An "anabolic steroid" is defined as "any of a group of usually synthetic hormones that are derivatives of testosterone, are used medically especially to promote tissue growth, and are sometimes abused by athletes to increase the size and strength of their muscles and improve endurance."
DHEA does not fit into this category. Anabolic steroid drug abuse is purported to result in cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and blood clotting, liver conditions such as jaundice and hepatic carcinoma, tendon damage, reduced fertility and breast enlargement (in males), and adverse psychological and behavioral effects. DHEA does not exert such effects.
Therefore, the notion that DHEA is in any way comparable to controlled anabolic steroid drugs is scientifically unfounded and legally invalid.

Natural bio-identical hormones give a wonderful benefit to our health. DHEA is not in the catagory of synthetic hormones which are NOT natural for the body, and because they pass through the liver, cause serious problems. Keep bio-identical hormones available, the drug companies are just trying to get rid of any competition.

DHEA demostartes very good results in the treatment of depression and schziophrenia. I am afraid that because it is a sex hormone that the some states who used to castrate the mentally ill will not tolerate DHEA. As a supplement DHEA works so well in the treatment of mental illness that it maybe the pharmaceutical industry trying to stop this supplement. The drug industry is sending a message that hormones do not affect mental health.

I take 50mg of DHEA or 25mg of 7-Keto DHEA about once a week. This supplement does not have animmmediate effect or instant action like a pharmaceutical drug, it usually takes 24 to 72 hours for DHEA to have an effect. DHEA is sort of consciousness modulator, it improves ones outlook of the world around them. It does not take the place of medications, but the use of DHEA may allow physicians to lower dosages of medication as the body tends to respond to therapy. The American public are not immature, this supplement should not be outlawed by scientists because it affects sex hormones. Science should study why this supplement can slowly improve ones health consciousness and sense of well being. This is not a pill in the traditional sense as poeple know pills, but it can be helpful in generating an overall feeling of good mental health. Why are scientists afraid of evaluating the effect sex hormones have on the bodies health?

There are a number of amino acids I take, along with DHEA, which have a subtle but very real effect on my quality of life. I had a spinal cord injury 30 years ago and although I have recovered substantially, it certainly isn't near 100%. There still are relatively few treatments that can alleviate my symptoms. So when idiots in Congress and the Senate take upon themselves to create a problem where none existed, and in the process severely affect other humans to the negative, I just have to wonder how they sleep at night.

I think more study is necessary. There may be some temporary healing power in DHEA. I am not advocating daily use nor do I think it should be illegal.
