I hope this does not fund something like the DARE program. I worked in prevention in the elementary and middle schools for many years while the DARE programs were in use. They fed the ego of police officers, but did nothing to prevent drug use or gang activity. A pure waste of money.

"...may be used to hire former members of the Armed Forces to serve as career law enforcement officers for deployment..."

Lately it seems to me that officers I have met over the past decade (one in trying to assist in a crime incident) must have excelled in Arrogance 101, Bullying 101, ect.

When I was a child, I was told the police were to be trusted. Now, though I am a respected member of society (an RN) I would rather walk away (or run away) rather than enter into any encounter with a police officer.

Look at the trend in uniforms: Militaristic, "put everyone into submission" comes to mind. As the person above said: it's all ego.

This bill appears to do nothing to help make officers more effective, it just puts more power-hungry egotistical sorts into positions of power.

How about funding to teach officers how to regain the respect that so many areas have totally lost for the police? Or which teaches how diplomacy and courtesy can help connect communities?
