I believe if the congress is serious about resolving our economic struggles in our country they too should also take a cut in salary like so many others are willing and now forced to do. The politicians are public servants and need to realize that being one does not entitle them to become rich nor receive automatic salary increases. If we are requiring the public to conserve and save our businesses and work harder and longer, than they too need to refuse an salary increase and even consider a 10% cut also. Their retirement is secure and I sincerely believe they are not worried if they can afford food, shelter and health care at retirement. I believe it is time for them to act with integrity and walk the talk. Now would be the perfect time to show the country they are serious.

With such miserable performance, they deserve a demotion in thier pay, but if the best we can do it stop their raises I say it's more than justified. Even if they were performing well the near $170k they make is more than enough for the next several years.

Do the members of congress really need a raise while the economy is tanking? I think not.

Status: Referred to the Committee on House Administration, and in addition to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

This thing can sit in the committees forever - it needs to be brought out and voted on ASAP. Our economy is suffering.

Of course this bill would have almost no effect on our current problems. It could be a good distraction though. Anything that uses their time for something other than flushing another $1 Trillion dollars down the toilet to "create jobs" is a good thing.

I say make them all work for one dollar a year like they have essentially forced the auto executives to do. Most of them are already are millionaires anyway. Whatever happened to doing public service for the good of the Country? The only thing that they all seem to think about is getting re-elected anyway. They get enough free perks anyway as it is. How about we get the same kind of health care coverage that they get?

Absolutely no pay raises for congressional members for the next ten years! Their unethical performance and decision making has been what got us into this economic mess in the first place (i.e. deregulation in the stock market, and "a home for every American" whether they can financially qualify for it or not.)I believe that the American people should be allowed a popular vote regarding the pay levels and raises for all elected officials. They should be required to be on the same retirement package benefits as the rest of us who are now receiving (or hopefully will see),benefits from Social Security. That way they will truely appreciate the way most of us are trying to make ends meet. Also, their health care should fall under the same perameters as the rest of the American public. Do not try to tell us that their pay and benefits are such to insure the security of confidential or highly classified US information. Remember...traditionally our laws provide for the execution of traders.

OOOOppps! My bad... that was "traitors" not "traders". Although given the current state of our economy they might be one and the same.

I see and here of people being laid off, and benefits cut and pay cuts for the ones lucky enough to still have a job with which to pay taxes with. Why does our Congress need a pa raise? It's nothing short of a slap in the face of the citizens who put them there to watch out for our interests in the first place. Every one of you in this group and groups like this need to send lists of our current congress out to all of your friends and encourage them to send them on to their friends. Their is power in numbers fellow citizens. P.S. Don't forget our 2nd. amendment rights that are going away little by little.

Did you know that since 1989 congress has given themselves a raise simply by not turning voting against it? These guy that are nit-picking about how building a school does not make jobs. Buying computers does not create demand for .......wait for it........ computers. That have to manufactured buy ......... wait for it .......... someone with a job.
Ask your representatives how they can accept a raise and ask auto workers to take a cut?
This bill does not go far enough though it need to be permanent make them ask for a raise like everyone else

No money to build roads & bridges, schools, or provide decent health care for Americans. Can't provide money to keep jobs that pay Americans decent wages in this country. Asked Detroit auto workers to take a wage cut but they sure can give themselves a raise. They don't know the meaning of the word shame! It is time for the rest of America to wake up and clean house and get rid of the "Its all about me bunch!"

Do any of us really believe that congress is going to vote for this bill? And why limit it to years when there is a deficit... oh, right the government is always in the hole.

Who was the dumb congressman who wrote the bill to ask for a pay raise? Was he out of his mind, or just hoping he wouldn't be re-elected?

Now is the time to vote ALL Republicans and Democrats out of office that support any pay raise. They are destroying our country and should not be rewarded!

If people on Social Security do not get a raise come the 1st of January 2010 and still the cost of medical insurane part A & part B are going to go up; why in God's name do the idiots supposedly administering to our rights need a pay increase of any kind. Eveyone in America has been made to suffer in one way or another because they can't stop the lunacy they have started. We can NOT buy our way out of this problem , as Obama is trying to do. Many people on Social Security only have that monthly check to live on-- Congress should try to get by on 1153 per month.

If the bozo's in Washington think the American people will stand for any pay raise they may vote themselves, they have another thing coming. We are soooooo sick of this administration. Greedy bunch of bastards.

I want to go one step further and say that congress cannot get ANY increase in pay. People are losing their jobs, homes and families due to the stupidity of Congress. They should be taking a pay cut! Where else can you get an automatic raise in pay (as well as good health benefits and all the other perks) and do such a horrendous job!!!

I foresee that the face of Congress will change after the elections. I can't believe voters will allow these jokers to remain in office after their performance and why on earth they should get a pay raise every year is beyond me.

Let's band together and force them to pass a bill on term limits - no more than 2 terms!!!!! Congress gets way too many perks that they don't deserve, much less earn!FMOFO

Many who comment know too little about each senator. Because 60 votes are needed to pass legislation certain senatorial troublemakers use that fact to toss their weight around.(See Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman.) There are many senators who are good, although too many are influenced by the people who fund their campaigns. Many who comment should redirect their anger toward the big financial institutions and the Bush administration who thought deregulation and free markets would produce a great economy. Congress must pass legislation that will prevent another disastrous economic crisis.

This is pointless let them have their pay raise, why don't we just make them pay the same taxes we all do? They are "hard-working" American's too. If our Armed Forces can pay taxes so can they!
