status should be based on more then having a child born in the US.
How many other nations are foolish enough to handle it that way, children should not be used as a path to citizenship or legality.

Ok. Heres the issue. There were a few women whos American fiances died in iraq or Afghanistan. Now even tho they have a child and applied for citizenship months before hubby died they are in the process of being deported, w/o their kid.

In these situations they relaly need to stay. If their partner died serving this country the last thing we need to do is now make his son/daugther parentless.

As for illegals. My wife and i think just ebcause you have a kid here with 2 illegal parents shouldn't count as a American citizen.

My mom was an immigrant. She came here legally and waited in line like you are supposed to. Even she feels a lil shorted because of the hardships she had to deal with to become a citizen. Giving people who come here illegally a free pas while making the people who lawfully come here wait and suffer is soooo wrong.

Many of these people are hard working and honest, but the law is that if they are illegal they should be sent home with their children and no judge should be allowed to "change that law". We also need a reasonable guest worker program but offspring should not be allowed to be a citizen.

No child born in the U.S. to illegal parents should get a free ticket to citizenship. CHANGE THE LAW!

People are misinformed, both parents are not always illegal immigrants. I am a u.s. citizen, married an illegal, had three children, he committed a crime, paid his fines, did his time, yet was still deported leaving me to raise our three children by myself. They should have given him family status which would have enabled him to work to support the 3 children he and I made. My children were deprived of having their father around. After 23 years, I still love their father and we want to be together, but the right way. Please change the law so that he and others in the same situation can come home. Even our own president admitted to doing cocaine in college, the difference was he wasn't caught and he is a citizen. Stop treating illegals like animals.

Hard-working illegals aren't the ones abusing the system. Its the native born citizens Bernie Madoff, Dick Cheney, the Enron folks--who have done way more to damage our system than illegal immigrants. If we are really concerned about folks from abroad moving to the US, we should do more to help Mexico improve its schools, and roads. We should help Mexico clean up the corruption and bribery problems. Anyway, if health care in the US isn't reformed soon, we will all be pressing against our border to the North, trying to get into Canada.

Lets look at this differently. If we were legally traveling in another country and say our wife has a child while there. The child would of NOT be a citizen of that country just because they were born there. Sure we would obtain the proper papers for the childs sake once we returned home. I believe it should be the same for an alien travler here. If they are legally here it does not justify citizenship, and darn sure does not if they are illeagally here, if they are granted amnisty and free citizenship.
