Another chance to correct an egregious oversight by our government. 124,000 young women pledged their lives to their country for the duration of WWII,were issued cards with serial numbers, uniforms with insignias and worked as they trained to be nurses. Their staffed the hospitals and prevented the collapse of the health care system on the homefront. Their enlistment enabled graduate nurses to fill the ranks of the dwindling supply of nurses in the Army and Navy to care for our wounded overseas.

Surely if the Alaskan Territorial Home Guard volunteers can be granted veteran services, these forgotten patriots-now in their 80s-must get veteran status NOW.

Let us "REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR", the beginning of a great LOSS of HUMANITY. May they rest in the "Peace of the Lord". Let us remember "THE UNITED STATES CADET NURSE CORPS MEMBERS", who, as teen-agers enlisted and served This Great Nation's Peoples during the Declared World War II of the Twentieth Century. THANKS!!!

Since 1996, Rep Nita Lowey has introduced legislation to give equity to WWII US Cadet Nurse Corps members with 7 resolutions being allowed to die in committee. 66 years after US Cadet Nurses first stepped forward to serve, HR1522 was again introduced to give veteran status to surviving members. A Subcommittee AT LAST held a hearing on May 21, 2009. Please don’t let HR1522 die with these honorable women who are ALL NOW between the ages of 83 and 101! Other Public Health Service officials who served in administrative positions over cadet nurses were given veteran status. And in 1977, HR5087 was passed and signed into law giving the non-military WASP (Women's Airforces Service Pilots) veteran status. These women ferried trainer planes from American production factories to domestic military airfields. FOR OVER 20 YEARS, WASP members HAVE received veteran’s benefits and honors after serving under similar conditions as the Cadet Nurses who are being denied. Ask your rep. to co-sponsor.

My mother, Doris M Gibson, was a proud member of the Cadet Nurse Corps. She trained/served in New Castle, PA, Chicago and Long Island. We have seen the picture of her in her uniform for over 60 years. It is proper and fitting that these (once) young ladies, who served with out hesitation, be granted the status they earned = as veterans.

Trained at St. John's Hospital in Lowell, MA. I have a few classmates who are still alive. My E-mail is pshaheen@aol.com.

I am grateful for the educational opportunities I received because of that service. Why not recognize the corps while a few of us are still here?

I am the daughter of a Cadet Nurse who trained at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, NY and Marcy Psychiatric Hospital in Utica, NY. She then worked at John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. It would be most appropriate for her to feel the pride of actually being considered a VETERAN who served her country.

I was a Cadet Nurse. I trained at Madison(WI) Methodist Hospital. Three Cadets from Methodist were sent to Camp Carson Colo. and were discharged from there when the war ended in 1945. I would like to stand with the veterans when invited at patriotic events.

There are 4 Cadet Nurses living in the retirement residence with me.

More and more former US Cadet Nurses and many daughters of these patriotic women of WWII ate being heard at meetings held by different organizations throughout the South Shore area of Boston MA.

In addition, I placed a blurb in the Harvard Health Study Newsletter and received letters and emails from former US Cadets in cities across America including Hawaii.

The first Republican Representative: Leonard Lance from NJ signed on as co-sponsor saying that this is a bi-partison issue; the US Cadet Nurse Corps deserves recognition soon. It's wonderful to see so many comments from different people on this site.

Does anyone know the Secretary of Defence? I believe he could declare the USCNC to be Veterans and circumvent the whole congressional process.

What is the lame duck House of Representatives to do?

Suggestion: A smart Representative would rescue HR 1522: The United States Cadet Nurse Corps Equity Act of 2009 from its usual graveyard in the House Committee on Veteran Affairs, load it with co-sponsors and bring it before the House for a unanimous "aye" vote. Then on to the Senate! Quick before it's too late for everyone- especially the surviving members of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps who are now eighty plus years old. Go down in history as having recognized, and corrected a grievous oversight. Barry Goldwater championed the WASP of WWII in their quest for Veteran status in 1977.

Who will champion the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in their quest for veteran status in 2010?

My mother was a member of the nurse cadet program and a graduate of St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. We both appreciate all of those who have tried to recognize these forgotten angels. Let's get this enlisted corp the recognition they deserve before they it becomes a posthumous recognition. Thanks!

My mother, Katherine Jane Rickes Orr enlisted, graduated and served on the home front, Class of 1947, Vassar Brothers Hospital. She was proud of her Cadet Nurse Status, and wanted to see Veteran Status. She passed away, Jan. 2009. Thanks to Thelma Robinson, the author of 3 books about the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps has provided a legacy for the 124,000 enlistees. I, too am making sure The U.S Cadet Nurse Corps does not fade. Please make this bill a priority for those survivors, and those passed to be honored.
